Beautiful oasis in the midst of the city, and great for getting pampered!

My husband and I wanted a romantic getaway, but didn't want to drive far. We live north of Houston, and decided on the Houstonian with all it's amenities, yet relative close proximity. My husband was a DJ in his former life and had worked several events there many years ago, but it was my first visit and his first overnight stay. We arrived early afternoon for a couples massage at the spa. Trellis the Spa facility is beautiful and packed with amenities! You could easily spend the whole day there! We were cheerfully greeted and shown to the locker rooms to change into scrumptious robes and slippers. The waiting lounge has complimentary water, iced and hot tea, fruit and yummy shortbread cookies. You can also order food and drinks from the restaurant to enjoy at the spa. Our massages were wonderful, and Lupe, my therapist was great at finding my tight spots to work on. Afterward, we decided to order a meal, but I recommend ordering before your service because it takes about 30-45 minutes to prepare and deliver to Trellis. I had the beet crudite and a glass of rose and my husband had the fruit and cheese plate and a peach bellini. Both excellent, but the crudite was very refreshing and perfect on a hot summer day! It was early evening by the time we finished eating and since we made dinner reservations at Tribute, the hotel restaurant, we decided to get changed, check into our room and relax a bit before dinner. We didn't take time to enjoy the float pool or hot tubs, but that is on the list for next time! The locker rooms are fully equipped with all the necessary toiletries one needs. The shower rooms have everything from complimentary razors to mouth wash to freshen up and feel your best! We left completely rejuvenated. We checked in to our room on the concierge floor, which was one of the last rooms on the floor. My request for a room away from the elevator and ice machines was granted! On the way to our room was a corridor with floor to ceiling windows and beautiful greenery outside! Our room also had a floor to ceiling window with similar, beautiful view. It felt like we were in an air-conditioned tree house in the jungle! No signs of urban life anywhere, it was truly an escape. The room was cozy and bed comfy. There was a fully stocked mini bar/fridge (although no room for anything else) and a Keurig coffee maker, but we didn't use either. The bathroom is fully stocked with toiletries, including a cute, little sewing kit! I hadn't seen those in hotels in years! After getting settled, we had about an hour to enjoy the complimentary snacks and beverages in the concierge lounge, which was spacious, yet comfy. There was a nice selection of wines, beers, spirits and mixers, some finger sandwiches and veggie crudite. Next, it was time for dinner at Trellis! This was a nice place, pretty quiet during the week (we were there on a Tuesday night) and we were seated next to the window overlooking more pretty greenery. The food and service were top notch! I enjoyed the greens salad to start and the vegetarian hominy and black bean fricassee, and husband started with the tortilla soup and enjoyed the duck and dirty rice. To drink, I tried a crisp and fruity Hungarian white wine, which was quite good, and husband ordered the pear julep, which was also very nice and perfect summer evening libation. We were too full for dessert, but later went back to the lounge, which is open until 10:00 for after dinner drinks and a couple of light sweets. They offered a nice selection of cordials, wine and coffee with a nice spread of sweets. The sweets included a mini chocolate pudding, a spice cake and various cookies, among other things, in small-bite servings, which was perfect if you don't want a large dessert. We visited with a nice English gentlemen traveling on business from London. After retiring to bed, we slept great, although the thermostat light was pretty bright and I wasn't sure if there was a way to dim it. We did not have time to enjoy the health club, and it had been too rainy to check out any of the swimming pools, but next time, we will stay a little longer and take full advantage. Overall, our stay was very relaxing, we were well cared for and could have any need or desire met. It was perfect for what we were looking for. I have no complaints, but would suggest updating some of the decor, especially in the concierge lounge. It feels like a cozy lodge in the autumn, albiet a little dated.

Expected More from the facilities

For a girl's weekend, we decided to go to the Houstonian spa, located in a lovely area in Houston. Maybe my friend did too good of a job pitching how great the spa was since she had been before but personally, I didn't get any sense of luxury at all from the spa. There were way too many customers for the size of the public areas. Every chair in the relaxation room taken, the hot tub full and the indoor pool is way too small. It would be nice if they had an outdoor pool as well. The lunch was mediocre although the cheesecake was delicious! And my treatment was also very good.

Sorry?!?

We wanted to love this place, and aside from the issues we had with the room, we did. The food and the pools were great, but the room and the hospitality were extremely lacking, which is sad considering those are two major components to running a hotel. Upon check in on Friday evening we discovered that our fridge (mini bar) wasn’t working, so we called down and they said they would send somebody up to check it out. We waited about an hour before having to put the “do not disturb” light on due to my toddler needing to go to bed....had to put his milk in an ice bucket instead of the fridge. The next morning we asked again and they sent out a replacement fridge, instead of actually checking out the problem. It was still warm but we figured it just needed time to cool down so we went to the pool and enjoyed our day outside. We returned later that afternoon, once again another bust....warm fridge. Had to have been a bad circuit/plug but I’ll never know because they never sent anyone back to check it out after calling again. That mini bar was pretty much useless to us all weekend. Shame. Issue two was smaller issue but still a hazard nonetheless. My son discovered that there was a puddle in the bathroom that went from under the sink, towards the toilet, so we couldn’t really tell which area it was coming from because there was no drip. Figured after wiping it up it would be fine, only to discover the puddle the next morning same place, which if we hadn’t had the mat on the floor could easily cause someone to slip. Before heading out we told the cleaning lady about it and she said she would report it and check it out. Each time we got back there was a new puddle. Had to keep a towel on the floor the whole time. To top it all of, when i went to check out the front desk clerk asked how my stay was. When i said, “fine, aside from the room issues”, all he said was “oh, sorry”. He didn’t ask what happened, didn’t ask if it had been resolved, nothing....just sorry. It was like a slap in the face. He apparently wasn’t having a good morning, but it’s sad that had to be put on me. Like i said, wanted to like this place, but I’ll be taking my family back to the Omni and Granduca if this place can’t get the hospitality back in order.

Nice but not Outstanding

Nice hotel is an extremely convenient location. Rooms are a good size, although dark and definitely in need of an update. I just prefer a more light and airy feel. In fact, the whole hotel has a clubby feel with dark paneling. The room did have a cool view of nothing but greenery. Staff were all very attentive and friendly. Breakfast in the Tribute restaurant was tasty. There is plenty to do with fitness and pools. Adjacent is the historic home of President Bush – kind of a cool thing! I would consider staying here again. I was nice but not outstanding.
