An intimate resort geared toward honeymooners and other travelers in the mood for romance (but also catering to families), Sala Samui has just 69 rooms, of which 53 are freestanding villas with private pools. The staff emphasizes privacy and personalized service, and romantic dinners for two or barbecues can be arranged on the beach or in guests’ villas. Thai and international chefs prepare meals in a variety of laid-back restaurants overlooking the 80-meter white-sand beach, ranging from the Thai favorites at the Beach Restaurant to Mediterranean delights at Pangaea, while a beachfront wine cellar houses an array of bottles from around the world. The spa, redolent with the scent of therapeutic flowers and spices, has four air-conditioned couples treatment rooms and four open-air salas (pavilions) that appear to float on a lotus pond.
In the Area
The island of Koh Samui, or Samui as locals and regular visitors call it, has a history that spans more than 325 years. It was discovered by backpackers several decades ago, but since the 1990s it’s come into its own as a sophisticated enclave of excellent spas, dining, and nightlife. The Big Buddha Temple is its most famous landmark, and the 12-meter-high golden deity is visited by devout locals as well as tourists. The hotel can also arrange private long-tail boat tours to the Five Islands to see caves, beaches, and bamboo houses perched on high limestone cliffs, on islands that were until recently completely inaccessible to foreigners.
How to Get There
Had 5 wonderful night stay at Sala! Great location and superb resort and accommodation. Had the one bedroom pool villa, comfortable for family of four. Kids loved the plunge pool. Resort pool were exquisite! Spent a lot of time there and pool/bar staff were attentive to our needs. Resort spa was also fantastic for massages etc. Much better than those offered in town. Small village town, beach was pristine and quiet. Wonderful time of year to go and will be back!!
4 star bits - We stayed for a week in a Sala Pool Villa late June. The resort is very clean and tidy and well tended. The room was a disappointment, looking a little tired, hardly any handing space (luckily left 2 bags in Bangkok), no long dress space and only a couple of drawers. Outside bathroom was nice ish but again had seen better days and was getting tatty. We had just left the Banyan Tree in Bangkok so it took my husband 3 hours to calm down and stop moaning about what a 5* should be, happy days! Pool area nice, covered day bed and 2 loungers. Communal areas and beach plenty of loungers. 2 good pools. Beach looked great for 3 days and then low tide.... not something you see in the brochures, the beach then looked a complete dump, felt really sorry for people who had just arrived as it was the same for the next 4 days we were there, brown rock pools, hideous site.
5 star bits - food!!! OMG absolutely fantastic, every meal! We were on half board, great choice, great quality absolutely outstanding as was the service - Aommy deserves a special mention she was great. There was a film on the beach twice a week which was nice, a Thai show and fire act, beach barbecue - all excellent. There was another restaurant on site just near the gate - Italian, limited menu but excellent food and service.
We stayed at SALA for 5 nights in a pool villa and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The pool villa and resort itself was exactly what we wanted - a place that we could stay and not leave if we didn’t want to.
The biggest breakfast with A La Carte options was sensational and the service throughout the entire resort was fantastic. The restaurant and pool bar were great for both lunch and dinner, and plenty of good authentic restaurants just outside of the resort within walking distance.
If we ever come back to Koh Samui, SALA Choengmon Beach will be our first option. Highly recommended for a relaxing stay!
We stayed at the Sala Samui for 5 nights and had a fantastic experience. The resort is spotless and the service was incredible. The breakfast was delicious and the hotel staff excelled at making our stay unforgettable. Thank you!
Amazing value and excellent facilities. I wish I can transplant the resort to a better beach!
Room: We stayed in a pool villa, and the room was immaculate, beautifully decorated in a modern, classy and airy way. The villa offered privacy and our room here at Sala was the best room we had in our two week stay in Thailand.
Service: I thoroughly enjoyed the service that they provided, their hospitality was subtle in a good way. The thoughtful details such as nuts, dried fruits in the room, turn down service with iced tea, a note from the chef at night, free water while in the pool, fruits being passed while lounging in the pool, really made the resort standout. The service provided by the staff mirrored the simple elegant aesthetics of the resort. I much prefer the understated way they provided service, it made the excellent service everyone provided seem expected and routine, not for show.
Amenities: The resort had beautiful and well maintained grounds, with two amazing pools. Only minor gripe was that the black lap pool was supposed to be adults only, but kids were allowed in the pool during my stay. The kids were not disruptive so I did not make an issue out of it, but it would have been nice if this adults only policy was enforced. The white pool was beside the restaurant, so it made swimming in it during breakfast and lunch a little awkward as there are tables literally beside the pool.
Beach: The only subpar part about this experience. Maybe I had too high of an expectation, maybe I'm comparing the beaches in Thailand to the beaches in Hawaii. However personally, the beach was lackluster. There is a slight sheen on the water, and the sand is sometimes silty and discolored after a rain storm. The water was very calm, and sand white and soft, however I preferred to swim in the pool than the beach. And that was unfortunate as I was really looking forward to enjoying the beach.
Overall: I would love to come back to this resort again, and I would not hesitate to visit any Sala properties in Thailand.
