How to Get There
My partner and I have just returned home from a lovely two weeks holiday at the Cape Verde resort hotel Riu Karamboa. It is our second visit to the hotel, so I thought I’d write my honest review on the hotel for anyone thinking of visiting Cape Verde.
We have now stayed in a both a double room and suite at the hotel. Rooms are kept very clean and maids would provide us with fresh towels and water daily. Rooms do have dark traditional decor, some might say a little dated however we still found it very comfortable. We did have a faulty remote on arrival, but reception sent someone straight away and it was replaced. For any ladies with long hair reading, the hairdryer in our room wasn’t very powerful so it may be worth bringing a travel dryer along with you.
I recommend any staying at the hotel to book the speciality restaurants for dinner during your stay. The main restaurant would sometimes get very busy and did tend to be a little repetitive, therefore it’s definitely worth booking the speciality restaurants that have seating slots of 7pm or 9pm and we’re not as busy. Hand sanitiser is provided on the door of the restaurants as they are all buffet style.
The hotel has a fantastic pool bar, perfect for swim up drinks and the bars around the hotel have great staff that do very well at remembering your order for when you come for the next round.
The pool at the Karamboa is large with areas for bar seating and water sports, 12pm aqua gym is fantastic with Mr Elastic. If you enjoy Yoga or Pilates,10:30am at the pool stage is a great way to start the day. There is lots of activities throughout the day. The entertainment team are great and have such fantastic energy that is perfect for guests.
Don’t miss the Paella Show on a Tuesday at 12pm with Tony Macaronni. Super tasty and the sangria is beautiful.
The Riu Karamboa beach is paradise, that’s it that’s all I have to say on that.
If you are looking for a great hotel, with the option of relaxed pool days or beach. With plenty of local excursions and daytime activities for guests, then the Karamboa is for you. Be mindful of the water in Cape Verde, you can rarely swim in it and definitely don’t drink it. The Karamboa if asked if it’s 5* is in the sense it has a lot to offer, but definitely has room to improve. I cannot fault any of the staff that word tirelessly to provide clean and welcome experience for all guests.
I don’t think I will return to the hotel again as there is so many other beautiful places to explore however I would definitely recommend to anyone who hasn’t already visited Cape Verde.
Sitting here on the last night of a wonderful relaxing 7 days away with 5 friends..
The hotel is immaculate although the rooms are a little dated.. The pool areas are constantly being cleared and cleaned. The restaurants are an abundance of good food to suit everyone.. The speciality restaurants are worth a visit..
The beach hotel is on the beach which is white and black sands and rolling waves as far as the eye can see.. The beaches are safe and manned by plenty of life guards and have plenty of sun beds.. The sunsets are amazing! You can walk around to he coast to Sal Rai ( a good hours walk) or you can get a cab for 10/12 euros.. It was a fab ride the way the locals travel.. Be warned that the locals will expect you to see their shop!
Staff are polite.. Fun and helpful and there is a great theatre for the evenings entertainment.. There's also a well run karaoke bar.. They respect their animals and the cats although abundant are all fed and neutered and are no trouble at all
All in all a fab.. Chilled and thoroughly enjoyable week away.. We will be back ????
This review score is based solely on the hotel. Some reviewers seem to think it’s the hotels fault the sea is choppy and the wind blows!
So. The hotel is a very short drive from the airport but isn’t under its flight path so no noise. The rooms are very dated and basic, but they are clean. The complex is vast so you’ll spend a day getting your bearings. The staff are all very pleasant and helpful and work very hard. Loads of choice in the restaurants, lots of salad/fruit items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The speciality restaurants have two sittings per evening and are definitely worth booking.
There are cats in the complex that wander around and are as happy being ignored as they are being stroked. They do not beg and all look well fed. There are dogs on the beach and again are just as happy being ignored or offered a burger.
The hotel has a few shops, one that sells snacks, drinks, postcards, a few toys and other bits and bobs, a ladies and a gents clothes shop. A swimwear shop and also a jewelry/ souvenir shop and the prices aren’t exorbitant.
You can take a stroll down to the beach where there are lots of sun loungers and you can walk to the left and pick up souvenirs there as well out of pallet made stools apart from one all were friendly and not pushy.
We took a taxi into town (€10) for a walk around but found the locals to be very pushy and annoying but if you love a haggle it’s worth a trip.
We came as a group of six and all of us would return.
