A great place to relax
Reviewed 14 hours ago

I am not sure how this hotel achieved it's 5 star status, all restaurants are buffet style, including the ones you have to book, which I personally find to be appalling of such a high star standard hotel.
The grounds although are attractive and different were not maintained to the expected high standard for example outside my room was what appeared to be a discarded ashtray complete with cigarette butts.
Although my room was attended to by housekeeping every day I don't think that the floor was washed as frequently as it should have been if at all. I tended to shower in the evenings and walk in my room bare foot it was on my final night that I happened to notice hat my feet on the bottom were no cleaner before than before my shower.

As much as I enjoyed my holiday of relaxation I am not sure I will be returning to this specific hotel in the future.

Great hotel, shame about liberators.

Just got back
Great food, atmosphere, staff and room.
Firstly thank you RIU for the room and the extra special little things at meal time, it was a very kind gesture on this special occasion.

Secondly forget about the negative reviews, yes the hotel is a little worn in places but embrace it, as it gives it character and a rustic theme.

Thirdly, my wife and her friend went next door to look at the Riu palace to enquire about staying there in the near future. They made there way to reception to the TUI reps for advice, guidance and any literature on future bookings. They were very hospitable but one noticed they had Karamboa bands on and quickly there attitude and demurer changed, in a word they felt like leper’s and were hastily ejected from the premises.
In a word...
Use a bit of customer service, professionalisms and common sense Mr and Mrs TUI representatives.

Lastly, the only disappointment was somebody might have liberated my expensive designer sunglasses around the pool bar booths when we were partying together. Shame, the day after the misdemeanour I spoke to the couple who wore them at the pool booth area, they were very uncomfortable during our conversation, yet again my faith in humanity was dented. I Should have asked you about it, but feel you had the window of opportunity to say something... but happy days, you know who you are....
The others were a great bunch and thank you for a good few sociables.

Thank you again Hotel Riu, I been all over the world and your establishment is in my top ten for customer service and satisfaction I will definitely be coming again.

2nd Visit
Reviewed 2 days ago

We returned to this hotel for a 2nd time in September. Our previous visit had been 5 years earlier. On our first visit it would have been difficult to fault it. The 2nd visit however was a very different tale. We are not fussy eaters, however some variety would have been good. The food was very bland and monotonous. We were unable to book into any of the themed restaurants until close too the end of our stay and only had the chance to book one of them.
On the up side, the entertainment team worked hard and the room was kept immaculate.
Would we return to this hotel for a 3rd visit -- NO

Just okay

Here for a week, currently 5 nights in and looking forward to getting home I'm afraid.

Don't misunderstand us, we certainly aren't stuck up, we have back packed throughout various parts of the world and experienced all levels of service and comfort. We review honestly and fairly.

Weather is fabulous, excellent winter sun destination without long haul flight times. Flight with tui was smooth, airport processing quick enough and bus to resort very quick. Hotel staff all friendly, polite and helpful.... Riu's best asset here.

Rooms are well over due an upgrade. The mattress nearly broke me, god only knows how old it is, as I type this I'm settled to sleep on the pull out sofa bed because I cannot face another night trying to sleep on warped springs. The air con just does nothing except make louder noises the higher you turn it up, complete waste of time, we are just thankful we're not here in the height of their summer.

We haven't actually bothered with the pool, it looks big and clean however it obviously needs maintenence, we can see many broken and missing tiles when we walk past. The beach area is nice, very clean, enough sunbeds, lifeguards on duty. Unfortunately red flags every day, we did venture in to the sea despite the red flags, it was quite rough but we stayed very close to shore and enjoyed cooling off.

The food is definitely quantity over quality. We really looked forward to the specialty restaurants but we're disappointed to discover they too were buffet style. There is plenty to choose from however and it is all well cooked and prepared. We both found the food to mostly be quite bland but assume its just catering to the masses. I Always get ill when I travel but I didn't here, that is a huge positive. Bars were always quick and friendly service which is a refreshing Change.

Entertainment, we don't really get involved but daytime exercise by the pool looked like it was enjoyed. Evening entertainment, whilst executed enthusiasticaly was poor.

We used the gym every day, it is small and overcrowded at typically popular times of day but was okay to get a basic workout done in.

Excursions, over priced. Not much to really see or do.

Overall.... Perfect for an easy lazy week in the sun. Would I come back? No.

Relaxing Break

Just back from visiting this beautiful place. I have travelled to many places worldwide inc several Riu hotels so have to begin by saying don’t take any notice of the ridiculous reviews nit picking over minor things. Yes, things aren’t perfect but some of the comments are borderline delusional. Rant over 😂
Positives first (followed by realistic recommendations not negatives)
Hotel is very big but beautifully laid out, less than 5 mins from airport and right on the beach. Transfer and check in was excellent and reception staff very efficient.
Rooms- spacious and very clean. Cleaned daily. Ask for one near restaurants/reception if you don’t want to walk too far.
Restaurants - Always fresh, hot and plenty of choice. Staff super hard working. If only we had that standard of service at home!
Pool - huge, clean and refreshing. Plenty of sun beds. Nice swim up area. Yes there were some missing mosaic tiles. Didn’t cause us any problems.
Beach - beautiful sands, plenty of beds. Lovely sunsets. Locals selling their wares. Not pushy at all they are just trying to make a living. A smile and a no thank you works. Sometimes they just like a chat. Red flag all week. Waves were huge and yet still (idiotic) people ignore the flags and the lifeguards and wade in. Message to them - go swim outside the guarded areas so you don’t endanger someone else’s life if you get into trouble. Sorry!
Entertainment - Animation team worked tirelessly. So enthusiastic, friendly and talented.
Negatives/Comments
Rooms - lose the beaded curtains and replace the mattresses. Mine was so badly dipped in the middle it was like sleeping in a canoe. Needed a ladder to get out. For me, personally, this is the most important feature in a hotel room.
Entertainment - whilst the animation team were fab I thought the other acts (bands) were really poor. That said you just need to go with it and enjoy. Cape Verdean ‘Grease’ so funny 😂
Hotel Shops - Staff in every one were unfriendly, disinterested and a complete contrast to everyone else who worked in the hotel. Smile for goodness sake. Looks like you’ve got the easiest job on the island !
If you want a relaxing beach holiday this is the place for you.
Do your homework before you visit and there will be no surprises.
See you next year CV.
