40th Birthday Trip with Family and Friends
Reviewed 2 days ago

We just got home from a week away in beautiful Punta Cana! We stayed in the family section at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace. The resort itself is beautiful and nicely upkept. We stayed in a family room as a family of 5 (two adults, two kids ages 8 & 9, and one infant) and it was a nice fit. The location of the room was great - bottom floor as requested and right outside of the Barcey water park. We went with our friends who are also a family of 5 with children close in ages to ours. The bar staff was attentive and friendly. The housekeeping staff was great and always quick to clean our rooms after we left for the morning. All of the pools were beautiful, clean, and the kids had a blast. The beach was gorgeous and we always managed to find chairs under the palm trees. Most staff was friendly. Biggest language barriers were at Guest Services - go figure???
Down sides: Food wasn’t great. We ate at the Buffet a lot because we were only able to get 6:3 reservations at the restaurants every night, but we never wanted to get off of the beach early enough to get ready for them! It was annoying because the reservations we did make the place wasn’t busy at all. We could have easily had our time pushed back to 7/7:30 without issue yet they said we couldn’t. Out of 8 of us 3/4 of us had stomach issues through the week. It happens though - not the biggest deal. Things I didn’t like - it’s a Caribbean island and get the only music playing through the entire hotel was classical Christmas music. I get in the lobby maybe, but when I’m at the pool play some upbeat music! Steel drums or something?!! There was only one bar in the pool
Areas that had music. And it wasn’t very loud. You had to be right there to hear it.
No wait staff at the pools or beach. Get your own drinks. Again, not a huge deal but I’m on vacation and I paid a lot of money - i’d like to be given the choice of getting up and walking to the bar myself or being brought a drink and give a tip! No food available or allowed at the pool
Or beach. Kind of annoying that you have to get up and get dressed to go grab lunch. I’d like just to grab a sandwich or burger and eat by the water!
Just some things I’ve enjoyed at other resorts and think Barcelo could use here.

Great views and awesome bartenders!

Grounds were well kept. Maintenance staff was iffy - called 3 times about the refrigerator not working, and finally had to go to the Front Desk. Room was okay, but we weren't in there much - could have used a good cleaning. Food (buffet) was okay - fairly good variety, but "hot" food was rarely at proper temperature; and service staff (clearing tables, resetting silver and glass ware, etc) were just adequate. Kudos to the bartenders - always friendly and smiling, taught us a local phrase (k lo k, wa, wa, wa!).

No FREE Wifi, horrible food, poor customer service

Overall the resort is catered to Eastern Europeans - definitely not North Americans. Even all of the signage is in Russian!

It’s not ALL inclusive. There are many aspects that require additional payment. They have a Pirate water park which was really lame and that was $11 per person. Most of all, kids under about 7 years won’t make the height requirement for the slides. Don’t bother spending your money here! The French restaurant is $30 USD per person. A lot of the water sports are fee per use. The excursions are super expensive at about $114 per person. I don’t expect them to be free but those prices were a little steep.

Customer service is awful. One of the managers there was just so rude. His first name is Daniel - didn’t get his last name; Short guy who’s bursting out of his clothes. He’s the manager at the front desk in the evenings. He shrugged his shoulders and just said “nothing I can do” when we complained about the first room that we were assigned which was on the golf course - about a 12 min walk with kids to anything family oriented and to the restaurants. The resort staff barely speak English or even make an attempt. They’ll just respond in Spanish. Compared to much of the other Caribbean places, I found the staff here to almost be snooty. I found they didn’t even try working for a tip, except at the Japanese restaurant where they’ll ask outright before service starts.

NO FREE WIFI. In 2018 this is just unheard off in a 4.5 Star all inclusive. They claim Internet is the most expensive in the Dominican Republic. We had to spend $120 USD on wifi and it was the worst kind where you could only use ONE device at a time. It was just awful. I’d be happy if the $120 I spent to buy two WiFi passes could be shared simultaneously. They also don’t tell you about the device restriction up front. You find out after the purchase. No refunds.
They have a free WiFi zone right In front of the casino but the problem with that is that area is full of smokers. Limited seating. Limited hours for free WiFi. Too many restrictions for WiFi.

The food was horrendous. If you like good food, this is not the place to go. It’s bland and just lacking on every level. We ate at almost all of the a la carte restaurants and sadly the buffet too and it was gross. I lost weight while here! It’s largely catered to the Eastern European crowd.

The beach was stunning. The best beach I’ve been too. Water was clear with white sands.

The room was nice - family suite. It definitely was comfortable. The shower heads did a slightly better job than someone spitting on your head. The water gets dangerously hot!! Have to supervise kids when the taps are running because the slightest move makes it boiling hot.

The nightly entertainment was late - most often at 10 pm. If you have kids, this is a little late. Been to many places and this resort is severely lacking. The kids show was nothing short of sad and boring. The staff putting on the show put on forced effort. The Barcy club was alright - the only customer friendly staff on the resort! The theatre itself was lovely with that Dominican breeze but other than going there for a drink, nothing more to enjoy there.

I certainly won’t return to this resort or any other Barcelo’s

Total relaxation- all included

This is our fourth visit to this resort. We love it for many reasons.
1) It’s a modern, beautifully designed, gleamingly clean property. So many comfortable seating areas with a view. Fountains, pools, garden.
2) The buffets are varied, tasty, high quality and great for vegans too!
3) The beach has soft, fine sand. It is spotlessly maintained. You will always find a beach lounge here, even in the shade!
4) The rooms have every amenity, and balcony. Decent tv.
5) The place is big enough that an after dinner stroll is lovely. The common areas are beautifully appointed.
6) Friendly, attentive service

For those who like to keep busy, there’s a good gym, tennis courts with a skilled pro, golf, sailing, kayak and diverse fitness activities.

Convenient flights. Go from winter to summer in just over 4 hours! A short drive from the airport.

Great rooms with a view

The rooms are awesome, the sights are great, the pool is fabulous. The food however was never hot in the buffet, not even warm, its ashamed. The complex did make up for most of the inadequacies of the food. If you go make sure you make reservations to eat at Hoyo 19 as the food there was outstanding.
