Luxe waterworld for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline

The Look

If Maldivian resorts can be faulted for one thing, it’s that they are perhaps too relaxing. After all, too much time spent lazing in the sun can get tiring. And that’s where the Anantara Veli steps in. A 35-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the luxe property is for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline but don’t want to give up the intimate size of a real tropical escape. Built for water lovers, all 50 bungalows are a built over the Indian Ocean, and there’s an on-site water sports center that can send you to sea to kayak, windsurf or catamaran.

Bed and Bath

The Veli’s 50 bungalows are built over the Indian Ocean and have a contemporary yet simple design that mixes white and beige and is offset by colorful silk and natural wood accents. Not so simple are all the modern amenities, which include flat-screen TVs and terrazzo bathtubs in both the standard and deluxe bungalows (an added perk: Espresso machines are available in the deluxe bungalows). All have idyllic terraces with sun loungers and dining areas, plus stairs that lead directly into the lagoon.

There are six dining options — and even more at sister property Dhigu, which sits across the lagoon — but Baan Huraa is a particular highlight. Built to resemble an oversize Thai pavilion, it is set over the water and serves excellent regional Thai dishes (a signature of the Bangkok-based Anantara chain) with fresh Maldivian ingredients. Foodies can learn to prepare regional, Thai and other Asian fusion dishes at the cooking school, and there’s a top-notch garden spa specializing in Asian-inspired treatments. Or, for more active pursuits, guests have access to an endless range of facilities and activities at both Veli and Dhigu. The fully equipped Aquafanatics Watersports Centre provides kayaks, windsurfboards, catamarans, mini-cats and jet skis, and there’s a surfing program that takes novice and expert riders to some of the Maldives’ best breaks.

So, so amazing

This resort is simply amazing. It is far more beautiful in pictures! The resort, amenities, facilities and staff were wonderful from start to finish! We stayed here for our honeymoon and Anantara definitely specializes in quality and attention to detail. As soon as we stepped off the plane, we were greeted by Maldha in Anantara's private airport lounge while we waited for the other guests. We had a speedboat transfer to the island and were greeted by several staff singing a traditional Maldivian tune. We were immediately shown to our Bungalow by our villa host, Mahir, without even having to stop in reception. Champagne and an absolutely beautiful bungalow was waiting for us. I cannot say enough about the quality of the room and its cleanliness, with the top notch housekeeping staff. Dinner reservations, spa reservations, and excursions were all booked for us through our villa host who found us each day, throughout the resort to see what he could help with. The food was great and all had a high attention to detail. Sea, Fire, Salt was our favourite. I cannot say enough how much the staff make the difference and add to the natural beauty that surrounds this resort. Ismail from housekeeping, Bhupi and Shafi from Dhoni bar and 73 degrees, Nang and Pop from Baan Huraa, Rima, Telma, and Mylanie from the Spa, Shaad from Sea, Fire, Salt, Antoine from Aquafinatics, and our villa host Mahir all went above and beyond every time they saw us to give us the best experience possible. This is the ultimate honeymoon destination! Thank you!!

Surprise anniversary
Reviewed 3 days ago

My husband surprised me with a 30th anniversary trip to the Maldives. It is a beautiful location and very relaxing and hard not to enjoy yourself. All of the staff we met from arrival at the airport, the restaurants to looking after our rooms, the boat drivers to just wondering around were all friendly and went out of there way to help and very knowledgeable about the area. Missy and staff at the spa are fantastic and I could have easily had something done everyday. Coming from Australia and everything in USD plus adding taxes on top made everything very very expensive. Resorts generally are expensive but with the USD-AUD conversion this was over the top. We paid for a meal package for breakfast and dinner & with a quick pontoon ride you have plenty of dining choices over the 2 islands. However, some dishes incur a supplement which limits the meal choices on offer. The food we had at all the restaurants was very good and the steak at sea, fire, salt was exceptional. Breakfast was good offering lots of variety. The room (over water bungalow) was very comfortable and clean and always well stocked with coffee, milk and water. The king bed and pillows were the best. Plenty hot water and fresh towels daily. Wifi anywhere on resort was good. The veranda was a little run down and the dark timber and bathroom overall needed an upgrade and was not what I would call ‘5 star’. We took our own snorkelling gear and reef shoes from home which came in handy. The resort offers honeymoon/anniversary couples a bottle of champagne and cake - but they mucked the delivery time up & it didn’t get delivered before dinner as planned. There was a slight hiccup on our anniversary night but Murey was very apologetic and organised for us to have a very late checkout which was fantastic as our flight wasn’t until 2325. It was a beautiful holiday to celebrate a special occasion.

Memorable Honeymoon

I and my wife had a great time in Anantara Veli, the hotel provided us with the most private room based on our request (181). Maher was very helpful during our stay. Would recommend Anantara Veli to other Honeymooners.

Amazing location, Next to Dighu and Nalanda. The crystal clear waters in lagoon are perfect for snorkeling, kayaking or other activities. Rooms are spacious and well maintained. The most impressive thing about the service was the attention to details. Excellent service by the staff. Definitely recommended for all.
