How to Get There
We checked into the Golden Sands Resort at the early part of the school holidays as a little get-away, alone time from the kids. Check-in was smooth and the room we got was very spacious and comfortable.
The Golden Sands Resort in Batu Feringghi needs no introduction as it has a well known reputation - a favorite family destination and they have definitely made many improvements over the years. What I admire the most about the resort is their landscaping and cleanliness. You can see the efforts being put in to maintain such a lovely property!
However, having said all this, I personally feel that the level of service attentiveness towards guests had slightly dipped. It could be due to the busy environment due to school holidays, but the warmth, the welcome is just not as it used to be.
Overall? Well with it's reputation, the Golden Sands will surely continue to be the holiday destination, but if they don't pay attention to general warmth and welcoming - the regulars might feel the changes.
Staffs are friendly, breakfast is good and this resort is great for kids. I've tried the massage at the beach and it is so cheap and relaxing. Room is just normal and a bit old but overall is still satisfied.
For me, the two main selling points of this hotel are the direct access to the beach and the family oriented atmosphere. It is not a quiet place for rest nor is it suitable for a romantic escapade. But it is ideal for families with young children who will love the water slides or those with teens who might enjoy the water sports at the beach.
The beach activities are not managed by the hotel but the operators seem professional enough. We did the parasailing and waterscooter activities which went very well. Equipment looked new and clear instructions given. The beach was clean and sandy (not pebbly) and best of all, not crowded.
Nevertheless, the overall hotel experience was only average. One is tempted to overlook some flaws due to the enjoyable facilities and the beach. We have been here numerous times over the past 2 decades, and we know the rooms have been given a facelift. But the building is aging and it shows. More needs to be done. Out of the 4 rooms we booked, one had plumbing and another had air-conditioning problems. No doubt the problems were solved swiftly but the presence of maintenance guys in your room and the uncertainty of repair can threaten to mar your vacation. Oh, and the hot water system is not totally reliable - one of the nights, I had to shower in lukewarm water but the other nights were fine. Also, one of the lifts and the ice-making machine on the 7th floor were not working the whole time we were there.
Service standards seem to have fallen but this could also be due to certain individuals not doing their jobs. On arrival, our luggage was not sent to our room and one hour later, we went down to get them ourselves. We had to remind them twice to set up the extra bed. And the bath gel/shampoo were not replenished - that was rectified when we called housekeeping. Not a big deal certainly, but all these little incidents add up to tell a story of slipping service standards.
Thing is, I would still come back here the next time we are in Penang. The location and natural setting of this hotel is just too good. The beach, the facilities, the surrounding shops and eateries, the 24-hr McDonald's across the road, the magnificent trees in the compound, the sea view from the 7th floor balcony... I just hope the management does not let complacency override all the good things. This resort is definitely an asset and should be looked after well.
Sea view room very good as hotel rooms go. Fantastic ocean views.
Kids will love the place.
Nice outside bar/restuarant which has live and loud music heard in every room most nights until 11 pm.
Mixture of staff types, some are polite and very helpful while others really not interested in you. Many foreign worker staff do not speak or understand English.
If you want a more relaxed and peaceful holiday, pay a little extra and book the Rasa Sayang next door.
We loved everything about this hotel. The staffs were all ever so friendly! Check in was a breeze despite the heavy traffic & the pool is perfect for both kids & adults. You don’t have to go far for local food as they’re walking distance away from the hotel. So are the (budget) spas. McDonalds is opposite the hotel. If you can, ask for rooms on the higher floors, the view gets better. Odd no rooms will get you the view of the road outside the hotel while even no rooms will give you the beach. This is a hotel that we’ll definitely return to if in Penang!
