Renovated Vermont lodge near Stowe with a farm-to-table restaurant and full roster of outdoor adventure
Mountain contemporary. The stone, glass and exposed wood trappings of a traditional ski lodge were given some serious 21st-century polish during the renovation, so walls of stacked stone slats replace big boulders, logs are out in favor of thin boards, and floor-to-ceiling windows flood public spaces with light. Inside, flat-screen TVs are everywhere, from over the concierge desk to the open lobby bar to the guestrooms. The main restaurant has a modern open kitchen, while the great room with grand piano has been replaced by a more intimate common area with Apple computers.
Bed and Bath
Guestrooms were stripped of their dated wallpaper and textured ceilings during the revamp and reconfigured with simple off-white walls and dark wood furnishings. The statement accents are in the smaller details, including leather luggage handles, louvered shutters, modern stainless steel lamps, fabric-covered wooden headboards and the requisite Vermont cow pictures. All rooms benefit from nightly turn-down service, free WiFi, Keurig coffeemakers, plush robes and convenient electrical outlets, both bedside and at the workspace. Bathrooms are small, with standard tub/shower combos, curved curtain rods and a small marble sink area, plus June Jacobs amenities.
The standout extras at Topnotch have long been tennis and the spa. There are six outdoor courts (four hard, two Har-Tru) and four indoor hard courts for year-round play, plus renowned instruction, with more than 30 scheduled programs for all ages and abilities. The spa has a staggering 30 treatment rooms for 68 hotel rooms, as well as a raft of fitness classes, personal training and fitness equipment. More recently, Topnotch has embraced its mountainous surroundings with a lineup of guided hikes, climbing, bouldering lessons, kayaking, trail running and more. Both restaurants dish up local and regional farm-to-table fare, and Roost has a lively bar scene loved by locals, too. Topnotch also has its own equestrian center and nordic ski center.
In the Area
Topnotch has enough sporting facilities to support a self-contained resort almost anywhere, but this is Stowe, arguably the best ski mountain in the East, and Topnotch is just down the road from the base area, which also offers golf and scenic gondola rides in summertime. The town is also home to four nordic ski areas, including the nation’s first, the Trapp Family Lodge (of Sound of Music fame). But Stowe is one of the few ski towns that is actually busier in summer, thanks to a nonstop slate of festivals almost every weekend. Topnotch guests have access to the excellent and otherwise private Country Club of Vermont golf course, and the region offers every imaginable outdoor pursuit, from hiking to biking to standup paddleboarding. Topnotch also has direct access to the fantastic five-and-a-half-mile paved Stowe Recreation Path, which is used for everything from dog walking to jogging to inline skating in summer, and cross-country skiing in winter.
