Overview

Hilltop retreat overlooking India’s Temple City, with an outdoor pool and an ayurvedic wellness center

The Lowdown

Set on 62 acres, this hilltop retreat provides an ideal base outside the rush of central Madurai, one of South India’s oldest cities. The chalet-style suites are decorated in earth tones (olive bedspreads, sand-colored walls) and have big bay windows that let in plenty of light. Upgrade to a spacious Executive Room for cool views of the city, the Meenakshi Temple towers and the Kodai hills. The on-site eatery Gad serves continental and Indian specialties: pancakes or dosas for breakfast, club sandwiches or kathi rolls for lunch. Harvey’s Lounge Bar offers imported beers, wines, aperitifs, liquors and a handful of specialty cocktails. On the grounds you’ll find an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a wellness center that offers ayurvedic treatments.

In the Area

The hotel overlooks one of Madurai’s most famous attractions, the Meenakshi Temple. The massive 12-towered Hindu tribute to Lord Siva and his wife, the goddess Meenakshi, is covered in a staggering number of carved and vividly painted statues of demons, gods and goddesses. The city itself is older than the temple, dating all the way back to the third century B.C., when Greek merchants would trade here. Take in the rich history and culture at Alagar Koll, a hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Alagar; the Gandhi Museum, which details the leader’s Freedom Struggle; or by feasting on local delicacies like appam (rice batter and coconut milk pancakes) and idiyappam, a steamed rice noodle dish typically served for breakfast.

It's very comfortable stay, very good services, hospitality is very good. Quality of room services is extraordinary good. Nice location with 63 acres of campus. Children enjoyed peacocks. Peacocks dancing is memorable.

Excellent service and excellent food. Nice place for relaxing. I would like to say about the excellent and caring service of Mr Arul and Mr Vinod. Once again thanks to all team members of Taj Madurai.

Enjoy the old world colonial style with modern amenities and impeccable hospitality!

I travel to Madurai for work and have stayed at the Taj Gateway Pasumalai twice.

Taj Gateway Madurai is most beautifully located on top of a hill overlooking the city and with a view of the Meenakshi temple.

The property is a colonial residence converted into a hotel and spread in the most serene environment. The welcome is very traditional and beautiful with flowers showered on the guest as the Indian drums play in the background, you feel like royalty . Guest are made to relax in the lounge with a refreshing welcome drink made of local herbs while the friendly and courteous staff completes the check in smoothly and quickly.

The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with huge bed, sofa set, study table and a dining table. The handwritten 'Welcome back' note (on my 2nd visit) from the GM Mr. Siddharth was very warm and connecting.

The pool and spa are beautifully located.

The food is fantastic, and the Chef accommodated special requests.

The property has lot of greenery with peacocks, squirrels and other beautiful birds all over bringing you in the womb of nature.

Special mention about a service incident - On my first visit I wanted to visit the Meenakshi temple early morning at 5 AM and could not get a cab. The front office team was very helpful and quickly organised a local transport (Auto) for me. Kudos to Team Taj that never falls short on the service standards.

An ideal place to destress, unwind and recharge amidst the customary Taj standards of making a hotel a home away from home!
