Set in lush grounds overlooking the city’s largest park and the Victoria Memorial, this luxe retreat is located in Kolkata’s affluent Alipore neighborhood. There’s no escaping the opulence on arrival: The towering five-story atrium is dotted with traditional and modern Indian artworks, antiques and ancient terra-cotta reliefs. The elegant interiors are courtesy of US-based master architect Bob Fox.
Bed & Bath
While the 229 guestrooms are not overly spacious (Deluxe Rooms start at 260 square feet), there are plenty of plush features to ensure a comfortable stay (sumptuous cushions, armchairs and a handy work area.) The fifth-floor Club Rooms feature delightful bay windows overlooking the city and the Suites have a palatial feel with large living areas and butler service. The bathrooms all feature tubs and showers, and Forest Essential products.
The dining options are extensive and cover Mediterranean, Chinese and traditional Indian and Bengali cuisines. Outside, The Hub is a casual bistro and buffet by the pool while The Chambers restaurant is a fancy fine dining spot that serves international dishes. In all there are nine food venues catering to international and exotic tastes. The Signature Taj Spa offers traditional Indian aromatherapy massages and treatments, body scrubs and wraps, and there’s a huge gym next door.
In the Area
The Taj Bengal’s convenient central location means that it’s an easy stroll to nearby attractions like the Victoria Memorial, the Royal Calcutta Race Course, the Horticulture Gardens, the National Library and the Zoological Gardens. Beyond that, the fascinating and historic city of Kolkata can be explored at leisure by taxi or a with dedicated driver and guide. Shopping is a key feature in the city with a mind-boggling range of Kantha embroidery, terra-cotta urns and figurines, fine silk and cotton saris, ‘Kalighat’ paintings, genuine antiques, vintage furniture and original works of art. The bustling flower market at Malik Ghat, near the Howrah Bridge, is a must see.
How to Get There
Nicly located . Cozy atmosphere. Taj hospitality . But rooms are disappointing. Cramped bathrooms . Compared to taj lands end bombay this is an apology. I would say not in line with taj standards . Large corridors spaciaous lobby are all not compensating. Somewhere some one missed the layout
It was an amazing experience with Taj Bengal.
Hospitality is like home care for everyone. The blooming faces of people with wide smiles and spreading happiness around makes you feel like you’re at home not in hotel. Staff is so helpful and thoughtful of your time. You’re just a family member rather than ordinary guest . Dining experience is good and can’t express it with my words . You’ll cherish it every time . Staying here makes me addicted to this place and I cannot resist myself saying that I love this place.
Whenever coming this place do meet Mr David Aaron , because he’s the key to everything.
Thank you for everything Taj Bengal .
Tad late, but nevertheless, this is my write up for the wonderful experience at the Taj Bengal, Kolkata.
Right from waking up to the soothing strains of the flute at the lobby level in the mornings to enjoying a very delectable spread for breakfast to sipping on masala chai and savoring Jhalmuri towards the evening, The Taj Bengal in Kolkata has undoubtedly been able to create a very relaxed and soothing experience for their guests.
Located in the seemingly quiet area of Alipore, yet very close to prominent business districts & landmarks in Kolkata. The Taj Bengal is cozy, comfortable & charming. Their guest rooms are spacious, comfortable & have all the modern day amenities one can ask for. The food & beverage outlets offer local fare (Sonar Gaon), Oriental (Chinoserie) & Coffee Shop (Cal 27).
Something beyond all this, the one factor that makes the Taj group stand out in the hospitality industry is their high level of committed guest service by their staff. Warm, welcoming & "Wowful". Right from the way you are greeted by the security at the entrance to the way your check in is taken care of at the reception to the staff at their food & beverage outlets makes one feel welcome & gives a positive vibe about the surroundings you are in.
Taj Bengal wasn't an exception to this, the staff here were totally forthcoming, warm & kept a check on our comfort level & never shied away from any requests. The most wonderful surprise was when they organized a cake to celebrate the birthday of one of the family members & the way they had decked up the room with balloons on our arrival. Indeed a very very sweet gesture from them. While all the staff were very helpful & welcoming, I must mention here few of them who made our stay even more memorable, Smriti Mohandas from the front office at the time of check in, made sure the room was the way we had asked for. Anamika from Cal 27 for being so helpful for our breakfast requests & the Concierge- Mr. Sanjib Ghosh for the lovely surprise cake & the little celebration in our room.
Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts, we indeed had a unforgettable experience & surely look forward to the experiencing the same level of service & hospitality for our next stays with the Taj Group!
