How to Get There
I had a 9-day long solo trip here in September to relax and rejuvenate before starting a new job.
I highly recommend this place - the day spa is excellent, the staff are welcoming and accommodating, the grounds are well maintained with a great pool area. Lots of food options for everyone, lovely fresh ingredients. I stayed in the most basic room accommodation and it was still very large and comfortable with a bath, air con and it's own balcony. Would definitely return.
We came back for our 1-year anniversary and my wife's birthday. Booked the Ocean View Pool Villa as last time and turned out to receive the same room # as before x] Same view but with the nature having massively grown more since last time. We were very surprised and thankful to the staff of Amatara for going beyond to wish my wife a happy birthday with a hand written card and birthday cake(s). The friendliness was very much appreciated, making us feel closer to the staff, in turn, making our stay at Amatar very pleasant without worry or concern. Truly, we were able to relax and smile during our entire stay. The Amatara Signature Spa is really the best we've had even when compared to expensive resorts in Maldives. I'm glad I was stubborn and convinced my wife to come back to Amatara :P
As this is my second review of Amatara, there are some things to note for other guests coming for things to expect:
- Cape Panwa is truly quiet and refreshing, away from the noise and bustle of the city.
- No movies in room (as of this review), which would have been nice for us late night owls.
- Their sales is not as 'active'? As we found out about more interesting packages/promotions such as a Catamaran trip out to islands for those staying 3 nights. if we knew in advance, we would have decided to stay full 4 nights instead of booking a separate island tour via Klook, which really didn't turn out to be great and we came to Amatara with strained backs and necks from sitting in the 1hr+ long car trip & 1hr+ boat rides out. Speed boat crammed full of tourists vs a Catamaran trip from resort is not a competition.
-Spa. Do it daily (if you can afford to ofc). It's really the best thing at Amatara. Then follow up further relaxation at the pool, library lounge or at the Retreat.
- Big 7-11 convenience store a little down the road outside the entrance. Evening visit for ice cream, snacks and alcohol to bring back to room (hence the small fridge in room isn't really an issue if you're buying supplies every evening to enjoy in room x])
- Further walking abit down is Panwa Pier with a row of restaurants and stalls (at night).
- Visit Cafe Kantary for really nice desserts & coffee. Highly recommended also by reception.
- Currency exchange stall is also there where we saw same rates as in Patong.
- For fresh sea food however, it was recommended and found that it is better back over in Patong tho.
- The Grill's menu is wonderful and dining there has always been a treat.
MOSTLY PROS.. ONLY A FEW MINOR CONS..
From the moment we arrived to the Amatara we were treated like royalty. We arranged for the hotel transportation to/from the airport. We had to clear customs and go through baggage claim, and the driver was there patiently waiting for us. The ride to the hotel was 1 hour long (from the airport), however, the driver made us feel like royalty from the moment we stepped into the shuttle van. We had cool drinks and other "creature comforts" to prepare for our lengthy journey to the resort. We arrived exhausted and it was almost 9:30pm - however, the staff did not miss a beat. We were given a quick overview of the resort and mini "tour" of our suite (we had the Ocean View Pool Villa with the Privilege Club). It was a lot to learn because the suite was so spacious and beautiful. Each time I contacted the front desk with a question, concern or need... it was answered promptly and our needs were met quickly. Another thing worth mentioning.. they actually did our laundry DAILY as a complimentary service... which was limited to 8 pieces per day, but I think that was more than generous!! (I'm not sure if this was a benefit of the Privilege Club so you may want to check on that prior to booking). The resort is huge so you must call for a "buggy" to get to the various restaurants and other activities. The buggy system is VERY EFFICIENT. I never waited more than 3 minutes for a buggy to arrive to take us to where we wanted to go. It was a VERY ORGANIZED service. I visited the spa several times during my visit and enjoyed the spa treatments I received. The spa technicians were very courteous and provided great service. As far as the food... I can't say enough about how EXCELLENT the food was. I'm not much of a "foody"... but my husband is definitely a "foody". The breakfast buffet was amazing (which is what we did each morning of our stay). The restaurant next to the pool had the most AMAZING food. It was an EXPERIENCE as well... full of surprises while you ate (I won't spoil the surprises by telling what it is... lol). We enjoyed the beautiful rooftop bar where we received complimentary drinks every evening (again... this may be a Privilege Club perk.. so be sure to check on this). The rest of the time, we were simply relaxed and were able to catch up on ZZZ's.
Ok now I must report the CONS.. which were not too bad. But worth mentioning.
Due to the weather and being on the ocean... Our suite would get VERY VERY humid. So much so, there would be a layer of mist or moisture on almost everything in the room. I had to make sure I closed my suitcase each night or covered my clothing with a towel to prevent it from feeling "damp". You could counter this by having the AC on a colder setting .. but I do not like it cold in the room so that posed a problem for me. Again.. very minor.. but worth mentioning.
Next CON... I would find small ANTS in the bed area. On the nightstands... in the bed.. on the pillow. There was also a roach crawling in my suitcase at one time ... and a small lizard or two got inside the room (on the ceiling). I did not call the hotel staff to come find it - and I never saw it again after it disappeared somewhere in the ceiling planks. Now this wasn't a common occurrence.. however, I did see about 3 total. There is a lot of greenery outside and tons of foliage. I'm sure that beautiful view comes with the price of bugs on occasion. (The resort provides insect repellent for mosquitos). The good thing was: I was not bitten by any mosquitos and did not notice many of them in the room. I'm from FLORIDA (USA) and bugs are something we must get use to seeing as we are surrounded by water and moisture. The hotel seems to have it under good control and as mentioned earlier, it was not a common occurrence.
Overall, I must say this was an AMAZING place... and I booked it at the last minute after reading a bad review about the hotel I was going to stay (Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort). Thankfully I read the review of the other hotel from a guest who had just checked into the hotel and was being treated poorly ... and stated the hotel did not look like the pictures. So I got scared and booked the AMATARA immediately.. I AM SOOOO GLAD I DID!!! Cant wait to stay at the AMATARA again!!
