Set on 62 acres, this hilltop retreat provides an ideal base outside the rush of central Madurai, one of South India’s oldest cities. The chalet-style suites are decorated in earth tones (olive bedspreads, sand-colored walls) and have big bay windows that let in plenty of light. Upgrade to a spacious Executive Room for cool views of the city, the Meenakshi Temple towers and the Kodai hills. The on-site eatery Gad serves continental and Indian specialties: pancakes or dosas for breakfast, club sandwiches or kathi rolls for lunch. Harvey’s Lounge Bar offers imported beers, wines, aperitifs, liquors and a handful of specialty cocktails. On the grounds you’ll find an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a wellness center that offers ayurvedic treatments.
In the Area
The hotel overlooks one of Madurai’s most famous attractions, the Meenakshi Temple. The massive 12-towered Hindu tribute to Lord Siva and his wife, the goddess Meenakshi, is covered in a staggering number of carved and vividly painted statues of demons, gods and goddesses. The city itself is older than the temple, dating all the way back to the third century B.C., when Greek merchants would trade here. Take in the rich history and culture at Alagar Koll, a hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Alagar; the Gandhi Museum, which details the leader’s Freedom Struggle; or by feasting on local delicacies like appam (rice batter and coconut milk pancakes) and idiyappam, a steamed rice noodle dish typically served for breakfast.
How to Get There
It is a beautiful and large property on the top of a hill. It‘s a very quiet and peaceful place with a lot of old trees, peacocks all around and even a kingfisher was bathing at the pool. The rooms are located in several small buildings around the main building with the reception. Our room was spacious and clean and had a big terrasse with a phantastic view down to the city with all the temples.
We liked also very much the terrasse of the restaurant with the view of the illumnated city during dinner, the good food and service and the special guests for breakfast.
The peacocks came to the table and you could feed them by hand.
Our stay was an excellent experience.
Interesting heritage building with a great view over the city. Comfortable rooms, mostly in newer blocks, and lovely grounds, including a nice swimming pool. Restaurant not as good as it should be for a Taj hotel and poor value.
Best in hospitality, Best in Services, Best Rooms and Food and Excellent ambience is what you expect here...The down to earth service style makes you feel at home...The old fashioned rooms makes it apt for a stay...truely top knotch !!
Stayed for one night in May.
Located on a hill, airport is around 30-45 minutes from the hotel.
Amazing pleasant quiet surroundings with peacocks, great views of the city.
There is a significant need for improvement in quality of service - wrong food delivered in Room dining /45 minutes check out time/Non operational bathroom shower etc.
A very disappointing experience from the brand.
The group needs to invest in service quality & renovation to promote this hidden gem.
