How to Get There
What can one say really, this is true 5 star luxury. Everything is impeccably decorated and the service is spot on, bit not cloying. It is all set in an old building which oozes charm. It is decorated in shades of grey with lilac and rose tinges. It is the kind of place where bathrooms are all marble, real marble. The facilities are faultless really, with bedding that is spectacularly comfortable, and with a 12.00 noon check out, a sleep in can be well forgiven! This is a splurge hotel in a location that cannot be beaten. It is a short walk to everything that matters in San Sebastian. Our only slight gripe is that for the room rates, breakfast really should be included. So, treat yourself and stay here at least once, but save the shekels to do so – or use frequent flyer points as we did. Do not stay here if luxury lodgings cramps your style.
This is an absolutely beautiful hotel in a great location. The rooms was fantastic, very spacious and with all comforts. The bed was extremely comfortable. All staff is very attentive and the breakfast is superb. They also offer great pinxtos tour (at extra price). They were very helpful at recommending good restaurants and making reservations for us. We absolutely loved our stay here. The only minus is the extremely slow service at their beautiful bar, probably due to the crowd, however we had to leave without being able to get a drink after waiting for 25 minutes.
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Maria Cristina for three weeks through the end of December 2018 and beginning of January 2019. It was a wonderful stay, made possible by the high standards of the hotel and the hospitality of the staff. The Maria Cristina offers old-world charm and an elegant luxury imbued with a historical charm. However, the one thing that really made this hotel stand out among other hotels I have stayed at is the amazing service. We were recognized as Marriott/SPG Platinum members throughout our stay, and even received an upgrade to the beautiful Royal Suite with lovely views of the waterfront. We also received free access to the extensive breakfast buffet every morning of our stay, which was an incredible value. The breakfast offers a variety of delicious items, including fresh sliced fruits, smoked salmon, and Iberian ham. We looked forward to the breakfast every morning despite the fact that San Sebastian has so many other great food offerings.
The hotel truly offers five star service, which is often forgotten in many five star hotels today. It is clear that their service has not suffered from the Marriott merger. The staff was extremely prompt in addressing requests, and anytime we would call the front desk they would quickly answer to offer assistance. The cleaning service would also often be able to clean our room shortly after we requested them to. Additionally, the staff was very good at learning requests. When we requested fresh teacups and silverware be brought at 1 pm everyday for our "tea time", the hotel was excellent at adhering to this without the need for us to remind them. The hotel also showed hospitality around Christmas and the New Year, with Champagne and tapas being served gratis.
In regards to the room, everything was very clean and we always felt pampered and comfortable during our stay. The bed was luxurious, with many fluffy down pillows. Usually I have difficulty sleeping in hotel beds, but I had no problems at all with this one. The room curtains were also well arranged to create total darkness in the bedroom for excellent sleep- we actually ended up sleeping almost 13 hours one night, not realizing the time! The style of the room maintained its historical charm while being useable and updated to modern times. Another important thing to note was the WiFi was fast and reliable. Furthermore, the toiletries were frequently replaced and fresh towels were changed every day so that the room always felt like it did the first time we walked in. The hotel also provided complimentary pressing of two items of clothing per day, which was very convenient.
We never felt like we were lacking anything during our stay. Even the hotel gym was more than I expected, with a reasonable set of dumbbells up to 40kg and also cable machines and a number of cardio machines. The machines and workout areas were kept clean and they even offer free granola bars and fruit, as well as a water station in the gym.
San Sebastian is a fantastic location that should be at the top of anyone's list, and if you are planning a visit you should consider staying at the Maria Cristina if you want to make your trip that much more memorable. All in all this hotel is without question the best in San Sebastian, and arguably the greatest in Spain. I can recommend it without hesitation.
Ideally located within walking distance of "everywhere", and we walked everywhere from Maria Cristina, to La Concha's perch, to the statute of Christ, or shall I say we "pintxo" our way . Great daily breakfast brunch indeed. BUT!!! This hotel has the absolute BEST HOTEL BAR I HAVE EVER VISITED. I ordered the gin and tonic to start , end, and in between), and the "Lost in Translation" cocktail was heavenly, even if served in a very feminine half glass/half tea cup (not to worry, I curled my pinky when sipping) . You have to really be in the know about whisky b4 you can catch on about the selection/pricing, but it was readily obvious on the drink menu if you're a collector. Needles to say I picked a bottle of HIBIKI17. DONE!!!
Hotel Maria Cristina is a legendary hotel of the elegant city of San Sebastian. The Art Deco-style suite in which we stayed was steps away from the Betty Davis suite in which the Hollywood actress stayed during the San Sebastian Film Festival. Surrounded by beautiful nineteenth century buildings and terrific restaurants, Hotel Maria Cristina offers a fantastic location, excellent service and all the modern comforts. The hotel breakfast is ample and features a variety of local dishes. Staff is friendly and attentive.
