How to Get There
Travelled from Colorado back to Texas and stayed overnight. Got in late. Valet was inexpensive and so clutch. Room was super clean and really enjoyed the breakfast in bed. Will stay again for sure. Wish y’all had a hotel in Amarillo too.
I personally called to make the reservation for 6 nights, about 3-4 days before arrival; just to find upon check-in that there was apparently a mayor water service scheduled for the 2nd morning, at 9am! This is ridiculuos, it should have been performed at night when it affects less guests, or way later like mid of day, AND I should have been told when doing the reservation... On top of it all, ZERO empathy from the hotel staff... you dont want to be on holidays with your whole family and be told water is cutoff for the whole day starting at 9am!
After all this, I was given an ultra hard time (with rudness) when trying to get a slightly later check-out... REALLY?!
Their showers are in urgent need of update, they still have shower curtains which is good for a 2 star hotel, and the shower pan is stained/filthfy... horrendous! Ah, and they should really install a wter softner for good sake!
To top it all of, after 3 requests of having my statement printed while checking-out, the best the lady at the front desk could do was read out the charges! Jeez...
Its sad, because they do have a nice property, with some remodelling of baths and good management, it could be a great hotel, but...
Confirmed: never use non-professionaly managed hotel-chain properties...
We traveled to Lubbock this past weekend to tour Texas Tech, and booked a room at the Overton. As this was our only "trip" during spring break this year, we booked the concierge level so our kids would feel like they were still getting a little razzle-dazzle out of the holiday.
When we arrived, we learned that our room was not quite ready. The gentleman at the front desk very graciously offered us cocktail vouchers and said he would find us in the bar when our suite became available. We had some time to tour the public space of the hotel, and I have to say that it is appealing, updated, and a bit whimsical. I learned during our visit that Lubbock has been developing itself a reputation as an artistic space, and the Overton seems to have embraced that in a charming way.
The bar area and dining room were lovely. We enjoyed our drinks the evening we arrived, and had a delightful buffet breakfast the next morning. I would not normally highlight an item on the buffet in a review, but the bacon in the breakfast buffet was spectacular. That had to have been the thickest cut bacon I have ever seen in my life. I would almost call it bacon steak. Everything on the buffet was good, and the omelet was very well prepared. The wait staff in the restaurant and at the bar were all nice and accommodating.
Our room was also very attractive. We were given a suite on the 14th floor next to the lounge, which featured a great view of the campus and football field. We did not spend a lot of time in the room, except to sleep. This is the only thing I did not like about the property - the sheets and pillows in our room were not what I would have expected from a hotel of this caliber. The sheets were rough, and the pillows felt like they were filled with socks. Had we been planning to stay more than one night, I really would have asked housekeeping to change out the sheets and bring us new pillows. As it was, none of us slept very well. I would normally say that the hotel was due a soft good renovation, but all the other soft goods were wonderful. The towels were remarkably large and fluffy. I hope our experience with the sheets and pillows was just an aberration.
We very much enjoyed the lounge. It did not seem like there were very many people in the hotel last weekend, so we almost had the lounge to ourselves. My husband enjoyed sitting in there to get work done while we toured the school. The attendant was very accommodating and friendly.
We were very glad to stay at the Overton. It clearly is the premier destination in the area, and I would definitely stay there again if we find ourselves in Lubbock.
I stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Texas Tech and the Buddy Holly Museum. The rooms are very nice, surprisingly quiet considering how generally busy the hotel is. Everything works, and room was spacious and moderately tasteful. Oddly, I was put in a handicap room, for no obvious reason. Not a problem, except possibly that's why I didn't have a bathtub and had a very large, odd shower. My only complaint is that the elevators are VERY slow. There are only 3, all are slow, and on the 9th floor I often had to wait so long I considered walking down.
Stopped one night while on a trip out to the West Coast. Came in late but they make you feel like you should've been there earlier! Rooms are always clean and well kept and reasonable being it's not football season! Out of my 60 plus years, I can't think of another hotel we've stayed at more or more importantly, pretty much sets the bar for what we like. We'll always stay there when in Lubbock.
