How to Get There
Having arrived on the train and walked through the enormous retail ‘opportunity’ that is waiting for you around the station, we were walked down the hill to the Sumac hotel. From the moment you walked in you knew that this was somewhere special, which was surprising considering that most patrons will only stay one night on their way to Machu Pichu. Fantastic, polite, well-informed reception staff who were well used to taking care of baggage no matter what time you arrived or departed. Lovely spacious rooms, well-appointed and extremely comfortable. Delightful lounge area with good WiFi throughout. Helpful bar and restaurant staff, and probably the best food we experienced, at dinner, in the whole of Peru. Some noise form early morning trekkers, and the transfer buses to Machu Pichu, but of little consequence. Definitely recommended.
We stayed here just a few hours, after arriving on the evning train, then heading out at 6AM for Machu Pichu, and have no complaints.
Staff were superb - very friendly and efficient and the rooms are a decent size, and have a modern, clean look.
Our room faced away from the river, and we were a little concerned to discover ear plugs on the bed. There were explained shortly afterwards when we saw a train just a few metres from our window. However, either the trains don't run all night, or the double glazing works, as we were not disturbed during the night.
We were on a package with dinner and breakfast and while dinner choices were limited, the food was good, served fast, and with very good service.
The hotel is in a stunning spot, just down the road from the town, looking on a river and mountain, so, it's worth getting a room facing the front.
It's an easy 5 minute walk from the train, town and shuttle buses to Machu Picchu, though the road ends a few hundred metres from the hotel and you need to walk through a muddy dirt section to check in. However, the roadworks out front indicate this should be fixed soon.
This is not a town worth an extended stay - it exists purely as a place to sleep on the way to, or from Machu Pichu, but Sumaq does the job well - a good sleep, great service, and a decent meal, all a short walk from everywhere you need to go.
We spent one night at this hotel. I would be reluctant to rate it as a very good hotel, but it certainly is a good hotel. The room feels a bit cramped but it is very clean & well maintained; good bathroom, excellent beds. The train station, shops, bars & restaurants are within 5 minutes walking distance.
