Art-filled Modernist villa overlooking lofty Santa Teresa, with a built-in recording studio and swish mid-century décor
As the midpoint between Rio’s cacophonous city center and bustling beaches, Chez Georges’ precious location in Santa Teresa provides the best of both worlds—with a little extra privacy to boot. With no formal reception area, guests can discreetly access the house through a glass-paneled elevator, which promises sweeping views of the surrounding hills. Tech entrepreneur Pierre Bident Moldeva and musician Olivier Verwilghen (the couple responsible for this secluded haven) are bonafide globetrotters and you’ll find their peripatetic keepsakes scattered all over the airy Brazilian Brutalist property, from azulejo mosaics and bamboo sheets to Thai textiles to Murano opaline lamps. If you spot 50s and 70s furniture, chances are it was handpicked straight from the atelier of Ricardo Fasanello, a revered local designer. Made up of a single seven-suite villa and a separate two-bedroom studio, Chez Georges is ideal for a jet-setting rock band (did we mention the sound-proof recording studio, nestled underneath the pool?), though a family would be just as comfortable—the property sleeps fourteen—relaxing across this 10,000 square-foot tropical retreat.
In the Area
As Rio de Janeiro’s bohemian hub, Santa Teresa is an art lover and epicure’s playground. Accessible via streetcar, or bonde, its hills and green spaces lend a sense of serenity, rare in this otherwise frenetic seaside metropolis. Murals and mosaics, perfect for an impromptu art walk, bring a pop of whimsy. Street-side Afro-Brazilian drum performances and carnivals are common across its cobblestoned streets. For cachaça with a view, dine at Aprazivel, where chef-owner Ana Castilho steers the scenic thatched-roof restaurant with her two sons. Amazonian fare, like river fish stew and slow-roasted pork ribs, are the highlight of the menu at Espirito Santa, housed in a restored mansion.
How to Get There
If you are looking for an unforgettable Rio experience, this is THE place to be! Wonderful architectural piece, designed with unique and stylish items and furniture, incredible view, lovely staff, comfortable and highest quality rooms, the perfect place to stay in Rio. It is always a great pleasure to be back here in our Rio trips, and thank you again for the wonderful time we had last week! Looking forward to seeing you again!
Welcome to Paradise !
We recently spent 3 nights at Chez Georges and were not only satisfied but astonished by the beautifulness of the house and the kindness of the staff.
They tell you when you arrive that the purpose of the house is to make their guests feel like at home. This is one thing to say that but another one to make it real and this is really the case. They help you with any query you may have. I had to organise something for my girlfriend's birthday and Juliana helped me to order a birthday cake for her. Rita was also so kind and caring and made us feel very comfortable. The lady at the breakfast, even though not speaking our language, was also very kind to us.
We spent one week in Rio and Buzios and we had seen some magical stuff and lived some fabulous experiences but my top one is the relaxing time spent in the swimming pool enjoying the sun and the unreal view (even better than online) over the Sugar Loaf with the banana smoothie waiting for me ! :)
It is really a dreaming place where one can really forget his/her concerns and problems and disconnect from the "outside world".
I would recommend Chez Georges to anyone going to Rio and I would love to come back myself in a not too distant future.
Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable and peaceful!
Chez Georges Rio was probably the biggest surprise we had so far. The pictures on the website look good, but they don't even begin to describe the real feeling of this place.
Located in Santa Teresa, one of the hippest places in Rio, in the coolest, safest area of the neighborhood, surrounded by great bars and restaurants, Chez Georges is not really a hotel, it's an experience. It's the closest thing to owning a gorgeous mansion overlooking the Sugarloaf that you could have. A brutalist villa filled with authentic Brazilian design pieces, surrounded by lush vegetation and a breathtaking view.
The stay was amazing, and the people there made it that way. The place might be owned by two guys but it has some serious girl power: Letitia, who runs the show flawlessly is probably the most amazing guide to whatever you need to know about Rio; Juliana, the nicest, coolest person who helped us with finding vegetarian options for our meals and cooked amazing quiches for us and wonderful Rita, the perfect host, who made sure we had everything and helped us find the best art exhibitions in town.
The rooms are amazing, the food is to die for and the view matches them. Being in Rio for the third time, all we wanted to do was to enjoy this place as much as we could and barely left the grounds.
CHEZ GEORGES IS THE ONLY PLACE TO STAY IN RIO!!!
Chez Georges has recently opened its doors as a guest house and made possible to everyone to spend a few days or more at the villa. The house used to be the showroom of furniture designer Ricardo Fasanello; it kept it's original feel and it's current owner have - out of admiration for the designer's family - furnished it with all it's master pieces and more designers items from Europe. Greatest care for the guests and nice pool overlooking the bay up to the sugar loaf. It also hosts a sound studio so any musician would be glad to spend time recording at the villa or host a private event...
One-of-a-kind exceptional guesthouse to experience Rio. Impressive Brazilian modernist house with collection of Ricardo Fasanello design furnitures.
Such a nice atmosphere with the owners and Leticia
Highly recommended and addictive
