From the point of arrival, the staff were warm, friendly, professional & expedient. Everyone we encountered from the most amazing Pedro, who is new to the hotel & greeted us each time he saw us in the hotel, to the check-in staff who accommodated our check-in requests, housekeeping, breakfast dining staff, to the bartender Aitor who aimed for perfection in delivery of our drinks - all were excellent.
There seems to be many options for lodging accommodations in San Sebastián, but if you want an outstanding experience, and are willing to pay for it, this hotel is for you.
The king beds are massively huge and comfortable, and even a regular room is generously sized. Plenty of closet space, and extra hangers were delivered almost instantaneously.
The concierge desk was a great resource both before & during our stay. We were with 2 other couples, and all of us have thoroughly enjoyed our stay & have had equally pleasant experiences. Having investigated the city, other hotels, this hotel location, and the experience at this hotel, I would recommend no other hotel in San Sebastián.
Here’s one negative aspect, the booking was through Marriott (Bonvoy). When calling ahead of arrival for 2 requested changes to our reservation, I spoke to 2 “800 number” staff persons, one of whom claimed to be a supervisor, and both could not have been more unhelpful & unprofessional - completely askew to the outstanding experience we encountered at the hotel. These two people clearly lacked an appreciation for how best to communicate with and assist a guest who would be booking at a luxury hotel. Important to note, had we not planned to be with friends on vacation, I would have probably changed hotels based upon my pre-arrival experience with “Bonvoy’. They really need to step it up. Thankfully the grand staff at the hotel quickly erased my negative feelings.
Prior to arrival, I focused my reading of reviewers on many of the less than favorable reviews of the hotel. My experience was nothing like their descriptions. One reviewer suggested the hotel catered to large groups & meetings. I didn’t find any such common experience in 7 days here. Yes there were groups traveling together, but most every guest I observed & encountered at the hotel seemed to be like minded travelers looking for a quality luxury hotel experience.
Thank you to the hotel staff (& compliments to Pedro) for an excellent experience and positive lifetime memories.
This is a superb hotel in every way. Thanks to Nora our check-in was seamless - she was friendly and helpful and all with a wonderful smile.
Great room with wonderful view.
Rodrigues was particularly helpful when we had a problem with confirming our airport transfer.
Only slight hiccup occurred on our final night when our drink order in the dry bar was completely wrong and we had to request our food twice.
Whenever i can( afford), i would like to stay Luxury collections hotel in Europe. There was other and inexpensive option , but I decided to stay here again. Of course it is a beautiful hotel and a great location. But what is the best was concierge service. She ( i am sorry I can’t remember her name) was The best concierge. She made my trip the best in San Sebastián by recommending a great restaurant and made a last minute reservation at the restaurant with only 5 seats and holding one of dishes which many guest in restaurant didn’t get served. ( what a detail and thoughtful arrangements)Without her help, i would had not have same memory of San Sebastián. I still think about that restaurant ‘s meal. Definitely this is the reason for me keep using Luxury collections hotel. ( not ofter because it is expensive) A great service in breakfast time ,of course, and nice and relax breakfast is must to have here.
I am a Marriott Platinum Elite member and am very loyal to the line of hotels, I booked the Maria Cristina for four nights for a special trip with my husband but I used credit card points and maybe that was my downfall.
We weren't able to get an early check in and I was actually told that it didn't matter that I was a Platinum member since they were almost at capacity and that the room I was going to be given would have to do. We were never told about the special daily events (we came to San Sebastian for the foodie experience and would have loved to have known about the cooking classes offered by the hotel and Mimo). The Wifi is also really terrible and hardly works in the rooms. I honestly think the hotel mostly caters to big conventions and groups and aren't really concerned about families or couples which is such a shame.
The positives are that the rooms are clean and the hotel is in a good location. Next time we will be defecting from Marriott and will try Akelarre (where my husband wanted to go) or Hotel Londres.
If you want to be treated special as a Marriott member, go to Marques de Riscal in Elciego. It is a beautiful hotel with wonderful customer service.
