The Review

On Panama’s Pacific coast, a short flight from Panama City, Seagullcove Lodge is on a hillside overlooking one of the hundreds of coves that define this stretch of Panama’s Chiriqui province. And since there are just five bungalows, you can enjoy all of it in privacy — or find yourself thinking of the charming staff and managers as your Panamanian family.

Built by an Italian architect, the five bungalows are like personal aeries for watching all the yachting and water sports activities on the bay below. It’s quite a backdrop, so the spacious rooms are smart but simple spaces, painted in tropical colors with luxe linens and bright throws, air conditioning and private balconies or terraces. {“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2900/prop-33498-1338313787-full.jpeg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Boca Chica is growing in popularity for its unrivaled bird watching and deep-sea fishing.”}The wooden furniture is all made by local craftspeople using regional hardwoods — a natural, elegant look that highlights the lodge’s connections to its surroundings.

A series of steep steps lead from the bungalows down to the dark sand beach (better for walks than lounging) and the raft of outdoor activities found along Chiriqui’s gulf coast. For nature lovers there’s whale watching in the bay and unrivaled birdwatching, while sporty types can try sea kayaking and diving or snorkeling adventures at nearby reefs. Relaxation seekers can book boat rides to neighboring, uninhabited inlets, or simply lounge in a hammock in the tiki-style overwater bar.

Like the rest of the lodge, the restaurant looks to Italy for inspiration. Aside from the fresh seafood, some of Panama’s best beef is raised just inland from the lodge; the meltingly tender beef boscaiola is not to be missed. Seagullcove Lodge attracts a well-traveled clientele with stories to tell over cognac and cigars at the tiled bar. And, lest you forget the lodge’s remote setting in this little-explore patch of Panama, the odd howler monkey and the low rumble of night boats trolling through the bay will provide a gentle soundtrack .

Small resort, five very comfortable bungalows all with a wonderful view over the cove. Very friendly staff. Great food. Kayaks available to paddle in the safe waters. Bit of a climb up from the beach area, but with the thought of a cold beer at the top makes it worth it.

Seagull Cove is an intimate resort with only 6 casitas. The owners, Jim and Sue, who made the big move for love of this special part of the coast called Boca Chica, are wonderful and make your stay extra special. The rooms were roomy and beautifully appointed. The attention to detail is well thought out. Each morning we sat looking out at the blue coastal waters from the hillside restaurant and had a wonderful breakfast surrounded by tropical birds and flora. The waters are clear and warm. We kayaked, swam and enjoyed the wonderful drinks and food prepared by the very friendly staff. On Saturday nights you can mingle with the locals at the Tiki Bar which gives you an inside look at the local ex-pat community that has embraced this gem of Panama. If you want a place off the beaten path and ready to relax and rejuvenate this is the place. We will be back.

Restaurant has an amazing view over the Boca chica bay. With look you can spot animals like humming birds or parrots. The food is very delicious. We were there every evening to eat. Drinks like mojito are also very delicious.

stayed here for some off shore fishing for my adult son and I. Very well run and cute little place, clean. friendly owners and well kept. Filtered water throughout and nice restaurant/bar overlooking the bay, reasonably priced and helpful friendly staff. Maid service daily with small but clean units with nice bay views and nice little AC unit.
