If Maldivian resorts can be faulted for one thing, it’s that they are perhaps too relaxing. After all, too much time spent lazing in the sun can get tiring. And that’s where the Anantara Veli steps in. A 35-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the luxe property is for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline but don’t want to give up the intimate size of a real tropical escape. Built for water lovers, all 50 bungalows are a built over the Indian Ocean, and there’s an on-site water sports center that can send you to sea to kayak, windsurf or catamaran.
Bed and Bath
The Veli’s 50 bungalows are built over the Indian Ocean and have a contemporary yet simple design that mixes white and beige and is offset by colorful silk and natural wood accents. Not so simple are all the modern amenities, which include flat-screen TVs and terrazzo bathtubs in both the standard and deluxe bungalows (an added perk: Espresso machines are available in the deluxe bungalows). All have idyllic terraces with sun loungers and dining areas, plus stairs that lead directly into the lagoon.
There are six dining options — and even more at sister property Dhigu, which sits across the lagoon — but Baan Huraa is a particular highlight. Built to resemble an oversize Thai pavilion, it is set over the water and serves excellent regional Thai dishes (a signature of the Bangkok-based Anantara chain) with fresh Maldivian ingredients. Foodies can learn to prepare regional, Thai and other Asian fusion dishes at the cooking school, and there’s a top-notch garden spa specializing in Asian-inspired treatments. Or, for more active pursuits, guests have access to an endless range of facilities and activities at both Veli and Dhigu. The fully equipped Aquafanatics Watersports Centre provides kayaks, windsurfboards, catamarans, mini-cats and jet skis, and there’s a surfing program that takes novice and expert riders to some of the Maldives’ best breaks.
How to Get There
Our stay at Anantara Veli for our Honeymoon was fantastic! Before arrival, we upgraded to an Deluxe Over Water Bungalow and requested a room between 173-180. As we wanted a room with more privacy and not directly facing other rooms or boat entry ways etc. I would recommend researching the layout or types of rooms before you arrive- so you get what you are expecting.
We were very happy to get room 172, with our fantastic Room Boys ‘Muaz’ and ‘Chunky’. They not only left us special messages, but ‘Muaz’ in particular asked us (whenever he saw us) if there was anything he could do or just how we were going in general. Which was very kind of him.
The food at all the restaurants was very delicious and filling!! We had full board and this would include water at breakfast, but not lunch and dinner. However if needed, you can bring your complimentary water bottles from your room to meals. You can also travel to and from Dhigu for the other restaurants as well.
All the staff were very helpful, caring and enjoyed getting to know us better or suggested things to make our stay better. Like arranging our bookings for meals throughout the day or explaining places to go see more marine life. Even assisting us to have a later check out, as our flight didn’t leave until much later in the evening.
In particular, a special thankyou to these staff who made our Honeymoon and 30th Birthday stay a once in a lifetime trip! Bokey, Mo, Kudey, Muaz, Haneef, Saleem, Raj, Jen, Chunky, Brij & Dizhar from the Spa.
One of the best Decisions made for a Proper retreat.
Excellent Service And wide Variety of Restaurants (Wouldn't mind to go back just to try the food )
Rooms and the view are just WOW.
Must try the water Sports specially the Manta ray Snorkeling
Wonderful hotel, very kind staff, delicious food (teppanyaki and thai restaurants were excellent) , comfy bed, a lot of sea life in the lagoon, complimentary water activities (kayak, snorkeling), excellent spa experience... cero complaints from us
This beach getaway was exactly what I needed. I am not big on large resorts with tons of people crowding you with loud music blasting, which is why I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Anatara. The calm serenity of the blue beaches contrasted by the white sand was precisely the reset my soul craved. In addition, the Thai and Indian cuisines were delicious. I definitely recommend Anatara Maldives for those looking to unplug from the hustle and bustle of the busy world. Cheers!
It was a fabulous experience. For South Africans though with the exchange rate it was very expensive when purchasing food etc. So i would recommend either H/B or F/B as everything is USD based. But in having said that it was fabulous and the resort is highly recommended for couples. The over the water bungalows were amazing spacious and had everything you could possibly need. The staff were amazing caring kind attentive friendly always had a smile on their faces courteous and knowledgeable. We loved our stay!
