2nd trip to the Shanghai La Rasa Sayang
Reviewed 2 days ago

We stayed here last year and enjoyed it so much that we returned again this year.
Nick the Resident Manager was very welcoming and accomodating. My wife and I had each day massages with Zhackie who was excellent as well as very informative on traditional and natural remedies for ailments.
Latchu who we met last year and again this year was very thoughtful and was always willing to play table tennis with our daughter last year. We thought that he would be poolside this year but he is now working in the health centre but we did catch up with him. His smiling face was very nice to see.
Generally speaking all staff at the Shangri La are very friendly and willing to assist if needed. They have all made our stay once again very memorable and will more than likely come back again next year.
Well done to all that work at the resort.

South East Asia's Best

As a return visitor to Penang and a frequent visitor to South East Asia, I can unreservedly say the Rasa Sayang is faultless. I stayed in a Seaview Deluxe room in the Garden Wing and even though I am used to high end accommodation resorts, this is next level around any parameters. I strongly recommend you spend the few extra Ringgit and guarantee yourself life long memories. If the food, views, rooms, pool and service don't convince you, the approximately 280 year old rain forest trees that dominate the landscape will certainly do so. The staff from grounds keepers to concierge are exceptionally accommodating. Any superlatives are destined to be understatements...

Shangri-la heaven.

Came to Penang for a fly and flop holiday session with friends, found the Shangri-la to be a fantastic location which fit the bill to a tee. We stayed in the Rasa wing. Had a fantastic sea view. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive (especially at the cocktail hour). Thanks to all for a great stay.

After having visited Penang years ago we went on a trip down memory lane. The Rasa Sayang is the best of the hotels on Batu Ferringhi so we gave it a shot. The hotel itself is kept in a good state of repair and the room was very comfortable and clean. The staff are lovely too. When ate at the hotel food was good and plenty of choices for the buffet breakfast. However, with the mainland of Malaysia now well within an easy drive we found most things geared now to the chinese style of things. They're not aware of other peoples notion of personal space or requirement for a relaxing atmosphere. The pool was too small for the number of hotel guests as is the dining facility. On our last day we had to queue for nearly 30 mins to get a table for breakfast. The beaches are no longer pristine white sandy swathes of relaxation. Take a walk along the shore and every other hotel on that strertch now has a row of tacky little gazebos offering massages etc between the hotels and the sea....and the people running them come out and start yelling to try and get your busuness. After only 5 mins we turned and went back to our room, only to have the same hawkers asking for business again after having just been told no. The night market was great, apart from being badgered by yet more offers of massages, and we haggled for goods pretty well. The best part of our stay was eating at the local food halls at night. Cheap local foods as well as other countries if you're not adventurous and cheap beer. If only once then you need to try eating there.

As a grandmother travelling with daughter and granddaughter this was perfect. Beautiful gardens and space to find peaceful setting to relax, gardens spectacular as was the buildings and rooms. Many eating areas, enjoyed sitting outside for meals listening to the sea. Lots of beach activities to participate in. Great for families - or grannies.
