It’s full steam ahead as you arrive at the island of Vulcano, where white plumes of smoke rise from dramatic peaks. Named after the ancient Roman god of fire, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and celebrated for its therapeutic mud baths and hot springs. Below its iconic crater, just behind a famous black sand beach, Mari del Sud Resort is perfectly positioned for enjoying the many natural wonders this colorful gem of an island has to offer.
The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence-winning resort is set in fragrant gardens teeming with native plants, like yucca, eucalyptus, rosemary and bougainvillea. It’s recently been refurbished and the overall design pays homage to local traditions. A collection of low-rise, whitewashed stone buildings feature distinctive built-in seating, hand-painted ceramic tiles and thatched pergolas. You’ll be gorging on scrumptious breakfasts and super-fresh seafood in the restaurant, and elsewhere there’s a large, beautiful swimming pool, with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas to go around.
The Mediterranean-style Double rooms are painted bright white and make ample use of local glazed painted tiles. Handmade accessories, like lamp bases made from pebbles and driftwood, further add to their character.
Open for lunch and dinner, Baia di Ponente restaurant offers fresh fish, Sicilian specials and wood-fired pizzas. There’s also a romantic rooftop terrace where you can take in the stunning sunsets over a cocktail or two.
The resort is ideally located behind the black sand beach on Porto Ponente Bay, near all the island’s main attractions. You can take a boat tour from Levante Port via the shuttle service available from the hotel, and explore fumaroles, hot springs and the Cave of the Horse, which is filled with amazing natural light displays. A hike up to the lunar-like volcanic caldera is an unforgettable experience, and you’ll be rewarded with out-of-this-world views.
How to Get There
We enjoyed 2 nights at this hotel. It’s in an amazingly convenient location, just a short courtesy bus ride from the port, which is an easy walk without luggage. Easy walk to climb the Vulcano which is a must; right on the black sand beach and close enough to walk to the mud baths if you feel so inclined! The resort is well laid out although feels a bit lacking in investment in places. Our room was better than expected with a lovely terrace, only let down by the lack of shampoo etc. Breakfast was ok but don’t get to excited and dinner whilst ok at the hotel served in a great location by the sea is best taken at the amazing Malvasia Restaurant just across the road.
Beautiful and calm resort at the seaside, where we stayed one week. Spacious rooms, giving a fresh feeling because of the Sicilian tiles. A terrace at each room is looking out over a luscious garden in the direction of the sea. A nice swimming pool with background music. At the spa you can have a nice massage. The personnel is always smiling, kind and helpful. The restaurant has a good breakfast, but lacks some choice at lunch and dinner. The centre of the village is at a 10 minute walk where there is a good choice of restaurants and pizzerias.
mari del sud is a fantastic place.the resort is pretty close to the port and the small village (just 5 minutes walking). the rooms are located only in different one floor buildings n are luxury and big. they have an amazing swimming pool, excellent massage / top quality food / possibility to use bicycle etc
We just came back from this resort where we spend the most relaxing and beautiful 10 days.
Location: excellent , near beaches and amenities
Staff: very professional, friendly and going out of their way to make your stay pleasant
Entertainment: could do maybe more both for kids and adults in the evening
Spa: we had four massages while we where there, Lea has healing hands
Rooms: very spacious, clean, bright and perfect size for a family of four
Food: this is the only critic we have, considering you are in Sicily you would expect a bigger and fresher range of fruit and veg, frozen fish is a disappointment considering you are like literally located 2m from the sea, also there should be more variety. We ate dinner twice at the restaurant and we ate twice at the bbq, both need improvement, it just doesn't do any justice to the rest of the resort. Pizza is great.
We believe the hotel looses here big time on revenue because most of the guests we spoke to, including ourselves ended up eating in the restaurants nearby which are by the way fantastic and serve the quality of food you would except, it doesn't need to be fancy just fresh, local and authentic.
Pool area and beaches: excellent pool area, kept very clean and the beaches (sand and rocky) are just few meters away.
Very convenient and pleasant location with a nice garden and a good pool, also close to the best beach on the island.
Rooms are spacious and simple, yet very tasteful.
Service is very kind and helpful, except for a few improvements needed at the BBQ station next to the pool. The concierge was particularly good.
Breakfast could do with more variety and better quality.
