We completed 9 miles of Inca trail to arrive at this wonderful restful hotel. Next day we hiked huayna picchu and Machu Picchu then returned to this hotel. Stayed two nights and rested, slow down and enjoy the wonderful meals at this hotel . We all deserve it. Took the train back in the morning day 3

Lovely hotel right next to the river

This is a beautiful hotel in Aguas Calientes. My daughter and I arrived around 9:30 p.m., exhausted after a long day of hiking around the Sacred Valley. The hotel staff were accommodating and helpful. Our stay included dinner, so we ordered something off the menu and had it delivered to our room. I have to say the food was...ok. We ordered minestrone soup and it was nothing like any minestrone we've ever had before. I realize we were in Peru, where they don't "specialize" in minestrone, but it had a green base, large chunks of steak...just not what we'd envisioned or hoped for after that long day. The food is on the fancier side, more like nouvelle cuisine, and we just weren't feeling it that night. We got up early the next day to head up to Macchu Picchu, so we didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel, but the beds and rooms were nice, and the staff were lovely.

HOtel looks great from the lobby, but the rooms were small, no hangers in the closet, the local train is 20 feet outside your window. I thought an airplane was landing on top of the building during the night...it was a train passing by...what a way to wake up!
The staff at the front desk seemed unexperienced.LOcation is perfect to head to Machu PIcchu day trip to hike the trails. Great location to the local shops, footsteps away.

Best of the Best

Of the five hotels we used in Peru, the Sumaq, Aguas Calientes, was clearly the best. Starting with the "curb appeal" of the building, our stay got better and better. Staff personnel were accessible, friendly, and helpful. The restuarant was excellent with a full array of typical Peruvian and internatinal cuisine. The ceviche was wonderfully tart and spicy, and the veal done perfectly. We enjoyed classes (included) in making ceviche and pisco sours, thanks to a capable bartender and a well-schooled chef. The rooms are ample, clean, and well decorated. Beds are comfortable and the pillows excellent. The only drawback was intermittant access to WiFi; one almost had to be in halls and public areas to get on line. A minor issue for an otherwise excellent establishment
