How to Get There
I am in our 2 bedroom villa at the resort as I write this review. We traveled here with our two sons, ages 21 and 23 as part of a 12 day trip to Australia from the East Coast of the US.
Our experience has been wonderful and perfect in every way. Everyone on staff is charming, kind and helpful and at the same time respectful of our space.
Our villa is gorgeous. We have two enormous bedrooms and bathrooms, plus a half bath, a gigantic living room, our own heated pool and plenty of places to sit outside. There is a stocked mini bar complete with snacks and drinks. The home is immaculate. There are mountain bikes waiting for us on the front porch.
The food has been spectacular and amazing. Every meal has literally been a work of art. We have eaten breakfast and dinner in the main dining room and had lunch by the pool. Last night we requested the option of having a barbecue at our villa. We expected a grill and a cooler with some meat in it. Instead, a team of people showed up and set up an outdoor dining experience we will never, ever forget. We grilled giant prawns, corn, portobello mushrooms, lamb chops, steaks, fish and scallops under the stars! There were 3 different exquisite salads, a charcuterie platter and gorgeous desserts, cheese and fruits. One of the chefs came by to explain everything to us and was so lovely to us. There were candles and white tablecloths and every implement and accessory and condiment you could imagine. We were in awe. It was one of the best meals I have ever had.
There is an excellent choice of inclusive wines and beers and every one we have tried has been lovely.
The Glow Worm hike was wonderful. The walk was the perfect level of difficulty for us (slightly strenuous) and a great length (it took us about 3.5 hours) and the Glow Worm tunnel was fascinating. The resort equipped us with backpacks filled with water, fruit and nut mix and a radio so we could call in and be retrieved on when we were done.
Our only word of caution to our fellow travelers who are not accustomed to driving on the left side of the road — don’t do what we did and rent a car in Sydney and drive here. You don’t need a car when you are here (in fact you will be required to leave it at the front gate) and Wolgan Road, which you have to navigate to get to the resort, has an extremely narrow and twisted stretch that was a nail biter. Have the resort pick you up or take the helicopter. Not looking forward to the drive back. I will say that Australian drivers sure are nicer and more patient than drivers in the United States. Consider this a shout out to everyone who didn’t honk at us for our scary driving on our way here!!
Also for anyone who has never seen a Kangaroo and their similar relatives, and would like to see them, this is your place. We have seen literally hundreds and they are all over the property. We have also seen wombats and many interesting birds.
It has been magical.
This place is so great it was worth every minute of the 36 hours it took us to get here.
One more day — maybe a family picnic?!
My husband and I stayed at this wonderful property for our wedding anniversary for 3 nights of pure heaven! From the time we arrived to the time we left it was 100per cent relaxing and enjoyable. A great place to recharge your batteries and get away from the rat race. Staff are attentive and professional. The food delicious, the activities are plenty and spa just heaven. Thank you for an amazing time.
Highly recommend you put this one on your bucket list!
We spent a weekend at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley Resort in mid May and found it to be a great short stay destination. 2, 3 or maybe 4 nights would be about right. Longer than that and you might start getting restless.
This is a pretty isolated spot (3 hours drive from Sydney) and the drive in has an "interesting" section as you come over the ridge and drop down into the valley. Nowadays the road is sealed so no need for a 4WD - although in years gone by when it was gravel and dirt I imagine it would have been quite challenging.
You arrive at a gatehouse where you unload your vehicle and transfer to resort vehicles which take you up to the main building (known as "The Homestead"). They have a selection of golf carts and Land Rover Defenders for this part of your Wolgan Valley experience and I'm not convinced either of them offer the right first impression for a resort that lays claim to being one of Australia's best hotels.
We were taken up in a Defender which had obviously been used earlier on some kind of 4WD experience given the thick layer of dust outside - and inside. Thankfully we were in jeans and had our old travel bags because there could have been tears if we were in good clothes or had expensive luggage. OK, a Land Rover offers that slight "safari-like" ambiance, but seriously?? Get a Discovery or even a nice people carrier - and keep it clean for the arriving and departing guests.
That said everything else about this place is first class. The staff are friendly and relaxed. The welcome is warm and personal. The Homestead is terrific - if a little bit more Rocky Mountains than Blue Mountains - and the villas are exceptional. I could happily have lived in ours! Each one has an open fire, separate sitting room, spacious bathroom, a walk in wardrobe bigger than some small houses - and its own personal plunge pool. BLISS.
I thought it was a little pricey when I booked - but that was before I realised that all the meals and a very acceptable selection of beverages are included. You can go off piste if you want and order from a well stocked wine cellar, or some fancy cocktails, however we were very happy with what was on offer in the "inclusive" range. The food was very good - breakfast, lunch and dinner.
If you do decide to visit Wolgan Valley then be aware of a couple of things.
You are a long way from anywhere so be ready to settle in - and even though they have a number of activities available this is a spot to relax in for a few days - probably not for a long stay.
There are a range of walking and mountain biking trails if you're the energetic type - and each villa has its own bikes.
There also have horse riding activities - but we were quite disappointed when we were there because we were unable to get a spot on any of them - despite the resort not being full.
The spa is terrific.
On a clear night the sky is incredible!
In my view a visit at a cooler time of year is best. They have fabulous big open fires in the Homestead, and gas logs each villa, so its a great place to snuggle in with a good book and a glass of your favorite wine. Oh, and kangaroos by the truckload!!
Visiting here was a surprise weekend for me and wow it didn’t disappoint. What an wonderful place for an indulgent 2 days. The villas are huge and well appointed. The staff are all just so friendly and helpful. The food is fantastic. And the surrounding area is well amazing, starting with the drive in winding down into the valley. I hope I can return one day.
This was such a superb experience. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a smile. The staff are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and there's a smile and a friendly greeting everytime you walk past a staff member. They engage in conversation and are genuinely interested in you. So, so good. 5 starts for all of the staff.
The villas are great. Spacious and comfortable. Food is delicious and the setting is pure tranquility.
Thank you for a wonderful experience.
