How to Get There
We stayed at the hotel Montana several times over the last 6 years, and while the service never stood out and was always very passive and inattentive, our last visit will also be our very last one. We booked a corner suite with whirlpool while we were in Luzern for a concert, and thought let's enjoy a nice spa day. They walked us to a terrible room, facing the back of the hotel where there was a building sight, with a somewhat corner lake view among other building sites. Zero privacy, and certainly far away from the pictures advertised of the room. The room next door, with much better view (at the front of the hotel) was empty. On the particular day there were gust winds, so basically the outside whirlpool (only reason for such a booking) was unusable. We could not even step outside due to the wind.
We asked to change the room due to the weather and they told us they cannot include a complimentary upgrade and need we would need to pay another 150chf to get a usable whirlpool, and they would not offer a refund. So either we lost the 500chf we already paid, or committed to the extra cash.
Anyway, 150chf later we enter a room (on our own, no one bothered to come and show us to the new room) which was not freshly prepared for us (as it was probably empty for a while): the air was unbreathable inside, 30 degrees, dust everywhere and a couch covered in human skin which went all over our clothes. The room was super dated, walls were dirty and furniture old and in need for replacement.
We didn t bother complaining again given the treatment we had in the first place and ruin more of our day, and decided to enjoy the whirlpool. Until I got inside and noticed a slight grubbiness to the thing. It looked like it had not been cleaned for a while. I ended up with a skin infection the second day, and 700chf later for a night mid week.
This experience was just a joke, the staff at reception were all apprentices and could barely even explain the amenities. It's embarrassing for a hotel which calls itself luxury level and charges the rates they do.
And of course, the weather is not something you can influence, but when you know you have returning customers you should offer an upgrade anyway, considering the rooms were empty AND there was super bad weather. We will certainly never return again, for many different reasons. Many better luxury hotels around Luzern to spend your money at.
This was our second stay.
Beautiful suite with 2 balconies overlooking Lake Luzern.
Bed was comfy with nice linens.
The restaurant is one of the finest we have experienced, so we dined there both nights.
Louis Bar is classy and swanky, they know how to mix a martini!
There is a funicular that takes you from street to lobby level that is fun to ride.
If we ever return to Luzern we will stay again.
We have stayed at the Art Deco Montana many times (at least once a year) over many years since 2007--but still look forward to it when we come. (Probably sound like a broken record--but this place is special!) It is a combination of a unique hotel in a beautiful location (high above Lake Lucerne with a view of snow capped mountains) and a talented staff that cares for guests an makes you feel at home. The Montana is really nice without being cold or ostentatious. You can find "fancier" and pricier hotels around Lake Lucerne (the Park Hotel Vitznau for example) but I would always choose this hotel over them for its warmth and charm. Also, because it sits higher than the others, the view is spectacular and there is no street noise. There is live jazz on Thursdays and weekends, excellent restaurant (Scala) and a great cocktail bar (Louis Bar).
Winter is a great time to come since Lucerne provides easy access to many local mountains and ski areas. Obviously spring and summer are magical in Lucerne as well.
We have stayed in many higher end Swiss and other European hotels--this one is among the best and probably THE BEST from a value/satisfaction standpoint. If you want real value and a consistent high quality experience, stay here--you will not be disappointed!
We came up (via the cable car -- frankly, the only way to arrive), and completely enjoyed the jazz bar. There was a smoking section (which sort of wafted into the non-smoking section), but outside of that, the bar area was classy, with tufted seating - that overlooked the lake. This was a perfect spot to catch the sunset reflected off the mountains.
There was live piano music and a delicious cocktail menu. Even on a Thursday, it got pretty busy around 6pm, but was well worth it.
My review comes a little late as I stayed here June 2-4th, 2018 but I feel it's still worth commenting. I booked online from Canada and had many questions about the amenities and room layout options. Boris (the concierge) was absolutely instrumental in making sure that I was well informed and made the right decision. I opted to book one of the penthouse suites and it was worth it!. The room was on the 5th floor, corner suite facing the the lake. There was a wrap around balcony that had a jacuzzi in the corner. The room was bright and spacious and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The champagne was flowing and the restaurant was amazing! The only complaint (which really isn't a complaint) was that I couldn't figure out the fancy TV... but then again, with a view like the one from the room why waste your time on TV.
