The Lowdown

Though it’s just ten miles from Athens’ bustling core, the Apollo Coast (also dubbed the Athenian Riviera) is a forgotten stretch often skipped over for other Aegean wonders like Santorini and Mykonos. However, the arrival of this worldly five-star is about to transform the upmarket enclave of Vouligameni into the backdrop for a jet-setting vacation. The former Astir Palace, spread across the site of an emblem of Greece’s halcyon days where the guest list included The Beatles, Aristotle Onassis, and Frank Sinatra (who once reportedly escaped through the hotel kitchen to avoid the crowds) is now a citadel-like complex with a Hippocrates-inspired spa and eight eateries. The 303 guest rooms occupy three buildings, ranging from the retro-chic Arion to the sceney-and-social Nafiska to The Bungalows, a set of glamorous, secluded residences set on the oldest—and most coveted—portion of the original estate.

In the Area

Island escapes near Athens are few and far between with the exception of Vouliagmeni, a luxurious seaside suburb just a 45-minute ride from the Greek capital. Dotted with trendy tavernas—don’t miss the fresh seafood at romantic waterfront restaurant BlueFish—the coastal escape is synonymous with its eponymous lake and hot springs that attract wellness wanderers and cave divers eager to explore its underwater mysteries. The magical lake is also becoming an increasingly popular backdrop for theater performances, jazz, and classical music concerts.
