Beautiful property and friendly staff
Reviewed 3 months ago

We absolutely loved our stay at this small and lovely hotel. We came in November with our two children. From the time of booking, the hotel was very accommodating of the fact that we were traveling with kids and needed two adjoining rooms. Upon arrival, the front desk staff could not have been more friendly or helpful, helping us unload and also providing restaurant recommendations for Bayeux. We absolutely loved the bartender on duty for one of the evenings we were there - Remmie. He delighted us with custom creations. We didn't dine at the hotel other than breakfast, only because it seemed too fancy for children.
The adjoining rooms we had were really both lovely. The beds could not have been more comfortable; the bathrooms were excellent; the windows opened to let in fresh air.
The hotel is quite ideal for touring the beaches of Normandy, being very close to Omaha beach and the US Cemetery. It is also reasonably close to the charming town of Bayeux.
We also had the privilege of meeting the owner one evening in the bar, and he was lovely. We will definitely return if we have the opportunity!

Short stay to tour Normandie

Excellent reviews led us to this luxury hotel. The rooms were nice and cozy and the help was very friendly. We ate at the hotel the first night and it was ok (mind you we were in Bordeaux for a week eating at great places). The grounds are wonderful but we had a bad patch of weather. The breakfast buffet was great....Our room was by the elevator but there is a double door so no noise..

Four nights in a tired property

Chateau La Cheneviere is tired. The elegant property (which is beautiful) cannot hide its overall fatigue. First, I will disagree with several reviewers who have complained about the indifference or unfriendliness of the staff. Quite to the contrary I found the staff to be quite helpful and friendly. My focus is management.
Management is taking advantage of its guests by letting the property lapse. Paying 600€ per night one expects (and usually receives) a certain level of quality at high end hotels. Let me enumerate:
1. The dining room (ridiculously lit like a kitchen for dinner) serves precious, pretentious, and overpriced food.
2. The furniture in our room were not period pieces, but rather a mishmash of furnishings simply filling space. The sofa in our suite belonged in a college dorm room.
3. The bathroom was small and poorly appointed. The towels and bathmat at the airport Hilton (Charles de Gaulle) were far superior to those at La Cheneviere.
4. The pool was closed because it "wasn't summer". Properties of this caliber should have the pool available 12 months of the year.
5. The gym stunk of paint. Breathing those fumes while working out certainly isn't healthy.
6. Lastly, most guests (staying in five star hotels) when leaving for the day are offered bottles of water. For 600€/night, water was an extra!
There are so many five star resorts in this world well deserving of their rating. Sadly, Chateau La Cheneviere isn't one of them.

Beautiful chateau near Normandy beaches

Our favorite stay during a two week vacation in France. Beautiful building and comfy rooms with perfect service and amenities, The grounds are lovely with a kitchen garden, pool and spacious green lawns. Terrific food in the restaurant. Also loved the creme caramels which are generously distributed throughout. Its very convenient to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery. Highly recommended!

Charming and Luxurious

La Cheneviere is an incredibly beautiful 18th Century Norman chateau. The property is a luxurious five star hotel close to the beaches of Normandy. It was occupied by the Germans for a period during WWII until the Americans landed and took over in June 1944. The once private home was restored to a grandeur that celebrates French classic decor. The staff was quite lovely and accommodating. Make sure you walk the grounds!- they are large with incredible foliage. I loved dining at on site restaurant for both breakfast and dinner as the food tasted out of this world and the service was impeccable.
La Cheneviere was a treat that should not be missed.
