It’s full steam ahead as you arrive at the island of Vulcano, where white plumes of smoke rise from dramatic peaks. Named after the ancient Roman god of fire, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and celebrated for its therapeutic mud baths and hot springs. Below its iconic crater, just behind a famous black sand beach, Mari del Sud Resort is perfectly positioned for enjoying the many natural wonders this colorful gem of an island has to offer.
The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence-winning resort is set in fragrant gardens teeming with native plants, like yucca, eucalyptus, rosemary and bougainvillea. It’s recently been refurbished and the overall design pays homage to local traditions. A collection of low-rise, whitewashed stone buildings feature distinctive built-in seating, hand-painted ceramic tiles and thatched pergolas. You’ll be gorging on scrumptious breakfasts and super-fresh seafood in the restaurant, and elsewhere there’s a large, beautiful swimming pool, with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas to go around.
The Mediterranean-style Double rooms are painted bright white and make ample use of local glazed painted tiles. Handmade accessories, like lamp bases made from pebbles and driftwood, further add to their character.
Open for lunch and dinner, Baia di Ponente restaurant offers fresh fish, Sicilian specials and wood-fired pizzas. There’s also a romantic rooftop terrace where you can take in the stunning sunsets over a cocktail or two.
The resort is ideally located behind the black sand beach on Porto Ponente Bay, near all the island’s main attractions. You can take a boat tour from Levante Port via the shuttle service available from the hotel, and explore fumaroles, hot springs and the Cave of the Horse, which is filled with amazing natural light displays. A hike up to the lunar-like volcanic caldera is an unforgettable experience, and you’ll be rewarded with out-of-this-world views.
How to Get There
Although this report has nice rooms, and beautiful views, we were left with a sour feeling from how we were treated.
We were not the only customers during our stay who were charged for drinks that we understood to be covered by a (so called) 'free drink voucher' handed out during check in. Whats more in our case we were also charged for a bottle of wine that we did not have, and were also charged a greater amount than was listed on their menu for pizzas and other drinks. When we raised this overcharge with the staff, they repeatedly refused to acknowledge the error, and refused our request to provide any refund.
Since we are aware that at least two other couples had similar problems, this can only be either wide incompetence in staff record keeping, or a deliberate policy intended towards charging customers more. We feel both angry and sad about this. It is also the first time from many reviews I've felt the need for such a negative review.
Super resort at Vulcano close to wonderful black beaches. Hotel is splendid for family or couples wanting to explore the Aeolian Islands. Excellent, clean rooms with own terrasse - ours had view to the Vulcano mountain. The pool is most charming and the restaurant at the beach side, is a perfect place for a good start of the day or a relaxing evening.
Staff at Mari del Sud very friendly: Cristina most service minded and doing a good job. Rossano always helpful at the reception. And Melo the most kind and friendly driver, you can imagine.
In short, Mari del Sud is a perfect place for a water activities, hiking or other adventures, i.e. visits to Stromboli, Panarea, Lipari etc.
We booked the Mari del Sud resort by accident, not realising it was on an island off the coast of Sicily! However, it was the best mistake we ever made. We went in June so the whole island was relatively quiet .. there were always free sunbeds by the pool (no 6am rush to place your towel), and it was very peaceful. I informed the hotel of which ferry we were taking to the island and they sent someone to collect us from the port (free of charge). The rooms were beautiful, each with their own terrace, but the only down side was the WiFi signal - only really available at the pool. The staff were really friendly and helpful, but some don’t speak much English (it seemed to be a place where Italians go on holiday).
I would definitely recommend anyone to go to this hotel, if you want a relaxing holiday on a beautiful, quiet island. However... make sure you take mosquito spray - the place is full of them!
