How to Get There
This hotel shines in a quiet refined elegance. Service was very attentive and helpful. Some older hotels have dated bathrooms but this hotel had beautiful updated accomodations. The breakfast is quite something. If you are a points person, the breakfast is a much better option.
I can not say enough nice things about this hotel. It is the perfect location, walking distance to everything and right across the street from the beautiful river and a short walk to the beach. Our room was wonderful. Gorgeous view, comfortable bed, amazing shower. We literally walked everywhere to eat and it was so nice at night to walk back along the river or old town.
But the best part of the hotel was the customer service from the staff and especially the General Manager. They arranged a private car for us to go to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, about an hours drive. The hotel made it so easy for us, anything we needed they were there to help. When we were leaving the property to go to Barcelona, it was in the middle of the taxi strike and we were worried about how we would get from the airport to the next hotel. The General Manager called over to the next hotel, to make sure they knew we were coming, gave us suggestions about our travel, and followed up with an email after we had arrived at our next location to make sure we had arrived with no problems. Not only will we recommend this hotel to friends and family without hesitation, we are already planning our next trip back. We have stayed at many amazing hotels all over the world, the Maria Cristina is now one of our very favorites and we can not wait to return. Thank you to the wonderful staff and especially the GM for making our vacation special! Barri K
The elegance of the beautiful rooms and location are certainly five star, but the service at this hotel was provincial at every turn and did not match standards for an international five star hotel. My family and I had two beautiful connecting rooms, one of which was a spacious, elegant suite, for six days, but were unfortunately treated as if we were country cousins imposing on the snobbish, ungracious staff. Upon our arrival, we went to the bar for something to eat and were ignored for at least a half an hour. On another occasion, my husband was served a drink in the bar and finished it before mine ever arrived. In the breakfast room, we were apparently very gauche to try to order items a la carte, and created an embarrassing fluster trying to do so. Worst of all, our daughter's precious stuffed animal that she has slept with every night of her life, was taken with the sheets by housekeeping and lost for good at the laundry. We had to ask every day at the desk whether there was any update, which there never was, and when I wrote to the hotel after our departure asking if they could please continue to look for it, I received the unhelpful one line response "unfortunately it was not found." Housekeeping delivered fruit upon our arrival, but let the uneaten pieces sit in our room for three days rotting before taking them away. One night we ordered room service and called three times to ask for the table to be cleared afterwards over the course of several hours, but they never came. I dared to ask the concierge where the closest pharmacy was, and I felt that I was a terrible nuisance bothering her with such a question. San Sebastian is a lovely town and worth a visit, and this hotel is very grand and well maintained and elegant, and I appreciated those aspects, but the service is two star, at best.
A a very classic and classy hotel with attentive service and great concierge. Fantastic beds. Service on outdoor patio was personable with fine attention to detail. Cooking school is recommended, Walking distance to old town and the wonderful city beaches. The only thing missing is a Spa/Sauna
My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in July using SPG points. It was our first visit to San Sebastian and our first stop on a 4 week European holiday and probably spoiled us for the rest of our holiday. We had a large room overlooking the courtyard. I was mostly impressed with the bathroom with plenty of towels and amenities plus it was huge! And the softest toilet paper and towels of any hotel I have stayed in and we have travelled a lot. Our bed and pillows were very comfortable. We didn't points over breakfast as found the breakfast quite expensive and instead enjoyed going outside to find cafes to enjoy breakfast. We specifically enjoyed Sakona across the bridge who do amazing coffee.
The hotel bar is expensive (fantastic cocktails!!) but that is to be expected as this is the number one hotel in San Seb and deserves to be as it is gorgeous and luxurious. The foyer and the stairwell remind me of the holiday palace it once was for royalty and you certainly feel special staying here. Plus it was so close to the old town and main beach no transport is required but they do have bicycles available if you desire but you need to book them in advance as we asked one day but fully booked as last minute. The staff and friendly and helpful.
My only negative is the Asian restaurant in the hotel. On our last night we were exhausted so decided to eat in the hotel but the food was very disappointing. I wouldn't rate it at all. Especially compared to the large number of wonderful pintox bars within walking distance. San Seb is foodie heaven!
