The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata
What We Love
- Palpable sense of history; this is where prime ministers and viceroys sat and had tea
- Oberoi’s famously attentive service
- A central location, within walking distance of the stock exchange and the Indian Museum
- A lovely outdoor pool
- One of the best restaurants in all of India
What To Know

- The population density in this area of Kolkata can be overwhelming (but the hotel offers an oasis)
- In-room carpeting feels a bit tired
- WiFi costs $20 per day
- Last renovation was in 2007
- Parking On Site

How to Get There
We stayed at the Oberoi Grand as part of a group for one night before and one night after a cruise on the Hooghly River. It is grand indeed but it feels like a family-run hotel, with friendly staff who go out of their way to be helpful. Our rooms were large and sumptuously furnished in Indian style with comfortable big beds, and large fully equipped bathrooms. Although in the middle of Calcutta, the hotel is quiet and we heard no noise from the busy street outside - apart from the firecrackers being let off for Diwali.
The breakfast is amazing with a never-ending choice from the buffet plus hot dishes cooked in front of guests - allow plenty of time to enjoy the expetience. The bar snacks by the large, warm pool were top quality. We had one dinner in the main restaurant, one in the Thai restaurant, and one room service lunch. The menus are quite complicated but the staff were happy to advise us and make recommendations about which dishes can accompany which. Wine is available but is rather expensive.
We wish we'd added an extra couple of days to our holiday just so we could spend time in and enjoy this hotel.
Was in this city many times and also in this New market area but never realized such a gem existed. Its a pretty old styled hotel, built during the British times but well maintained. The rooms are moderately big in size and has all the basic amenities well placed. The staff were very polite and helpful. Breakfast has quite a large spread and had lot of healthier options too.One complaint that i had was that not all channels were available on television and even newspaper options.
We have stayed many times over the last 20 years so have known the hotel through times of change. Currently a great team, from housekeeping to restaurant staff who are very focused on individual customer care. We spent four days feeling so well looked after from the front desk staff to the restaurant team. Friendly willing to help, check out our needs and the new restaurant team made us feel so welcome. The dinner time buffet options were great and the chefs would meet and discuss what your food preferences were and what would you like if not available on the buffet. Several dishes were prepared fresh for us and all done with genuine interest and with pleasure. We felt safe, looked after and valued their great customer / hotel staff relationship. Felt sad to leave the " the Grand family" after four days. If you can do visit and enjoy both this hotel and Kolkata
We were booked here for an official stay. The hotel is aptly named Grand, and lives up to its reputation. Rooms spacious, comfy beds, excellent staff and a good spread at breakfast as well as the lunch buffet.
My first visit to an Oberoi Hotel.
Breathtaking. Superb food, outstanding service. Customer service second to none and by far the best hotel I have stayed in.
