Set on 62 acres, this hilltop retreat provides an ideal base outside the rush of central Madurai, one of South India’s oldest cities. The chalet-style suites are decorated in earth tones (olive bedspreads, sand-colored walls) and have big bay windows that let in plenty of light. Upgrade to a spacious Executive Room for cool views of the city, the Meenakshi Temple towers and the Kodai hills. The on-site eatery Gad serves continental and Indian specialties: pancakes or dosas for breakfast, club sandwiches or kathi rolls for lunch. Harvey’s Lounge Bar offers imported beers, wines, aperitifs, liquors and a handful of specialty cocktails. On the grounds you’ll find an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a wellness center that offers ayurvedic treatments.
In the Area
The hotel overlooks one of Madurai’s most famous attractions, the Meenakshi Temple. The massive 12-towered Hindu tribute to Lord Siva and his wife, the goddess Meenakshi, is covered in a staggering number of carved and vividly painted statues of demons, gods and goddesses. The city itself is older than the temple, dating all the way back to the third century B.C., when Greek merchants would trade here. Take in the rich history and culture at Alagar Koll, a hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Alagar; the Gandhi Museum, which details the leader’s Freedom Struggle; or by feasting on local delicacies like appam (rice batter and coconut milk pancakes) and idiyappam, a steamed rice noodle dish typically served for breakfast.
How to Get There
You can enjoy the serenity and calmness with taj hospitality, staff is very courteous and helpful, one should stay at 127 yrs old bungalow, even the villas are really beautiful and comfortable A great weekend reckon
We had a huge room overlooking the city. The grounds are lovely but the whole place feels frozen in time, around 1950. (Except for the modern bathrooms.) Be aware that if steps are hard for you, this may not be the best choice. We were asked if it was Ok if we went down "a few steps" to our room but it was way more than a few steps--not to mention that you had to go UP the steps, too. The staff is excellent as is the restaurant.
This is not my first time to this Hotel. But the experience this time was awesome from the time of entry to till checkout. I could see a big difference in every aspect of hospitality this time. Every guest is provided a special royal welcome greeted with an escort holding a royally decorated umbrella for the guest to walk under, showering with floweres and applying tilak in the forecast as the guest is guided to the lobby and check in process having the guest been seated at lobby and treated with welcome drink.Room service and house keeping is very quick and efficient. All the staff are very professional with positive approach and great service attitude.Thank you, Team Taj gateway, Madurai, for making this stay so memorable.
Great property. Away from the crowds. Large rooms. Multi - MULTI level. Tough for folks with walking diasabilities, so ask for a room with easy access. Spend time (at night) in the terrace (outside their restaurant) overlooking the city of Madurai. Try and coordinate your visit with one of the many religious festivals, so you can enjoy the "movement" in the city from the splendour of your hotel.
Lovely property, excellent service and great food. Was received by Mr.Santosh who was kind enough to allow a very early check in. Thanks to the instructions given by the executive chef Mr.Sanjay, chef Suresh prepared and served a curated regional cuisine platter which was awesome. Thank you all for making my stay memorable. Look forward to see you all soon.
