Bedroom Classic Elegant Lounge Suite pillow

Hilltop retreat overlooking India’s Temple City, with an outdoor pool and an ayurvedic wellness center

The Lowdown

Set on 62 acres, this hilltop retreat provides an ideal base outside the rush of central Madurai, one of South India’s oldest cities. The chalet-style suites are decorated in earth tones (olive bedspreads, sand-colored walls) and have big bay windows that let in plenty of light. Upgrade to a spacious Executive Room for cool views of the city, the Meenakshi Temple towers and the Kodai hills. The on-site eatery Gad serves continental and Indian specialties: pancakes or dosas for breakfast, club sandwiches or kathi rolls for lunch. Harvey’s Lounge Bar offers imported beers, wines, aperitifs, liquors and a handful of specialty cocktails. On the grounds you’ll find an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a wellness center that offers ayurvedic treatments.

In the Area

The hotel overlooks one of Madurai’s most famous attractions, the Meenakshi Temple. The massive 12-towered Hindu tribute to Lord Siva and his wife, the goddess Meenakshi, is covered in a staggering number of carved and vividly painted statues of demons, gods and goddesses. The city itself is older than the temple, dating all the way back to the third century B.C., when Greek merchants would trade here. Take in the rich history and culture at Alagar Koll, a hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Alagar; the Gandhi Museum, which details the leader’s Freedom Struggle; or by feasting on local delicacies like appam (rice batter and coconut milk pancakes) and idiyappam, a steamed rice noodle dish typically served for breakfast.

Delightful hotel and room, excellent service and outstanding restaurant, which provided an oasis after sight-seeing. There were friendly peacocks at the pool as an added bonus and it was a wonderful setting away from the busy city.

Old Colonial Style Bungalow with Personalized Attention
Reviewed 7 days ago

We chose this facility for its throw back to old British style bungalow. For check in they brought everything to you and there was no waiting. The staff were unparalleled in their attention to personal preferences. Mr. Arul & Suresh the Chef made special meals for my wife and the food was excellent. We ate local food. However, there is only one restaurant but they cater to a variety of tastes.

The room was large and clean with a great view of the city. The spa has a more local feel rather than what one would expect at a Taj hotel. This is certainly a place I recommend highly to those who prefer to have a local feel and a throw back to a bygone era.

The grounds are very peaceful and you are surrounded by many tame peacocks. At check in we were offered the (pottu) dot on the head and when leaving they gave us an idol which we politely refused.

All in all a great experience of India
