If Maldivian resorts can be faulted for one thing, it’s that they are perhaps too relaxing. After all, too much time spent lazing in the sun can get tiring. And that’s where the Anantara Veli steps in. A 35-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the luxe property is for travelers who take their beach vacations with a shot of adrenaline but don’t want to give up the intimate size of a real tropical escape. Built for water lovers, all 50 bungalows are a built over the Indian Ocean, and there’s an on-site water sports center that can send you to sea to kayak, windsurf or catamaran.
Bed and Bath
The Veli’s 50 bungalows are built over the Indian Ocean and have a contemporary yet simple design that mixes white and beige and is offset by colorful silk and natural wood accents. Not so simple are all the modern amenities, which include flat-screen TVs and terrazzo bathtubs in both the standard and deluxe bungalows (an added perk: Espresso machines are available in the deluxe bungalows). All have idyllic terraces with sun loungers and dining areas, plus stairs that lead directly into the lagoon.
There are six dining options — and even more at sister property Dhigu, which sits across the lagoon — but Baan Huraa is a particular highlight. Built to resemble an oversize Thai pavilion, it is set over the water and serves excellent regional Thai dishes (a signature of the Bangkok-based Anantara chain) with fresh Maldivian ingredients. Foodies can learn to prepare regional, Thai and other Asian fusion dishes at the cooking school, and there’s a top-notch garden spa specializing in Asian-inspired treatments. Or, for more active pursuits, guests have access to an endless range of facilities and activities at both Veli and Dhigu. The fully equipped Aquafanatics Watersports Centre provides kayaks, windsurfboards, catamarans, mini-cats and jet skis, and there’s a surfing program that takes novice and expert riders to some of the Maldives’ best breaks.
How to Get There
We were very hesitant to travel to Maldives to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary, it's very far from the US, and there's Bora Bora, Tahiti that is only a little over 8 hours flight from LAX, they also have overwater bungalows and an amazing lagoon, but we were so glad we made it to Anantara Veli ,Maldives, it's as beautiful as Bora Bora on it's own way, the water is warmer and the costumer service is top notched, very warm people, they really figured out service, the rest of the world can learn from them. We really liked our room boy Chunky, and Menette at the reception and so many others we can't remember their names, everybody was wonderful. Would definitely recommend this resort and would love to come back someday. I would suggest checking out other countries in Asia like Thailand, Dubai, Singapore, Vietnam and/or the Philippines to break the long ang exhausting travel, and maybe just staying 5 days if staying in one island/one resort. It's all worth the pain of travel, Maldives is a bucket list destination. We love it very much!
Very nice stay, but there can be big deference between rooms that are sold as equal, depending on how close they are to the beach and how much marine life you can explore from your bungalow.
Food and restaurants keeps a very high quality!
I dont think its easy to describe our experience at Anantara Veli in a few words. From the moment from our arrival at the airport till the time of our departure everything was breathtaking. The staff were very courteous, the facilities very modern and ambient. the location of the resort itself is very astounding.
The resort itself has a calming effect on minds plus the safety and security of guests and employees are kept in mind at all times.
We were really happy about the Valentines day games and after party.
Very glad that we planned our stay at Anantara.
The whole island is like a paradise! The staff is 100% , they are the most nicest and helpfull staff i ever had .
The only thing that i need to mention, that the time went through the hotel.. it menas they need renovate it , othervise it is not gonna reach the 5 star level. in our bathroom the groove is inclomplete. the sunbed draft was torn on our terrace .
however the whole place was wonderfull, if they renovate the hotel will reach the 5star.
