Overview

Hilltop retreat overlooking India’s Temple City, with an outdoor pool and an ayurvedic wellness center

The Lowdown

Set on 62 acres, this hilltop retreat provides an ideal base outside the rush of central Madurai, one of South India’s oldest cities. The chalet-style suites are decorated in earth tones (olive bedspreads, sand-colored walls) and have big bay windows that let in plenty of light. Upgrade to a spacious Executive Room for cool views of the city, the Meenakshi Temple towers and the Kodai hills. The on-site eatery Gad serves continental and Indian specialties: pancakes or dosas for breakfast, club sandwiches or kathi rolls for lunch. Harvey’s Lounge Bar offers imported beers, wines, aperitifs, liquors and a handful of specialty cocktails. On the grounds you’ll find an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a wellness center that offers ayurvedic treatments.

In the Area

The hotel overlooks one of Madurai’s most famous attractions, the Meenakshi Temple. The massive 12-towered Hindu tribute to Lord Siva and his wife, the goddess Meenakshi, is covered in a staggering number of carved and vividly painted statues of demons, gods and goddesses. The city itself is older than the temple, dating all the way back to the third century B.C., when Greek merchants would trade here. Take in the rich history and culture at Alagar Koll, a hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Alagar; the Gandhi Museum, which details the leader’s Freedom Struggle; or by feasting on local delicacies like appam (rice batter and coconut milk pancakes) and idiyappam, a steamed rice noodle dish typically served for breakfast.

Excellent Stay with mesmerizing nature all around
Simran05

We truly loved the place with beautiful peacocks all around, mesmerizing nature, enchanting Meenakshi temple view from our Hotel room and the most important hospitality of the courteous staff which gave us thousand reasons to applaud them.
My special thanks to the best Front Desk Manager, Viond the most humble man in his approach who made my Son's 18th birthday very special with fond memories and the beautiful lady Restaurant Manager, Shavama who was on her toe to feed us the bestest hot food at the restaurant. I was overwhelmed when she packed me few sandwiches for the airport as we had less time for lunch. And on the contrary our flight got delayed till for 6 hours while at the airport and these packed sandwiches were great survival. Thanks in million ways to all the staff in Taj for making my family stay like my own home. Shall definitely recommend.
