Set in lush grounds overlooking the city’s largest park and the Victoria Memorial, this luxe retreat is located in Kolkata’s affluent Alipore neighborhood. There’s no escaping the opulence on arrival: The towering five-story atrium is dotted with traditional and modern Indian artworks, antiques and ancient terra-cotta reliefs. The elegant interiors are courtesy of US-based master architect Bob Fox.
Bed & Bath
While the 229 guestrooms are not overly spacious (Deluxe Rooms start at 260 square feet), there are plenty of plush features to ensure a comfortable stay (sumptuous cushions, armchairs and a handy work area.) The fifth-floor Club Rooms feature delightful bay windows overlooking the city and the Suites have a palatial feel with large living areas and butler service. The bathrooms all feature tubs and showers, and Forest Essential products.
The dining options are extensive and cover Mediterranean, Chinese and traditional Indian and Bengali cuisines. Outside, The Hub is a casual bistro and buffet by the pool while The Chambers restaurant is a fancy fine dining spot that serves international dishes. In all there are nine food venues catering to international and exotic tastes. The Signature Taj Spa offers traditional Indian aromatherapy massages and treatments, body scrubs and wraps, and there’s a huge gym next door.
In the Area
The Taj Bengal’s convenient central location means that it’s an easy stroll to nearby attractions like the Victoria Memorial, the Royal Calcutta Race Course, the Horticulture Gardens, the National Library and the Zoological Gardens. Beyond that, the fascinating and historic city of Kolkata can be explored at leisure by taxi or a with dedicated driver and guide. Shopping is a key feature in the city with a mind-boggling range of Kantha embroidery, terra-cotta urns and figurines, fine silk and cotton saris, ‘Kalighat’ paintings, genuine antiques, vintage furniture and original works of art. The bustling flower market at Malik Ghat, near the Howrah Bridge, is a must see.
How to Get There
Stay was quite good and comfortable as usual. I stayed there for 2 nights. First night, I did request for soup and salad and it was served to me with a smile. The food was really amazing! I could see chef's hardwork. I would really like to appreciate the chef and also the steward( not aware of the name) who got me the meal.
I met Mr. David Aaron who was plesant and warm as ever.
Just a suggestion, the lady answering the call for IRD was quite firm, I requested for dinner at 6 in the evening (we had to checkout in the morning at 0500hrs) which wasn't possible as per her (I didn't eat neither breakfast nor lunch). She could have been a little thoughtful here. Anyways, my entire stay was very comfortable except the IRD disappointment.
My first time in Kolkata. The welcome at the Taj Bengal was warm and sincere. The hotel has a palatial feel. The rooms are very clean and spacious. Every enquiry was met with a professional and help full manner.
Some great restaurants and in particular the restaurant Sonargaon. Such helpful menu suggestions and knowledge of the cuisine.
Overall the standards of Taj hotels are held high here. The little touches are there and make a most enjoyable stay.
My room was facing away from the pool and afforded a feeling of peace and quite.
I would look forward to another stay, I’ll be back in 2020. Well done to the team and management. You have a winning formula.
I was here on business and having stayed in a few good hotels around India, this one was the best. The hotel is wonderfully luxurious, the rooms are immaculate, food is superb. Above all the friendly and helpful attitude of the staff was great.
We held a conference here inviting over 160 people to an evening reception and the facilities were excellent.
I would return to the hotel for business or holiday at any time.
Taj Bengal is really awesome. I enjoyed during my stay. I recommend everyone should stay at least one in Taj Bengal to enjoy the fantastic room, facilities, dining and its fantastic look. Food quality is too good.
You will get wonderful experience and will feel fully secure. The arrival services will give you a glimpse of Indian Culture. Interior decorations will give you glimpse of Indian History. Lot many things
