How to Get There
Excellent rooms, excellent service, excellent breakfast. Everything we asked for they said yes and tried their best to suit our needs in every was possible. Excellent staff at check in, valet parking and especially the concierge. We had plans to go to travel to another city after our stay with them and he changed our whole itinerary and it was awesome. Very good beds and excellent bathroom. Best shower!!!
As I had planned to stay in Bern for six nights and seven days and to visit other nearby cities in Switzerland, I looked in to five-star properties reviewed by Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times, and The Telegraph. Hotel Schweizerhof came to the top of the list in the laid-back Swiss capital.
After I made my reservation for the hotel's Charming Queen Room directly through the property, and a couple of weeks before my arrival, I enquired about an early check-in and a view of the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I received a prompt reply from a reservations trainee that the hotel could guarantee an early check-in at noon and who confirmed my room preference. I also received an immediate response to a second email on the day of my airline departure about the hotel's location -- with the concierge advising me of its proximity to the train station and offering to provide transportation, if necessary.
The hotel is conveniently located next to the Bern train station and was an easy walk from one of the train exits. On my arrival, I was greeted by two extremely courteous and pleasant front-desk employees who upgraded me to a top-floor Charming King Room with a magnificent view of the medieval town surrounding on three sides by the River Aare, plus breakfast. Shortly after settling in to my luxurious room, the concierge knocked on the door to provide a guide book on touring Switzerland by car.
On the first morning, I awoke to the spectacular site of a hot-air balloon flying over the 12th century city. Housekeeping kept the room immaculately clean. On one occasion when I didn't operate the out-of-the-room light switch properly, the hotel did not enter the room for house cleaning. However, when I returned from a full day of sightseeing, staff had posted a notice honoring my privacy and encouraging me to call for housecleaning if still desired. Shortly thereafter, two members of the housekeeping staff arrived late in the afternoon to clean the room -- truly five-star service. Perhaps my only complaint about the accommodations would be my personal preference for a more comfortable easy chair and concern about slight stuffiness encountered on my arrival, which was immediately addressed by housekeeping.
My Swiss host, a former work colleague who lives in Zurich, made a reservation for dinner at Jack's in the hotel for three, including her husband and me. As it turns out, the in-house restaurant was one of my host's favorite restaurants in all of Switzerland! We had an outstanding meal -- fresh water fish for me -- in a friendly and delightful venue.
On the following day, I met a Washington friend traveling in the country and staying in a nearby hotel. We enjoyed a nice meal and view on my hotel's rooftop. The Schweizerhof concierge was also helpful in planning our sightseeing. With the train station at our front door, we easily visited a small city, Burgdorf; Geneva; Lucerne; a mid-size city, Thun; and Zurich.
The Schweizerhof is close to Coop and Migros, two local grocery stores, which can be handy for takeout and informal eating in the room -- or in one of Bern's leafy town squares overlooking the River Aare. On the last day of my stay, I followed directions in "The New York Times Favorite Streets in 12 European Cities" to see the city from the Grosser Muristalden, including views of the 13th century clock tower and the building where Rodolphe Lindt experimented with cocoa butter and a new process that would make Bern famous for chocolate worldwide!
The 99-room Schweizerhof Bern, in situ since 1857, is known for welcoming Grace Kelly and Albert Schweitzer. The hotel's Lucerne property is famous for hosting Richard Wagner where he wrote one of the three acts for his opera, "Tristan and Isolde." For me, Hotel Schweizerhof was first rate, five-star every step of the way!
My husband and I visited this hotel as part of our honeymoon and we were both blown away!
The whole staff were wonderful and helpful and congratulated us. We were staying in Room 502 and it was beautifully decorated!
Breakfast was delicious and very reasonably priced. We didn’t eat in the connecting restaurant but did order room service one night and again delicious.
My husband and I both use the gym and wet room facilities and immediately started plotting in our heads how we could re-create it at home! Do not stay at this hotel without using it!
The sky garden was an added bonus and we managed to get up there for an afternoon of beer and hummus! Without a doubt if to return to Bern again in the future we would stay at this hotel and have already been recommending both the city and the hotel to our friends and family!
Thank you for such a glorious and memorable stay!
A true luxury five star hotel with a modern design rooms, bathrooms, lobby bar, and spa. The staffs went out of their way to make our family feel so special from the welcome amenities and fresh fruits provided in the signature suite. Their knowledgeable concierge team was able to get a hair booking at one of the top salons in Bern on a last minute booking and gave walking tips on the best vantage points to see the city, as well as, the closest playground for kids near the Bear Pitt. Our stay was perfect and we highly recommend their rooftop terrace for the best city view and drinks. Can’t wait to go back to the Schweizerhof again. We truly spoil by your team.
We had a lovely stay. The staff is very helpful and kind. The rooms are modern, clean and comfortable. They have the best bed in the world!!! The SPA is like an Oasis in the end of the day. Great location. My only complain is the breakfast price, CHF 40 per person! Come on guys, when you pay almost CHF 600 per night, you should give it complimentary!
