Cozy country club meets rustic wilderness inn at this laid-back resort near the Temecula wine country
Tucked between plush fairways and pine woods, the Temecula Creek Inn blends country-club chic with the rustic touches of a national park lodge. Set beneath a sloping A-frame roof, the inn mixes contemporary decor with muted earth tones (think sandy browns and burnt oranges). Abstract art adorns some walls and side tables, and the furnishings offer an ever so slight nod to the Southwest. But the real eye candy is out back, where the vista encompasses the golf course, woods and surrounding mountains.
Bed and Bath
All guestrooms are roomy, clean and comfortable. A work desk and flat-screen TV are welcome mod cons for times when you're not teeing off or winery-hopping and bathrooms come outfitted with Cali Cosmetics' Tarocco amenities. But the Inn's best feature is outside: guestrooms are equipped with balconies that offer sweeping golf course views or patios that open onto lawns fit for sunning or snoozing in the shade.
Set inside the golf course clubhouse, the Temet Grill offers some of Temecula’s best dining. The menu is peppered with such classics as prime rib, filet mignon and a fresh catch of the day, but it also includes fresh Californian dishes such as jidori chicken with artichokes, roasted tomato bisque and flatbread pizza. The wine cellar carries the best local vintages, but the martinis and craft beers can stand on their own too. Other than golf, recreational diversions include an outdoor swimming pool and a small but functional workout room.
In the Area
TCI is well situated to take advantage of the valley’s top attractions. The rapidly growing (and increasingly popular) Temecula wine country lies on the town’s northeast side, with most of the wineries along Rancho California Road. Among the best are the hilltop Miramonte, sprawling Wilson Creek and eclectic Falkner, known for its edgy architecture and leafy gardens. And if you're in search of Lady Luck, Pechanga Casino is just four minutes south of the inn, offering 200,000 square feet of gambling and headliner concerts. While you're there, be sure to make the 10-minute drive down to Old Town Temecula; once a stop on the overland stage coach route, it now houses restaurants, boutiques and artisanal craft shops in many of its Wild West buildings.
