The Review

Tortola’s enchanting Sugar Mill Hotel is all about tranquil tropical days, casual candlelit evenings and the island’s finest restaurant just a few paces from your bed. It reminds me of a casual, tropical version of a French country inn, where daytimes are spent at rest and home-cooked evening meals are the (wine-filled) main event.

Their years in hospitality and the tranquil beachside location meant that the Sugar Mill quickly became, and remains, one of the most couple-friendly spots on Tortola.

Deluxe Studios are kitted out with kitchenettes, balconies with ocean or garden views and distinctive tropical decor that echoes the vibrant Caribbean colors outside. Creature comforts extend to AC and WiFi, but to maintain the inn’s prized tranquility, there are no TVs in these rooms.

Evenings at the Sugar Mill traditionally begin with sundown cocktails in three trellised gazebos at the entrance to the restaurant — postcard-worthy spots from which to watch the sunset. The Morgans serve a different menu every night, and there’s always a sense of eager anticipation among the guests. Among my favorite dishes were West Indian Regimental beef stew, almond-crusted lamb loin and snapper with red pepper relish.

The restaurant is open only for dinner, so breakfast is served on the adjoining terrace, with local specialties like mango mimosas and pecan pancakes with rum maple syrup. For lunch, settle into one of the chairs at the Island, the inn’s surfside pavilion on a beach shaded by sea grape trees. Do not leave without trying the local specialty, “stamp and go” (salt fish fritters). Free snorkeling equipment is available for exploring the natural reef just off the beach, or you can head to one of the neighboring islands for a wider choice of water sports.

We were recommended to stay, by some friends that live here in Tortola, before they opened and we kept watching the web site. As soon as they were available for bookings we booked for 7 nights. We have not been disappointed. We stayed in room 101 which has recently been finished and is everything you could want in a room. A comfortable bed and believe it or not an out door shower. No worries about steaming up the bathroom. Don’t worry nobody can see in! There is a nice balcony with an apple cocoon for relaxing in. We have spent a few hours in it I can tell you.
The service here is exceptional. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. From Cavey (I hope I got it right) who looked after our room, even on Mother’s Day, Vicky who made the most delicious cocktails, Rosella and Shekina (also known as Kina) for the great service in the fine dining restaurant, Annie for looking after us at breakfast time and Sandra at Tramonti. It felt better than being at home. Exceptional service.
Mary and Dennis were the most gracious hosts, meeting us when we arrived and looking after us every single day we were here. It felt as if we were the most important people alive. Even the wonderful birthday desert and singing Happy Birthday to us.
Thanks to everyone for making this stay special.
If anybody is looking for a place to stay in Tortola I can recommend the Sugar Mill as a wonderful experience, as I have said before . . . EXCEPTIONAL.

5 nights here...room 110 was lovely. Views. Quiet. Space.
Mary and Dennis go out of their way to make each traveller feel comfortable and special.
Secluded setting with small private beach.
Evening meals in the main restaurant are delicious...varied menu and ample wine list.
The all inclusive is a must if you do not want to rent a car or use taxis.
The hurricane damage still visible but huge efforts and investments by the owners to get it back to full glory.

The all inclusive is not cheap...and lunch can be hit and miss. For dinners stick to main restaurant.
Staff is very mixed...sometimes very slow. But this is the Carribean.

All in all a lovely few days with every need catered to. Thank you Mary and Dennis.

We have been coming to the Sugar Mill since the 90's and missed it the last couple of years because of the hurricane. We couldn't wait any longer so here we are. Tortola is working its way back after devastating damage. We can still see small results of the storm at the Sugar Mill but all is functioning very well and the food is still fantastic. Don't hesitate to make your reservation all is well and will be getting back to 100% shortly.
Still our favorite vacation spot. Wonderful food and wonderful people👍👍👍

Spectacular setting along crashing waves, small private beach, elegant dining area. Private and romantic guest rooms are nicely appointed and many have gorgeous outdoor showers. The staff and owners are lovely and friendly. BVI is open and ready for business post-Irma!

Sugar Mill has reopened after the hurricane in 2017 with new owners who have and are doing many up grades. Great food and service ocean side. Was on a MSC cruise stopping in Road Town. A business friend picked me up to have lunch at Sugar Mill. The hotel has reopened and has an outdoor restaurant on the water across the road offering great atmosphere.
