How to Get There
We stayed a total of 2 nights at Century Hotel. Comparing several hotel options, we decided to settle on Century Hotel due to the availability of hot spring bath at Chihpen area. We contacted the hotel to arrange pickup from Taitung Train Station and to Chihpen Train Station at a fee of NTD250 and NTD150 per person respectively.
We took the Puyuma express train from Taipei and arrived at the hotel around 12pm. We were told that check-in time is at 3pm and we can only wait for 3 hours before we are allowed to get the keycard. I understand that standard check in time is at 3pm but felt that hotel could have exercise some form of flexibility especially for tired travelers. We went back to the front desk at 3.30pm and this time round, we were warmly welcomed by a gentleman. His excellent service is a stark contrast to that of the previous staff we dealt with. He briefed us through the various amenities and facilities of the hotel and showed us to the lift.
As the hotel is located in Chihpen area, it is in the outskirt of Taitung city. As such, for travelers who did not drive, there is only one bus servicing the area which brings you to the city area, with an hourly frequency. The concierge is helpful by providing us with the bus timetable. There is not much to do in the area - with 2 convenience stores down the road and a very delectable Takoyaki balls stall run by an elderly Japanese couple further down the street which we enjoyed very much. It is hard to get a cab in the area.
We were assigned to a room on the 9th floor facing greenery. In my opinion, the furniture seems aged and poor in maintenance. There are stains in the cushion, curtain and also in the toilet. The hotel could have put in more effort in the upkeep for the nightly rates paid. It definitely looks better in photos than in real life.
We had complimentary daily breakfast. The breakfast is bad - while variety of food is good, taste wise there is definitely rooms for improvement. When we went down for breakfast at 9am, there is not much food left probably due to the fact that there are several tour groups in the morning.
There is a rooftop hot spring bath which is the highlight of our stay. We enjoyed the hot spring bath very much. Also, every room comes with a private hot spring tub if one is concern about privacy.
All in all, we felt that the hotel could definitely have the potential to do a lot more especially in the area of room cleanliness and breakfast service. Service wise - Mr Kao from the front desk is exceptional!
The hotel's room is gorgeous and the breakfast was excellent, I couldn't ask for more. The hotel's onsen bath on its rooftop was good but quite on the small side. Maybe because it's a Japanese-style onsen of which you are required to be fully naked, not so many people were using the onsen at the time I was there although the breakfast room was very crowded the next morning. The amenities provided at the onsen were quite weird from Japan standard too: why a big bottle of hair gel and calamide lotion but not a single bottle of facial toners nor skin lotion provided.
The hotel onsen bath is small and quiet which is good for relaxing but next time, I opt for the seemingly more lively and fun Dongtair hotel hot spring instead. It seems a lot of local people go there even on the rainy day for the outdoor bath though.
I emphasize the bed at this hotel as it was really the only bed that was not super firm/hard that I found in the 4 different hotels we stayed at in Taiwan. It felt luxurious compared to the other beds. The room was spacious enough and comfortable. It is located in the outskirts of Taitung city in the sulfur springs resort area. The hotel has an outdoor sulfur onsen bath on the roof and my hubby enjoyed the soak quite a bit. The onsen is separated by men and women and is strictly nude bathing only. There is a lovely reception area for the onsen so that those who have never indulged can be guided to its etiquette. The breakfast had a large offering of both Western and Taiwanese cuisine which we enjoyed. The only small negative (depending on your perspective) was that the hallway carpeting on the 5th floor could have used some cleaning as there were spills that were very noticeable. It took away from the otherwise beautiful ambience which even included fresh orchids.
Although the facilities here are awesome, especially the hot spring on the roof, the breakfast and dinner ruined this trip. Dishes were not complete, and the tableware also insufficient...... It’s a pity.....
On our way to Taitung, stop by Century Hotel since all other hotels were full in the area.
Bell boys and Reception staff was fantastic. Room was spacious and clean, but shampoo and lotion fixed to wall was empty..! Did not bother since we bring our own when we travel.
Spa facility was nice but for a family this is not what we wish for. Havent had dinner but had a peek in to... Did not see any value for the money, many nice small restaurants are at walking distance.
Breakfast was much in to Chinese taste, don't expect much.
A good facility, have space for improvement.
