Overview

The Review

Tortola’s enchanting Sugar Mill Hotel is all about tranquil tropical days, casual candlelit evenings and the island’s finest restaurant just a few paces from your bed. It reminds me of a casual, tropical version of a French country inn, where daytimes are spent at rest and home-cooked evening meals are the (wine-filled) main event.

Their years in hospitality and the tranquil beachside location meant that the Sugar Mill quickly became, and remains, one of the most couple-friendly spots on Tortola.

Deluxe Studios are kitted out with kitchenettes, balconies with ocean or garden views and distinctive tropical decor that echoes the vibrant Caribbean colors outside. Creature comforts extend to AC and WiFi, but to maintain the inn’s prized tranquility, there are no TVs in these rooms.

Evenings at the Sugar Mill traditionally begin with sundown cocktails in three trellised gazebos at the entrance to the restaurant — postcard-worthy spots from which to watch the sunset. The Morgans serve a different menu every night, and there’s always a sense of eager anticipation among the guests. Among my favorite dishes were West Indian Regimental beef stew, almond-crusted lamb loin and snapper with red pepper relish.

The restaurant is open only for dinner, so breakfast is served on the adjoining terrace, with local specialties like mango mimosas and pecan pancakes with rum maple syrup. For lunch, settle into one of the chairs at the Island, the inn’s surfside pavilion on a beach shaded by sea grape trees. Do not leave without trying the local specialty, “stamp and go” (salt fish fritters). Free snorkeling equipment is available for exploring the natural reef just off the beach, or you can head to one of the neighboring islands for a wider choice of water sports.

I love this place! Beautiful for a wedding.

Tortola is recovering and The Sugar Mill has done an exceptional job recovering in the aftermath of IRMAria. We stayed there Tuesday to Monday. The food was delicious the room was amazing. Sharon (the manager) is the best! The owner Dennis was on site the whole time. Pool, Beach, Rooms, Restaurant, Beach Bar... all of it was great! I love taking a nap in one of the "apples" on the beach. (best place to get rid of a hangover) We were there for a wedding and the hotel accommodated most of the guests and it was lovely to be near all of our friends. You can walk down the road to apple bay for surfing (which my husband loved)

Recently stayed at the Sugar Mill for a wedding. They have done a terrific job recovering from the hurricanes. The food is great, the rooms very comfortable and the staff is the best!! They will help you with anything. Great beach bar and the Painkillers are the best on the island. Owners are always on-site and are very friendly.

Our Anniversary in the BVI
Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We just returned a few days ago from a wonderful vacation at the Sugar Mill. We can’t say enough great things about the owners Dennis and Mary, and all their staff. Nothing was too much trouble, right down to bringing us an umbrella to our room in the rain. Speaking of our room, it was so charming with lovely arches, a large balcony with an uninterrupted view of the sea, and furnishings which were tasteful Caribbean. The cuisine was delicious, highlighted by the 4 pound lobsters, incredible! Although there may be a few things to do to polish up the resort after Irma, we very much enjoyed our time at this stunning resort. The ambience of the resort includes meeting and finding much in common with the other guests as we sipped cocktails and swapped stories. If you are looking for a small intimate resort with great service, delicious food, clean rooms and beautiful scenery we would highly recommend the Sugar Mill!

Anniversary Celebration

We just returned from Celebrating our 5th Anniversary at the Sugar Mill and all we can say is Wonderful! Our room was lovely and exceptionally clean. The food was fantastic. The staff and owners, Dennis and Mary, were so friendly and went out of their way for us. We did the all inclusive package and we highly recommend it. Dennis took us on the guided island tour which was probably very different than past tours. The devastation on Tortola after Irma and Maria is quite evident, but these people are resilient and re-building fast.
Our catamaran tour was so much fun we visited Cooper and Peter Island. I can go on and on about how much fun we had. But, the best thing about the Sugar Mill are the people you will meet and become friends with. My husband and I have new friends in Canada, Tennessee and of course at the Sugar Mill. So, sorry Dennis, 😜we plan to come back real soon!!!! Xoxo Joanne and Steve

First Time Back Since Irma
Reviewed 1 month ago

This was our first trip back to the Sugar Mill & the BVI since the terrible storms Irma & Maria hit in 2017. I was pleased to find the hotel and grounds in good order, some wear & tear, but nothing like I was expecting. The owners & the staff have done an incredible job of getting the Sugar Mill back in business! The rooms were incredibly clean and fresh and the food was better than ever.
