Hip 1970s-inspired Tempe digs with a rooftop bar, Mexican restaurant and outdoor pool
The first property from new hoteliers, Graduate Hotels, this 140-room sleep opened in October 2014 opposite Arizona State University. As such, expect a mix of prospective students, visiting parents and returning alum occupying the bright, patterned sofas and designer armchairs in the retro-style lobby and getting their morning coffee in the all-day diner, The Normal. Upstairs, all 140 rooms retain their original bones with small footprints, sliding doors out to private balconies and petite en-suite bathrooms with standalone showers, but have been updated with designer quirks and all the mod cons. Think clashing patterned carpets, plaid curtains and Americana accents, plus HDTVs, free WiFi, fridges and coffeemakers. Between college visits and shopping excursions to nearby Mill Avenue, the hotel offers downtime at its outdoor pool, in the 24/7 fitness center, at the rooftop bar, or in the must-try Mexican street food restaurant, Tapacupbo.
In the Area
Across the street from Arizona State University, the hotel is also a short walk to all the shops along Mill Avenue and the ASU Gammage Theater. Get in the college town spirit with tickets to a game at Cubs Park, ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium, Scottsdale Stadium or Hohokam Stadium, or shop for ASU gear at Cactus Sports. On the dining front, try one of the best burgers in town at The Chuckbox, sushi specialties at Yasu and fresh pizza at La Bocca Urban Pizzeria. For a quick drink, the Handlebar Tempe is a bike-themed beer garden with a popular happy hour.
