If Maldivian resorts can be faulted for one thing, it’s that they are perhaps too relaxing. After all, too much time spent lazing in the sun can get tiring. And that’s where the Anantara Veli steps in. A 35-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the luxe property is for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline but don’t want to give up the intimate size of a real tropical escape. Built for water lovers, all 50 bungalows are a built over the Indian Ocean, and there’s an on-site water sports center that can send you to sea to kayak, windsurf or catamaran.
Bed and Bath
The Veli’s 50 bungalows are built over the Indian Ocean and have a contemporary yet simple design that mixes white and beige and is offset by colorful silk and natural wood accents. Not so simple are all the modern amenities, which include flat-screen TVs and terrazzo bathtubs in both the standard and deluxe bungalows (an added perk: Espresso machines are available in the deluxe bungalows). All have idyllic terraces with sun loungers and dining areas, plus stairs that lead directly into the lagoon.
There are six dining options — and even more at sister property Dhigu, which sits across the lagoon — but Baan Huraa is a particular highlight. Built to resemble an oversize Thai pavilion, it is set over the water and serves excellent regional Thai dishes (a signature of the Bangkok-based Anantara chain) with fresh Maldivian ingredients. Foodies can learn to prepare regional, Thai and other Asian fusion dishes at the cooking school, and there’s a top-notch garden spa specializing in Asian-inspired treatments. Or, for more active pursuits, guests have access to an endless range of facilities and activities at both Veli and Dhigu. The fully equipped Aquafanatics Watersports Centre provides kayaks, windsurfboards, catamarans, mini-cats and jet skis, and there’s a surfing program that takes novice and expert riders to some of the Maldives’ best breaks.
How to Get There
Listen to me!! LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!!!!!
This was honestly the best trip we have ever taken in our lives, my wife and I are extremely well travelled and have been to a lot of luxury vacations.
We have seen a lot of nice beaches and tropical islands but the water color, the clarity, the ambiance and the ability to walk down your balcony and take your staircase into the ocean is a dream.
We had been married for 5 years but decided to have our wedding here and what a great decision that was! They do it right.
They give you the 5 star treatment ALL THE WAY AROUND. The service and kind staff is almost as beautiful as the entire island itself.
Honestly, best trip of our lives.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Anantara. I have traveled all over the world and visited all 7 continents. I always dreamt of going to the Maldives - bucket list item for scuba diving for as long as I can remember! We booked the Ocean View Bungalows with a private pool for 4 nights for this special occasion. This area was very secluded with no islands or people in sight. We would’ve stayed longer but we were in Bali the week before.
I am a Marriott/SPG Platinum member (merger) due to travels for work but decided to stay at the Anantara because we have enjoyed this resort so much while visiting Thailand. I would very much recommend this hotel.
The housekeeper for room 204 was amazing!! I can’t say this enough! ! He came by maybe two to three times a day to ensure there was no sand or salt water on our floors, replenished our water, provided new towels, and made our bed!! He assisted us with fixing our hot water issue (we took cold showers the first night) by calling someone when nobody at the front desk answered.
You will encounter the most gorgeous clear waters and clean white sands you might ever see. (Except one area you can find in the negative section.) We stayed at the Conrad Bora Bora and must say that the sand is much more beautiful in the Maldives!
Overall, the staff were very nice and attentive and knew who we were. The breakfast staff were excellent !
If you’re on your honeymoon, they will provide you with a complementary bottle champagne on your first night and decorated bedding which was very nice!
The diving crew at Aquafanatics was great! I booked a scuba trip - you have to head over the the sister island- but was unsure where to meet so they had a staff walk me to the pick up point with a golf cart waiting for me on the other side.
The food is better than Bora Bora, if you wish to compare. (It’s not really a comparison.) The buffet breakfast was good. I would recommend the eggs Benedict! I would also recommend Japanese night if you like shabu shabu and delicious desserts.
The scuba diving was decent but not what I was expecting. Maybe I should’ve done a liveaboard if I wanted the experience my friend had when he was here. We saw a school of sharks, a sting ray, and lots of fish. The corals were mainly bleached.
Mughni, our private butler, was probably over extended to no fault of his own. He was not always available to assist us so we ended us doing a lot of things ourselves such as booking dinner, excursions etc. I honestly didn’t expect much as I’ve stayed at nice hotels all over the world but the hubby was disappointed so I’d thought I’d share this. He will absolutely not be feeding you grapes as he’s not a slave! I do, however, wish he would’ve gone over our meal options and show us around the islands - it was raining the first afternoon we arrived so maybe that’s the reason he did not do this. I do wish he would have taken some photos of us around the resort.
I’m not a big complainer but we booked the “Picnic Hamper” for lunch on a “private island”. This was probably the most horrific experience I have ever had. First, the picnic looks nothing like the photo they show. Second, we did not get to pick a spot on the island. It was picked for us (eye roll!) Third, we experienced tens of thousands of hermit crabs and ants climbing onto our picnic baskets and all over our picnic blanket that we were not able to enjoy at all!! Forth, yes there is a forth! The beach area was disgusting. You would think they would clean up the beach area at least??!? I called Mughni to let him know and he was kindly able to give this to us for free which was nice but please give me back my hour. I would’ve wished to have ordered food to our bungalow instead and enjoy it overlooking the nice ocean waves.
We came to Anantara Veli for our honeymoon and it was a real paradise! We got welcomed by very nice reception staff and got something to drink. The receptionist showed us the area and explained all the doubts and questions. Everybody working on the island was extremely friendly and helpful, we felt how attentive they were and it made our stay unforgettable. The room was very clean, the bedsheets and towels replaced every day, and sometimes they surprised us with an amazing decorated bed with flowers. We also got invited to the Maldivian dinner with live music and typical dishes. All the restaurants here serve amazing food, the best quality food. The thing I liked most was the honeymoon evening cocktail party for all the couples celebrating the honeymoon, we got a photo and a beautiful wooden heart with our surname, such a personalised gift! What is more, the island is full of exotic animals, such as crabs, lizards, and fishes which made our stay original and very memorable.
Thank you Mughni and Meeko for treating us so well and all the attention and effort that you put to make our honeymoon holidays special!
The resort is stunning, picturesque!
All staff were extremely exceptional, accomodating, professional, nice, friendly and they always have a smile on their face. Thank you everyone for making our trip memorable and special thanks to Jen, Bokey, Mughini, Meeko, and Adam the room boy! We will definitely come back again :).
We stayed 5 nights to the Anantara Veli Superior Over Water Villa. The experience was incredible. The island it’s very well conserved and full of life in the water as outside (crabs and birds).
The snorkel equipment it’s for free and you can take 2 hours kayak per day. You can take a boat to go to Dighu and get experiences on both resorts having many restaurants and spots to take photos or dive.
We had a full board plan and you can choose in every meal started, main course and dessert from the menu or have a buffet (depending on the restaurant). It was too much food for us, half board would be enough but almost all what we tried was really good so you are tempted to try as much dishes as you can. The drinks are not included but you can have some water, coffee and tea in the villa free and we were served fresh water at the swimming pool also for free.
The staff of the whole resort it’s very attentive and helpful. Most of them greet you everytime you cross them and are open to help. Thanks a lot to Mughni and Meeko from the reception who were the two pearls of this paradise.
