Stunning art glass and stellar service are standouts at Tacoma's top hotel
Like the Venetian island it was named for, Hotel Murano is all about art glass, from the 104-foot sea-green piece by Costas Varotsos out front (yes, that big oval is art) to the spindly glass chandelier hanging in the lobby. Inside the blood-red elevator, the featured artists of each floor are listed, along with an invitation for all guests to treat the whole hotel as a gallery. Rooms pop with bright colors in orange blown-glass lamps and whimsical pillows. For all the delicacy of the design, there’s family-friendliness to the property, and pets get special attention from staff
Bed and Bath
Gray walls provide balance for the rainbow of colors, and sleek beds are topped with the guest’s choice from a pillow menu that includes cushy selections from Swedish designers Adam & Viktoria. Rooms are mostly square and airy, with tech that is happily up to date: The TVs are flat-screens, and iPod docks sit next to the beds. The baths are lined in gray Carrara marble from Tuscany, making the midsize spaces cool and crisp; bath products are from Aveda.
The fourth-floor Bite restaurant is best visited on Tuesday and Thursday nights, when locally born chef Matt Stickle offers drink and appetizer specials, though the menu always features the Northwest’s best wares, such as salumi from Seattle in the charcuterie and creamy Backcountry Creamery havarti on the cheese plate. Breakfast is no less ambitious, starring a giant German pancake topped with sugar and syrup. The attached Salon Miro provides hair services, while the Savi Day Spa offers facials, wraps, massages and a signature body polish and steam treatment.
