The Review

Tortola’s enchanting Sugar Mill Hotel is all about tranquil tropical days, casual candlelit evenings and the island’s finest restaurant just a few paces from your bed. It reminds me of a casual, tropical version of a French country inn, where daytimes are spent at rest and home-cooked evening meals are the (wine-filled) main event.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/10423/pgal-60515-1302202193-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Rooms on the hillside have grandstand views across the turquoise channel to Jost Van Dyke.”}The emphasis on fine dining comes from the Sugar Mill’s owners, Jeff and Jinx Morgan, who were experienced food and travel writers when they opened the hotel. Their years in hospitality and the tranquil beachside location meant that the Sugar Mill quickly became, and remains, one of the most couple-friendly spots on Tortola.

Deluxe Studios are kitted out with kitchenettes, balconies with ocean or garden views and distinctive tropical decor that echoes the vibrant Caribbean colors outside. Creature comforts extend to AC and WiFi, but to maintain the inn’s prized tranquility, there are no TVs in these rooms.

Evenings at the Sugar Mill traditionally begin with sundown cocktails in three trellised gazebos at the entrance to the restaurant — postcard-worthy spots from which to watch the sunset. The Morgans serve a different menu every night, and there’s always a sense of eager anticipation among the guests. Among my favorite dishes were West Indian Regimental beef stew, almond-crusted lamb loin and snapper with red pepper relish.

The restaurant is open only for dinner, so breakfast is served on the adjoining terrace, with local specialties like mango mimosas and pecan pancakes with rum maple syrup. For lunch, settle into one of the chairs at the Island, the inn’s surfside pavilion on a beach shaded by sea grape trees. Do not leave without trying the local specialty, “stamp and go” (salt fish fritters). Free snorkeling equipment is available for exploring the natural reef just off the beach, or you can head to one of the neighboring islands for a wider choice of water sports.

Return visit to our wedding paradise venue, post Irma
Reviewed 2 months ago

We returned to Sugar Mill for 3 all inclusive days in November 2018, after having had our wedding there in 2016 before Irma. An amazing effort and committment has been made by Dennis and Mary plus their dedicated staff to recover from the trauma of 2017. Wonderful warm welcome as though we had never been away, amazing restaurant food . and the new Tramonti beach restaurant and bar is great. We returned to the Honeymoon Cottage which we were not expecting, just as it was in 2016. Really good to see the surrounding vegetation is recovering and back to green foliage the only thing missing was the vivid bright coloured flowers and forna around the grounds but the first signs are there. You have all done an amazing job to get back to where you are and mantain the outstanding friendly attentive service. Having sailed all around the BVI's sampling restaurants and PainKillers everywhere we can honestly say there are none which match the Sugar Mill food and cocktails, they are awsome, a real treat, Thank You and well done to you all.

Dinner at the new beach restaurant - Tramonti

This restaurant is workd class! It was our second visit and every aspect was perfect. We had a table right on the water, the waves were crashing right around us! The tables were laid with crisp white linens, beautiful cutlery, crockery and glassware, exactly what you would find in a 5 star restaurant in London or New York and therefore a complete joy to find in a tiny village on a beach in Tortola.
The bar and wait staff were amazing, very polite and accommodating. The music was perfect, playlists compiled by the owner, Dennis were a mix of well known 'hits' from 60's, onwards mixed with some Caribbean favourites like Bob Marley.
We had 2 vegetarians in our group and each had a different entree that I can honestly say were the best versions of those dishes we have ever had. I particularly recommend the goat cheese ravioli! My husband had the breaded chicken and and couldn't stop saying how great it was. Thank you Chef Tony!
I recommend a visit to Tramonti, it is truly a new 'gem' in the BVI.

I love this place! Beautiful for a wedding.

Tortola is recovering and The Sugar Mill has done an exceptional job recovering in the aftermath of IRMAria. We stayed there Tuesday to Monday. The food was delicious the room was amazing. Sharon (the manager) is the best! The owner Dennis was on site the whole time. Pool, Beach, Rooms, Restaurant, Beach Bar... all of it was great! I love taking a nap in one of the "apples" on the beach. (best place to get rid of a hangover) We were there for a wedding and the hotel accommodated most of the guests and it was lovely to be near all of our friends. You can walk down the road to apple bay for surfing (which my husband loved)

Great place for a wedding!!

Recently stayed at the Sugar Mill for a wedding. They have done a terrific job recovering from the hurricanes. The food is great, the rooms very comfortable and the staff is the best!! They will help you with anything. Great beach bar and the Painkillers are the best on the island. Owners are always on-site and are very friendly.

Our Anniversary in the BVI

We just returned a few days ago from a wonderful vacation at the Sugar Mill. We can’t say enough great things about the owners Dennis and Mary, and all their staff. Nothing was too much trouble, right down to bringing us an umbrella to our room in the rain. Speaking of our room, it was so charming with lovely arches, a large balcony with an uninterrupted view of the sea, and furnishings which were tasteful Caribbean. The cuisine was delicious, highlighted by the 4 pound lobsters, incredible! Although there may be a few things to do to polish up the resort after Irma, we very much enjoyed our time at this stunning resort. The ambience of the resort includes meeting and finding much in common with the other guests as we sipped cocktails and swapped stories. If you are looking for a small intimate resort with great service, delicious food, clean rooms and beautiful scenery we would highly recommend the Sugar Mill!
