If Maldivian resorts can be faulted for one thing, it’s that they are perhaps too relaxing. After all, too much time spent lazing in the sun can get tiring. And that’s where the Anantara Veli steps in. A 35-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the luxe property is for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline but don’t want to give up the intimate size of a real tropical escape. Built for water lovers, all 50 bungalows are a built over the Indian Ocean, and there’s an on-site water sports center that can send you to sea to kayak, windsurf or catamaran.
Bed and Bath
The Veli’s 50 bungalows are built over the Indian Ocean and have a contemporary yet simple design that mixes white and beige and is offset by colorful silk and natural wood accents. Not so simple are all the modern amenities, which include flat-screen TVs and terrazzo bathtubs in both the standard and deluxe bungalows (an added perk: Espresso machines are available in the deluxe bungalows). All have idyllic terraces with sun loungers and dining areas, plus stairs that lead directly into the lagoon.
There are six dining options — and even more at sister property Dhigu, which sits across the lagoon — but Baan Huraa is a particular highlight. Built to resemble an oversize Thai pavilion, it is set over the water and serves excellent regional Thai dishes (a signature of the Bangkok-based Anantara chain) with fresh Maldivian ingredients. Foodies can learn to prepare regional, Thai and other Asian fusion dishes at the cooking school, and there’s a top-notch garden spa specializing in Asian-inspired treatments. Or, for more active pursuits, guests have access to an endless range of facilities and activities at both Veli and Dhigu. The fully equipped Aquafanatics Watersports Centre provides kayaks, windsurfboards, catamarans, mini-cats and jet skis, and there’s a surfing program that takes novice and expert riders to some of the Maldives’ best breaks.
How to Get There
I have never wanted to write a review before however Anantara Veli changed my view on reviews. It is hands down the most relaxing, impressive and friendly place we have ever been. We felt like celebrities for 8 nights! We chose the full board package as well as the premium drinks package which gave us access too 7 restaurants and unlimited drinks from 11am to 11pm at night! It was worth every cent, we didn’t have to worry about money and was more financially viable that way! My husband is gluten free and at every restaurant that catered for that! It wasn’t an issue at all!! The food was incredibly fresh and healthy!!! We added a few extras to our trip, we went swimming with the Nurse Sharks which is a must and my husband went surfing off some of the best reef breaks! On check out they let us stay till 5pm in our room as I am pregnant and did everything in their power to make things happen as we asked! The staff are so personable and friendly and go out of their way to remember your names and regular orders. A 6 out of 5 star honeymoon for sure!!!!
From the moment we set foot on the jetty we were greeted with so much warmth and professionalism. As usual Anantara's service is impeccable and 5 star all the way. Our villa was AMAZING, loved the balcony that steps straight to the sea. Notable mention for the turn down service , we have been to a lot of 5 star hotels but this particular turn down service was perfection. The mat near each side of the bed with the bedroom slippers (his and hers size too!), the water and glass and the flowers at the bed. It was all the lovely details that makes it special.
Food was excellent too, especially the breakfast buffet. So many varieties, it kept us full till lunchtime.
Would recommend Anantara Veli for the privacy and exclusivity of the resort but foremost the service and staff gave the place a special touch that no money can buy.
We are a couple and stayed a total of 9 nights spread across 5 nights @ Dhigu (Sunset Beach Villa) and 4 nights @ Veli (Deluxe Over Water Bungalow). We thoroughly enjoyed our time at both resorts and while at both we moved back and forth via the punt to utilise the restaurants, pool and yoga. We were on half board and ate way too much. The food was great with the themed buffets providing lots of choice and variety. Sometimes we skipped lunch or purchased lunch by the pool while sharing one serve.
Most nights we ate wherever the themed buffet was held (Fushi on Dhigu or 73 Degrees at Veli). The Thai restaurant was great and we ate there twice. We also ate at the Sea Fire Salt however did not try the Terrazzo restaurant (ran out of nights!)
We would definitely go back and stay for at least 9 nights but we thought the Sunset Beach Villa was the better accommodation for us. While the over water was still very good and being able to just dive into the water at any time the larger villa, outdoor bathroom and very shaded front balcony facing the ocean was ideal. We also loved the bikes that you can grab and ride around the resort. If you want to have a quiet day away from kids then pack the supplied beach bag and head to Veli where you can grab a beach bed (with towels and butler service buttons!) or grab pool side beds for the day. We spent hours just relaxing and switching our swimming between the pool and ocean.
Snorkeling is ok with the best places on Veli under the villas near the beach out the front of the Aqua Bar and on picnic island where we spent a few hours which also was relaxing with food and drinks available.
As everyone says the drinks are expensive but we knew before we arrived and expected it. Being from Australia the ++ charges then conversion meant a nice bill when we checked out.
I enjoyed the scuba diving with Aquafanatics and completed 2 morning double dives. I am AOW with nitrox certification and nitrox is provided at no additional cost. Very good Dive Master (Adam) and a top notch boat with just myself on the first trip and one other on the second trip. Nice relaxed diving using drift and around 50-55 minutes per dive (~25m).
The wife said the massage at the spa was the best she ever had.
Recommend this resort highly - will be back.
