Getting rusty Resort

This property does have several swimming pools. Breakfast buffet has good selection. It is right next to the beach. Otherwise it was a very disappointing visit. To begin with, check in took more then 1/2 hour even though we arrived around 3:00 pm. Staff at check in didn’t guide us what’s available on the property or any activities. We had two rooms. One of the room key wouldn’t start AC and lights. It took several calls, personal visit to the front desk before it got resolved. In the morning there was no water in the shower. Again it took several calls and personal visit to front desk before it got resolved. Next morning while in the shower there was no hot water even though I waited 10 minutes. Finally I took shower with cold water. At the beach there were dozens and dozens hawkers trying to sell you sports activities. You just can’t enjoy the beach. Rooms were old and rusty. This is probably one of the worst resort I stayed. Never come back or recommend any one.

My wife and I just returned from 7 nights at the Golden Sands. we travelled with our daughter, her husband and our 2 grandsons aged 1 and 4. The resort was absolutely fantastic. The breakfast was great with lots of choices and we had the buffet dinner on Monday night where they had a buy one get one free offer. The food was delicious and varied.
The play zone for the kids was the highlight. They have awesome pools for kids and adults and the water slides and splash zone were great fun. We had an Executive Seaview Room which overlooked the beach and it was well appointed, had great aircon and the housekeeping staff did an excellent job.
The Adventure Zone at the back of the resort was a major hit with our 4 yr old grandson.
Whilst the rooms are in the process of being updated, we found the hotel very clean and reasonably priced. Our room however didn't seem to need an upgrade and we were exceptionally happy with the facilities and staff.
We would definitely return with our children and grandkids when in Penang.

I am writing this review based upon my experience over Xmas. Whilst the beach and bars and pool are really good. The rooms and decor are disgusting, my room was next to the local mosque, which is not an issue personally for me but i explicity requested not to be there as the call for prayer can disrupt your holiday. Overall, service is really slow and in hindsight I would have not paid the premium price that I did for the shabby surroundings, avoid if you can. Only reason I dont rate this lower is that pool area and surroundings are nice and my young kids enjoyed it, but apart from that this place is one of the most filthiest hotels I have ever stayed at. Staff are nice but a lack of investment lets them down. Maybe pay extra for the sister hotel next door which to be honest looked immaculate but so was the price.

We arrived on a very early flight so night blocked the previous night (at a cost!) so we could access our room immediately. The check in was RIDICULOUSLY long as they had not linked the night block booking and our normal booking for some reason so with two small children in tow, it wasn't off to a great start.
Once we were seen to our room it was immediately apparent that the previous guest had been smoking in the room and it was really pungent. My husband is asthmatic and we requested a new room. They claimed none was available and they put an air 'purifier' in the room, which did little but make noise. The manager said he would move us as soon as something else was available, likely before 1pm. This never happened, despite two follow up calls and an in person request, so sadly, we spent our two days in a room that reeked of cigarette smoke. So bad in fact, our clothes that were not laundered after we left still stunk of smoke.
The good points.....
Breakfast is great
Pool area and slides are great for the kids, with attentive life guards.
House keeping is attentive and responsive to requests.

Overpriced Hotel and staff don't seem to care at all.

June 22nd / 18 My lady and myself arrived at this hotel in the evening (around 7:30pm).
We had been on planes and in airports all day (flew out of Perth Australia at 7am)...so in effect we were up at 3:30am. We stood in a queue for over 45 minutes just to check in, and eventually got our room keys, and went up to our room to relax for a bit before we went out for dinner on the main street, and also a bit of bargain shopping for nic nacs.
When we returned to the hotel at around 9:30pm, we both needed to shower, and as my lady was about to dive into the shower, she mentioned to me that there were no bath towels in the bathroom. So I made the trek down to the check in counter and once again had to wait in the queue for 20 minutes to complain that there were no towels in the room. The girl on the desk said that she will send some straight away, so I went back up to the room to wait for towels. It was after 10pm by this time, and we waited and waited and waited. Finally my lady and I both went downstairs at 11:15pm to speak to the night manager to complain that no one had brought us towels, and he was very apologetic, and said he would send towels straight away. It was almost midnight and still no towels, and after waiting a while longer in our room and still no towels, I went for a walk on our floor, and found a laundry room between suites, and was lucky enough to find 2 clean bath towels. Not long after that we actually had towels delivered to our room. Also during our first night, the safe had to have the keypad replaced as it wasn't working, and the air conditioning won't work until you lock the balcony doors, and then move the locked door half an inch to the left. A mighty feat of engineering. At close to RM600 ($200 Australian Dollars) this is way over the top for this smelly old Hotel built in the late 70's? The place was packed though, so you'd think they would spend some money on refurbishing. Avoid. Better places to stay in Penang.
