Overview

The Review

Puertecillo, about 100 miles from Santiago, is revered by surfers for its lack of crowds, laid-back ambiance and long left-break waves. In other words, a rugged adventurer’s undiscovered paradise. Sitting in the campo (countryside) high above the beach, the Ruca Lodge overlooks the sand and surf below, offering a haven for just such travelers.

A wooden lodge with splashes of contemporary decor, the six-room Ruca Lodge has spectacular landscape views nearly devoid of people. Fussier travelers will be better off elsewhere, but those seeking a more soulful beach visit will find their match here. The young owners are friendly and provide attentive, bilingual service; home-style meals are prepared by a local cook; and the vibe is comfy and relaxed.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/1918/prop-34701-1319049014-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”After a day out on the surf, enjoy home-cooked, hearty meals back at the lodge.”}

In all, the intimate lodge houses a living area, a dining area, an outdoor firepit and a stone-lined pool. The guestrooms feature downy comforters (especially nice on Chile’s chillier nights), private slate-tiled bathrooms and small terraces. Numerous decks offer scenic spots for having breakfast while enjoying the fresh air. In the afternoon, hop in a hammock for an alfresco snooze.

Naturally, most travelers come here to surf, and the local scene includes a surf school that can arrange board and wetsuit rentals (you’ll want the wetsuit — the water is cold here year-round). But there are other activities available, like dune buggy rides, birdwatching and hiking along the coast.

Because the Ruca Lodge is remote, most guests eat on-site, tucking into hearty meals of local specialties and fresh seafood after a day out on the breaks. It’s all part of the throwback lifestyle in Chile’s central coast.

Bad experience

I bought a promotion for a weekend in this hotel but sadly I couldn’t use it because a very sorry situation. I asked if they have room for certain dates for book a double room and they answered “yes, we have availability for that weekend”. I mentioned if I could go with my baby of 2 months and the answer was that they need verify their policies about it, because they do not accept children under 12 years old, ñ but the guy that was talking to me wasn’t sure about babies, he said some thing like “yes I think that babies can stay at the hotel”. I thought that he will contact to me briefly to confirm the information with (I guess) his/her boss, but the answer came till the next day in the afternoon, saying that they accept babies under 3 months, so it was ok for me. But the irritating situation came after, he said to me that the hotel was full now for the weekend that I wanted, and offer me be in the “waiting list” for those dates. This is an unacceptable situation, if I booked at the start for those dates and they do not reserve a space because the doubt about if I can stay with a baby, they should reserve a space till they clarify the information. I feel sorry for the hotel because it’s seems a very nice place but the guy that answer the phone and answer the emails doesn’t show much interest in have good manners neither respect the potential guests.

It was our first time in Puertecillo and despite the fact that it is a little difficult to get there, the hotel staff did more than enough to help us to get there.
They gave us a map with instructions and even photos of the most important instructions.
The hotel owners are the main staff and they are awesome.
Beautiful rooms with a nice fire place and a great view of the hot spring like pool
We had a very nice experience, enjoyed the bonfire, were very pleased with the home style breakfast and liked the food and the wines served.
Overall an amazing days and looking forward to get back there soon

Worth It

This a great getaway with excellent service and amenities considering the location. Puertecillo is a small and remote surf town without many options to stay. The property, though pricey, is an excellent option for a weekend (or more if you can) stay whether you want to surf, bike, walk, or just relax. We especially enjoyed the heated swimming pool.

A great escape from Santiago

This is an amazing escape from Santiago close to Puertecillo. Tomás and Mariela are amazing hosts. The architecture and decor of the lodge is amazing. In the evening they will light up the fire pit and sitting outside watching the stars is the ultimate relaxation.

Unfortunately, when we were visiting the Chef was sick, so I can not comment on the quality of the cuisine.

They hotel will lend surf boards and suits and they also have bikes to do treks around the area.

Please note that going to this lodge in a 4-wheel drive vehicle is advisable so that you can make it down "La Cuchilla" to Puertecillo.
