How to Get There
We visited Grand Lucayan for a friend's wedding and had an unbelievable time. The resort and beach were gorgeous. The people were friendly and welcoming and Port Lucaya across the street is a great place to find a lot of different food, shops, etc.
We had the all inclusive package, Breakfast great- Lunch- great plenty of options. We did not like the buffet. We preferred the food at the Capri restaurant- I would suggest making reservations. Staff is very friendly. Our room was spacious and clean. The staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. I was waiting for a pass to use the boats- and there was a long line at the check in desk. The person at the desk called over to the excursion desk and had the staff member get the book and write up my ticket. We walked around the market and around the town and felt safe. The roads are clean. The taxis have a fixed rate- so you can jump in any of them and the 10 minute trip to the airport is $22.00---$25. with tip. The lap pool is not heated as advertised and the infinity pool is COLD. The view beautiful.
We arrived in Freeport on a cruise. We caught a 20 minute taxi to the resort. Our driver was nice enough to drop us at the resort instead of the nearby shopping market. We bought the day pass with unlimited drinks and food. The infinity pool was absolutely beautiful. It was cold, but its February so I wasnt shocked. Nancy was an amazing server. The waves were rough so we didn't swim but the beach was beautiful. I loved this resort so much!!
A fantastic trip started with the cheerful and accommodating Jacquelyn Harvey at the front desk. The weather was chilly while we were there, the hot tub was a fantastic way to be outside while it was too cold to be in the pool or ocean. Nyoka provided wonderful service, suggesting drinks we would enjoy. Carvel took great care of the grounds and pool. We also enjoyed an island experience of getting our hair braided and souvenirs to take home from Netty and Marcy. KJ played great tunes poolside, meditative music in the morning and enjoyable party music later in the day. The food was delicious, favorites including conch pizza and sweet potato conch soup. To address some of the other reviews, part of the resort is still closed from the hurricane, including the pool shown on the trip advisor cover... but the infinity pool at lighthouse point is even more beautiful. The Beaches are beautiful and you can walk forever along turquoise water and clean white sand. There were not many people staying but it was nice to not have to try to save beach chairs etc. We did wish they had some nightly entertainment, but perhaps they do at other times of the year. We did not like having to sign a slip for every meal, drink or bottle of water. ...Our room was a little musty, but they had a dehumidifier in the room so it didn't bother us much. We spent very little time in the room anyway. The grounds were much too beautiful to not take advantage of every moment. All in all, Freeport is an area still affected by hurricanes, there are run down areas, but the people are some of the nicest I've ever known and there's a draw to the island that leaves me searching for another deal to bring me back, as I'm waiting for the plane home.
Hate to say it but this beautiful circular pool in the photo has been closed 2 1/2 years since the damaging 2016 Hurricane season, and the big hotel behind it is also closed. Parts of the property (the low profile beachfront buildings to the north) are open and running, and there is another set of very nice pools closer to the channel, the restaurants and beach bars are open close to the Lighthouse end, but this big pool in front of what was formerly called Grand Lucayan is still awaiting repairs and so is the large hotel and casino complex. They are working on getting this all repaired and open again, and the government is now involved. So you can have a great beach vacation, but not this pool.
