How to Get There
We stayed here in the Rasa Wing for 5 nights last week, which was at the end of 10 days travelling from Singapore. When we first arrived to check in we were asked to take a seat in the lounge and enjoy afternoon tea. From start to finish the service was exemplary. A special thanks to Fariz, whom in the afternoon always had my husband’s beer followed by 2 gin and tonics at the ready. Receptionists; Ruby and Leah deserve a mention too for being able to handle our queries and demonstrate personal service.
The breakfast in the restaurant was excellent and once again the staff, particularly the lady meeting and greeting were very professional, we enjoyed the formal style, and a huge choice of food.
The swimming pool was the warmest that I have ever swam in and again the staff were very customer orientated. There were always loungers unoccupied.
We used the free hotel shuttle to pop into George Town on two separate occasions and walked to the hawker stands near the hotel, for a bite to eat some evenings.
If a beach holiday is important to you I would comment that the white candy beach looked nice and clean but my husband felt the sea was not so, and therefore only swam in it once. The public beach didn’t have any facilities.
If a relaxing break and a wish to feel spoiled is what you prefer, this is a great choice, additionally George Town, whilst not close, is near enough to go sightsee and spend interesting days out.
The location is the best in Batu Feringghi, beachfront, walking distance to hawker centres and souvenir shops. On the other hand, it's far from George Town heritage site. Nevertheless, they offer free shuttle services going there. We spent one day in Shangri La as our first stop in Penang because we needed to recharge from a hectic week before embarking on our trip to George Town. We stayed in Rasa Wing which gave us complimentary benefits including exclusive lounge access and free mini-bar items on the first day (softdrinks, beers, and a Kit Kat). Other than this, we also enjoyed relaxing and swimming in the adult pool also exclusive for Rasa Wing guests. Although it was crowded on a Sunday especially during mid-day, we went back at 4.30 pm and there were only 6 of us lounging by the pool. On Monday, there were many people but not full so, we still managed to choose a comfortable spot. After swimming we lazily sat on sun loungers in the huge garden space facing the beach. Although we can't actually see the beach from our place, we can still hear the waves and feel the fresh cool breeze made possible by the huge trees around. It was really a relaxing day being close to nature and with all the amenities that provided comfort.
However, we're not able to enjoy the complimentary high tea because we're still full from our lunch at the Spice Market Cafe, hence, I cannot make a review about it. We tried the pre-dinner cocktails though. There's a wide selection of drinks plus it was the attentiveness of the staff that we really appreciated. But, if you will stay in Garden Wing, the main pool was also lovely and huge especially for families. The only downside is the beach which is not good for swimming due to swarms of jellyfish. This is not the hotel's fault though. Overall, it was a beautiful hotel despite being old, the cleanliness was well maintained, the service was superb, so we'd definitely recommend this if you will stay in Batu Feringghi. And stay longer than one day!
Our first visit to Penang and the Shangri La in Batu Feringgi lived up to our expectations. We were in the Rasa wing and enjoyed all the little bonuses including the evening cocktails and snacks, a la carte breakfast (which is fantastic), afternoon tea, complimentary soft drinks and adult only pool. To be honest we enjoyed both pools as there weren't many children at the resort.
We were on bed and breakfast so ventured out in the evening to the local restaurants and bars which were amazing and cheap. We went to the food court Long Beach and Andrews Kampung.
The hotel is set in amazing tropical gardens which are very well maintained. You can either sit by the pool or in the gardens if you are sunbathing and there is plenty of shade. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean, although we didn't have the best view looking out over the front of the hotel. The only disappointment is the beach area which is not terribly clean and I wouldn't swim in the sea as it looks polluted.
All the staff are helpful and friendly, and really make an effort to engage with the guests.
Staff were welcoming and attentive and we had a number of great meals, both at the restaurant by the beach and the spice market.
The hotel is definitely due a refurbishment but still in good condition. Not the faded colonial grandeur of the E&O but if you want to be on a beach with some lovely sunsets this is a great option.
We stayed at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang resort for 5 nights and it was wonderfull. First of all big compliments to the staff, they are very helpfull when needed, friendly and professional they reserve a table in a restaurant “outside”,arange a taxi, put towels on your beachchair.Always with a smile. They make you feel welcome. The design of the hotel is classy and stylefull. At the pool there are plenty sunbeds. The breakfast was great as well as the diner and buffet at the spice restaurant Our room was great with a very comfortable bed.Well soundinsolated. If we would come back without any doubt this would our choice.
