Set in lush grounds overlooking the city’s largest park and the Victoria Memorial, this luxe retreat is located in Kolkata’s affluent Alipore neighborhood. There’s no escaping the opulence on arrival: The towering five-story atrium is dotted with traditional and modern Indian artworks, antiques and ancient terra-cotta reliefs. The elegant interiors are courtesy of US-based master architect Bob Fox.
Bed & Bath
While the 229 guestrooms are not overly spacious (Deluxe Rooms start at 260 square feet), there are plenty of plush features to ensure a comfortable stay (sumptuous cushions, armchairs and a handy work area.) The fifth-floor Club Rooms feature delightful bay windows overlooking the city and the Suites have a palatial feel with large living areas and butler service. The bathrooms all feature tubs and showers, and Forest Essential products.
The dining options are extensive and cover Mediterranean, Chinese and traditional Indian and Bengali cuisines. Outside, The Hub is a casual bistro and buffet by the pool while The Chambers restaurant is a fancy fine dining spot that serves international dishes. In all there are nine food venues catering to international and exotic tastes. The Signature Taj Spa offers traditional Indian aromatherapy massages and treatments, body scrubs and wraps, and there’s a huge gym next door.
In the Area
The Taj Bengal’s convenient central location means that it’s an easy stroll to nearby attractions like the Victoria Memorial, the Royal Calcutta Race Course, the Horticulture Gardens, the National Library and the Zoological Gardens. Beyond that, the fascinating and historic city of Kolkata can be explored at leisure by taxi or a with dedicated driver and guide. Shopping is a key feature in the city with a mind-boggling range of Kantha embroidery, terra-cotta urns and figurines, fine silk and cotton saris, ‘Kalighat’ paintings, genuine antiques, vintage furniture and original works of art. The bustling flower market at Malik Ghat, near the Howrah Bridge, is a must see.
How to Get There
An amazing stay at Taj Bengal. We were pleasantly surprised upon checkin as we were upgraded (in true Taj style) to the Club Room. The room was perfectly appointed, amazing toiletries as always, great views of greenery and Victoria Memorial in the distance. The staff is ever so friendly and warm, I can see myself staying for weeks without feeling lonely or unrecognized. Rajesh, from housekeeping kept our room clean and fresh (even tidied it up on the day we were checking out), wishing us every morning after we returned from breakfast always willing to help. Leonard from Cal-27 was very helpful during breakfast (he remembered our morning tea/coffee order by the 2nd day). A callout to the concierge (sorry, I don't remember his name) who helped us with a few important travel and shopping questions. There's something about the level of training of Taj's staff that will always impress me.
We checked into Lalit after our stay for a friend's wedding. While the Lalit's heritage property is beautiful (with decades old pillars still standing exposed & strong in rooms), the decor details and staff training was stark. I'll forever remain a Taj fanboy.
Seamless efficiency in a spotlessly clean and aesthetically maintained property, offering a genuinely warm, welcoming and caring environment. The food menu tickled the taste buds well during all the meals.
it is always memorable to stay with Taj. the hospitality and the services offered by Taj Bengal was awesome from the entry to exit, to add to it the ambiance ofe the hotel is fabulous. interiors of the hotel is very well planned and extremely beautiful. the food and the room service is excellent. the pool was good and loved the live flute played in the lobby in the morning. overall a memorable stay.
Proof that Bengali hospitality remains tops. Yes, some people prefer the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, but this one is now my favorite, great location, beautiful lobby, excellent breakfast and exceptional service. Airport transfer was smooth both ways. After two days, the manager would greet me by name, the duty manager Pousali Dasgupta and the concierge Bimal Darnal both followed me out as I was leaving with warm conversations continuing up until my departure. The room was very comfortably furnished, the retro tile black and white floor and the "planter's" desk and arm chair very nice touches.
Taj Bengal is a beautiful property in a central location with very good restaurants. Enjoyed a very comfortable stay with good service which always has a scope for further improvement when compared with competition.
