Belmond Hotel das Cataratas
What We Love
- The rate includes buffet breakfast
- Staying in the only hotel within Iguaçu National Park — you’ll have it to yourself for hours before the gates open to visitors (but it should be noted that it costs $52.20 for non-Brazilians to enter the park — a fee which isn't included in the daily rate)
- The pool is an unknowingly kitsch spot in the jungle
- The retro-tropical style: pink and peppermint shades under whirring ceiling fans make you feel like part of a 1950s novel
- Staff knows the best time, weather and ways to see every park sight, whether you’re a hard-core hiker or just taking the shuttle bus
What To Know
- There is an optional city and cultural fee of $2.44 per room, per day that you may pay at check-in at the hotel
- The hotel was renovated in 2010
- Everything about this place revolves around the falls; if you merely want a Brazil break with a pool, this isn’t for you
- Superior Rooms are a compact 258 square feet
- There are two dining choices: a "Gaucho" style barbecue Restaurante Ipê and Brazilian-International fusion dishes at Itaipu
- Cancellation is advised 72 hours prior to arrival
- Room bookings are limited to nine per guest
- Free WiFi

How to Get There
I declined the hotel offer for an arranged transport from the airport at 175 reais and instead took a cab which cost me only 17.50 reais. Cab was clean and safe, and a short ride to the park entrance. From there a free hotel shuttle comes every 20 min to take guests to/from hotel. So pretty easy and cheap to get there. Great hospitality - staff will always address you by name at the restaurants. Great rooms, classic decoration but very tasteful. Bed was comfortable but pillows not so much. Safe, Havaianas flip flops, bath robes available in room. No coffee in room, which was surprising. Mini bar was "free" until you start asking for replacements. As good as that sounds, there's no alcoholic bevs so don't get too excited about it! Only water and soft drinks. Free wifi in room, good speed. Beautiful bathroom, great local toiletries and towels. A la carte restaurant was excellent and service amazing. The other restaurant was buffet style, which was ok. However, everything is incredibly expensive. Breakfast was good but quality of food varied from one day to the other. Immaculate grounds and beautiful pool. Hotel was spotless, incredibly clean. Falls literally across the road from hotel's main entrance and open to guests 24/7 (open to public 9-5 only) so you can have the Falls all to yourself without the crowds. It was my second visit and I'll return again.
Good: Facade and lobby were beautiful and smelled so nice. The view of the falls outside is beautiful and you can start walking on the trail before the park officially opens to avoid the crowd. Staff are extremely nice. There are little chocolates they offer you at reception that are delicious. I asked to buy them but they aren’t for sale. The staff actually gave me a box of them which was so nice of them. At checkout they give you a small glass bottle of water from the falls for a souvenir. They also give you havaiana flip flops for the room.
Bad: I wish the impressive general area extended to the rooms. We had a superior room and the room smelled funny. We think it was from the wood and humidity keeping it moist so it smells musty. There’s a lot of wood in the room and maybe a lemon scented rub down would help? My bedding also smelled like a sweaty man- which was gross. I sprayed so much perfume and it still didn’t help. We are at both the pool and the main restaurant. Both were very expensive and the bottled water is almost USD $10 per bottle. The restaurant food was just odd. I understand they are trying to be fancy but the flavors just didn’t work. I thought the pool food was better. Breakfast was excellent- one of the biggest breakfast buffets I’ve seen.
I would stay here again and recommend to friends, but maybe upgrade to an even nice room. Also, the tower at the center of the hotel isn’t worth going up, not much of a view.
There are not enough superlatives to describe the perfection of this property. So close to the falls and having the advantage of being able to have access before the general public. The falls are stunning and so is the hotel. Staff are very attentive and the cleanliness has to be seen to believed.
Have seen Niagara and Victoria but by luck we saved the best for last.
I loved this hotel so much that even when my Internet freaked out and didn't properly submit my first review, I was still determined to write another. This is by far and away the best hotel I have ever stayed in. My friend and I would easily stay again even if the falls weren't literally right outside the front door. The staff was courteous and friendly, the accommodations were stunning, the pool was beautiful, and the free breakfast is the best one I've ever had in my life. We apparently visited in the off-season. All that meant for us was that we had the pool to ourselves some days! We didn't get to experience one of the dinner restaurant buffets while there--which I only know about because one of the hotel staff had told us it was mistakenly available that night. But it's not available when the hotel isn't as full. But that is truly the only thing that went "wrong" during our stay--not being able to eat a dinner buffet that I hadn't previously known even existed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, couples, friends, or even solo travelers. You're never going to want to leave.
Our stay at the Belmond exceeded our expectations from the moment we arrived. The cleanliness of the hotel, the daily buffing of the wooden floors, the staff, the food and the views were world class. We will be recommending this hotel to friends, family and will return
