Cozy 10-room retreat in the Peloponnese with an alfresco hot tub overlooking Mainalon mountain

The Lowdown

Been there, done that in Greece? Bypass the tourist trail and explore some of the country’s inland treasures with a stay at Villa Vager, a charming retreat in the Peloponnese with breathtaking views of lush mountains, hilltop villages and pine forest from an altitude of 900 meters. The inmate escape is home to just 10 rooms, all decked out with exposed stone walls, beam ceilings, dark furnishings and characterful features like cozy fireplaces, lanterns and antiques. All bathrooms come with underfloor heating, bathrobes and Molton Brown toiletries. A homemade breakfast buffet is served daily and is laden with Greek produce including thick yogurt, honey, olive bread, kaseri cheese and strong Greek coffee. There’s no restaurant onsite but there are traditional tavernas within walking distance in the village of Levidi. The hotels’s star attraction is a giant alfresco hot tub, positioned to take in the awesome views of the surrounding countryside.

In the Area

The property is around a two-hour drive from Athens, and a 20-minute drive from Tripoli, the capital of the Peloponnese. The hotel can arrange tons of activities in the local area including cooking lessons, wine tours and tastings in the Mantineia wine region, quad biking in the mountains and kayaking on the Ladonas River. Ancient sites in the surrounding Arcadia region include Epidaurus with its 4th-century amphitheater and Olympia, the site of the Olympic Games between the 8th-century BC to the 4th century AD.

Luxury and laid back friendliness, and a welcome like we had come home
Reviewed 1 week ago

A really special mountain hideaway looking over a Homeric plain, with a tumble of classical ruins on a nearby knoll reminded us every moment how history and mythology still exist around us. A true luxury retreat where vines shade the breakfast terrace, the room was super comfortable and breakfast has home made jam and delicious local marmalade.
Our host has great taste, the hotel is designed beautifully with antiques, a big open fire place in the sitting room, a tray of drinks, board games and books,, there are great big sofas to loll in after hiking, and you can book a fantastic massage, this Old stone house hotel is done up to make you feel at home, and it works.
Every detail is taken care of, and the surrounding village is interesting, with a couple of restaurants and bars.
Recommend fully as a true break from everything, we left with the peace of the mountains and really relaxed minds and bodies.

Wonderful hotel

We arrived for 1 night and stayed for 2, adjusting our activities so we could stay for longer. The hotel is beautifully renovated and kept impeccably clean and tidy. The views are wonderful. Everything has been thought of, down to the last detail. The public areas are warm and inviting and so are the bedrooms. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast varied and tasty with delicious freshly squeezed orange juice and any variation of coffee or tea.
The hotel owner is friendly and welcoming, offering advice on both hidden gems to explore (like "take this side road instead of the main route" leading us through a beautiful forest road hugging a river gorge) and eating options. His recommendation of Hani, a local taverna in between the fields, was excellent and surprising. The other staff was as friendly and warm.
There is a note in the room about acoustics - it seems that sound carries between the rooms. We didn't feel it as there was noone staying in the room next door to us.
Our stay at Villa Vager was a highlight and I'm sure we'll be back.

Warm Vacation at villa vager
Reviewed 2 months ago

I recommend Villa Vager for your stay at Levidi either for family vacation or for a loving couple stay. Villa Vager gives you the comfort and the facilities of a 5 star hotel paying less than that. We have been to the hotel with our family and friends. We had booked the whole premise for 3 nights and we felt like home. We enjoyed the outdoor activities including the mountain Mainalo and the adventure with the buggies provided by the hotel. They treated us perfectly with clean rooms and Milton Brown amenities, homemade breakfast and the best suggestions for the around area.
