Profitability first, put DND signage if you want smoke in hotel room!
Reviewed 1 day ago

The room is bit old but still acceptable but may need refurbishment in the near future. The sound proofing is definitely require some attention as was poor, we could hear clearly what the next room was talking and when they walk and move around especially at night.

The next room was smoking and we reported to the receptionist but no action was taken at day 1 - just a mere notification to the tour leader since they belongs to tour group. It happened again at night when my kids were sleeping and we reported again. The hotel personnel suggested us to move to other room or put an air filter for us. Our kids were sleeping and we were asked to move for that somebody to continue smoke.

The next morning it happened again and somebody went up and the room was with DND sign. The personnel said they can't do anything as the room was in DND sign! Again this surprised me how on earth they manage such situation. By putting DND signage, you are allowed to smoke freely! She mentioned there was a signage in room stating fine RM200 for those who smokes where we didn't even realised as it was so small note on the table. That translates to pay RM200 to smoke in room??

We only realised the sign everywhere in the hotel stating no outside foods or else RM500 will be charged to your room!

I can't believe how a world class hotel Shangri-la that claimed to be a family friendly hotel treat the smoking issue so light which is by-law no smoking in air conditioned room! The hotel just bother about profitability - heavier fine for bringing foods in than smoking in the room!

Most terrible vacations

I feel very suffer to stay in this 5 star hotel which is most recognise in top 5 in penang Island. I was assigned to the end corner area in 4th floor which right behind the religious prayer area & do not informed by front desk officer. I started realize is too late when is middle before 11pm, I can't rest well & which I try ignore lound sound came out from outsite till 12pm.

I requested to change room but not offer buggy service to transfer my luggage which I change mind not to swift room as late in the night & my children slept also.

The bathroom is super dirty end up with mole, dark spot & broken stuffs. I enclosed for your guys references if you really to choose stay in here.

I rather pay more stay next door Hard Rock Hotel which is more hygiene & comfort.i feel disappointed that the hotel do not offer any compensation which only know to address " sorry to heard that sir" but does it make any different?

They only know to inform you that give comment in here but do take any commitment to call me.

Plese do not eat in their cafe restaurants for dinner buffet “so cal buy 1 free 1 offer". The variety food do not have much selection & very bad taste. The breakfast is okay but not much food to taste good.

In great need of TLC
Reviewed 3 days ago

We have always stayed at the Golden Sands Resort for the past 10 years (each and every time we come to Penang), however I think it’s fair to say that the hotel is in need of a little TLC. There are obvious patches of fading paintwork, tiles missing from roofs, and even patches of water leakage markings on walls. The rooms are beginning to show their age, which is a little disheartening given the price and the stature carried by Shangri-La. There were obvious discrepancies between rooms, with some having cushions on the verandas and some not (we recently booked 3 rooms and only 1 had cushions - obviously not a big deal but noteworthy.

You are provided glass bottled water in the room, but no minibar. There’s a safe, ironing board, and prayer mat, but no dressing gown or slippers like they used to have. I noted that despite drinking the providing Teas and Coffees, these weren’t replaced upon the daily clean, just spread out and rearranged to look like they had been.

Besides the above, the stay was still comfortable - just not like it used to be. The resort is extremely popular with kids (due to the location and the nearby amenities and pools). The rooms were quiet and spacious, providing a nice escape when it did get a little too noisy poolside. The breakfast spread was okay, with cereal, fresh eggs, western food, Roti, Nasi, and even desserts. The overall atmosphere is still pleasant, with staff being attentive and warm in their welcome.

There is a free shuttle bus into George Town (or Gurney Plaza just before) each and every day. Simply register at the Transportation Desk and you will receive a receipt slip to show on the day. The bus will stop in town at Hotel Jen (the old Traders Hotel). There’s a small gym, and a handful of boutique style shops on site. A McDonald’s and KFC over the road, with 2/3 food courts towards the right as you exit the hotel. The Night Market (Pasar Malam) is on every night and is located right outside the hotel. This is filled with “genuine imitation” goods and local foods - definitely worth a wander through at least once.

Directly on the beach from there are water sports activities, masseuses, and other local offerings. For those wanting a little more peace and quiet - why not take a stroll down to the Rasa Sayang Resort next door.

All-in-all, the stay was pleasant but a little substandard. Having always stayed, I was excited to experience the quality that I had always received (without sounding snobby) but I was left a little empty handed. This resort is great for young families with kids, but for couples I’d suggest either the Lone Pine or the Rasa Sayang.

Returning visit with family
Reviewed 3 days ago

This is a return visit for my family and it is still the best hotel ever, as quoted by my kids. Superb breakfast spread and hospitality by the staff.

However, the hotel is doing some upgrading works. Smell of paint can be detected along the corridors as the room doors are painted with new coat of paint. Would be great if they could use odourless paint.

Pool experience were poor this time as the lifeguards allowed a group of families and other guests which are fully clothed to be allowed to swim or dipped into the pool. I don’t mind fully covered swimming attire but not t shirts and pants or a dress and a hat. Some fully clothed guests even went on the slides which I think it’s not very safe.

I do hope the hotel management can look into this.

My daughter said 'best hotel ever'

A great family getaway resort. Pool is nice and with various depth to cater for all age groups. Kids will have their fun time at the Kids Club and Adventure Zone. Excellent service from the front counter staff especially Mr. Alex, accommodates to most of our request. Walking distance to the night market and hawker food stall. Very comfy beds.
