How to Get There
We have just spent a week at St Nicolas Bay. It’s a nice hotel, located on a very nice part of the island. The staff are very nice and helpful. Breakfast is excellent with lots of choice. Plenty of sun beds around a good pool. Good gym and spa area which can be used for free. However this hotel is very expensive, 39 euros for a bottle of wine at dinner and 19 euros for a club sandwich if that’s what you fancy at lunchtime. We stayed on a DBB option and like others have said the starter is good, however main course and dessert really let it down. We didn’t try the a la carte restaurants as the prices were through the roof. In regards to the room, the bed was cheap and uncomfortable and the quality of bed linen was poor. We had a drain dripping outside the room and the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall along with wobbly taps. Air conditioning in the room was very noisy. Be prepared to pay for coffee in your room, something we’ve never experienced before and found really bad considering it’s advertised as a 5* hotel. We wouldn’t return because what we paid we’d expect much more, however we would recommend the hotel as it’s probably the best in the area. The area itself around the hotel is very run down but you will find a couple of bars and tavernas that will accommodate you for a couple of drinks and lunch. Be warned they do offer a turn down service and will leave you water and chocolate which is nice but they knock once and enter the room before you’ve had a chance to open the door, so you could get caught laying on your bed in your birthday suit if you’re not quick.....
Just returned from a very relaxing break at this great hotel , my brother and I took my mum here for a Christmas present , because of her age and mobility asked for ground floor interconnecting rooms .
Rooms were perfect and just what we requested , recently refurbished , spotlessly clean and right in the centre of the resort close to all the amenities.
Staff were excellent in my opinion , all very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was extensive with wide ranging selection for all with gluten and sugar free options .
We had complimentary half board and used that on three occasions . I agree with the comments regarding the starters and desserts being good , however the main courses were a bit “canteen” like but still nice .
To be honest we saw the half board as a bonus so preferred to go into Elounda or Aghios Nikolias where there were a number of great restaurants to choose from , both towns a short taxi ride away .
Lunchtime meals at the beach restaurant were more expensive than in the local town but this is countered with great views, service and all were very tasty .
I agree a happy hour would be a good idea to introduce , particularly around late afternoon at the beach restaurant .
Would I come back ? In a shot !
The differences in opinion about this hotel are quite wide and obviously subjective depending what your baseline is. Both my wife have stayed in many 5-star hotels around the world and selected this hotel primarily for a week of relaxation. In summary the location, facilities and ambiance of the hotel met this criteria and departed happy for the break. A decent room with a balcony overlooking the sea was a major tick in the box for me. The outdoor terrace near the bay was great for sun bathing and ease of sea access for an occasional 'refreshing' dip was good. There were some nice touches during our stay that included manager greeting on arrival, a complementary birthday cake, a complementary bottle of bubbly (not champagne) and a pre-dinner invite for a few glasses champagne (bubbly not champagne). The breakfast was decent & had a good range of buffet options both for the healthy and those with a sweet tooth and no extra charges for multiple double expresso's. Also special requirements catered for i.e almond milk on request.
The food and drink prices are definitively 5 star and not justified in my opinion (especially wine prices with only a few bottles less than 30 Euro). Overall this pricing philosophy is a little detrimental to business for the hotel as we were very conservative what we ordered from the daytime bar/restaurant opting to eat out more often than we had originally planned to. The free spending holiday spirit was definitely inhibited here with no happy hour to feel you could claw back a little value. Whilst the a la carte food was of decent quality and reasonable portion sizes at the Blue Bay beach café, the cost was more than double what you pay outside. With a Greek salad costing 16 euro's, burger 24 euro's, washed down with a 30 Euro bottle of wine (12 Euro in shops), the lunchtime bill gets expensive very quickly.
We had booked half board and the associated meals were mediocre at best...I really expected more quality and local variety than this from a 5-star establishment and on many occasions we forfeited this option or kept to starters only with reasonable salad bar. The fact you only get 25% off the evening a la carte menus (we tried the Greek restaurant & confirm superior quality food) gives an indication of the 'half board' meal cost.
I should mention that 80% of the staff were super friendly and only had issue with a couple of older, more complacent individuals whom I found to be overly condescending at times.
The rooms we had was a decent size, good shower and supplied with some quality toiletries. The room was clean on face value although if looked you could find dust (handing frame above bed). The beds and pillows were definately not at the high end of the comfort scale and room did lack tea making services which is the first time ever that I have not been able to make a cuppa whilst staying at a 5 star hotel (note that the room did have a Nespresso machine for coffee lovers).
Overall we did thoroughly enjoy the stay and hopefully the hotel management can address improvement in value for the food and drinks on offer. Would we go back?.. Probably...although would remain conservative on drink/food expenditure at current hotel prices.
A beautifully designed resort hotel with excellent rooms and mostly very good service and all the usual facilities.
Most guests seem to be on half board but that provides only a 25% discount in the two a la carte restaurants. The remaining restaurant provides a good buffet for starters and desserts but a choice of three mains which must be ordered and are brought to the table. These are quite poor and are not of the standard one would expect.
It's a half-hour walk into Agios Nicolaos. There is a bus service but the timetable is completely unreliable. Taxis are readily available.
There is an extensive buffet breakfast and a variety of eggs and pancakes available to order, but the cereals and baked goods are mediocre.
This is a good hotel with a hard-working staff and marvellous views and excellent facilities, but there is room for improvement.
We stayed in a suite with private pool and have to say it was an enjoyable week. Room was cleaned twice daily, plenty of toiletries for both shower and separate bath room and with an ocean view from you pool or sun deck, you couldn't ask for much more. Room was very spacious. We stayed half board and used the main restaurant which each day gave you three main course options which were cooked for you, but starters and deserts were from the buffet, most of which was to a very good standard. Staff were generally very helpful and polite, just slow service. They have two other a la carte restaurants where you get 25% off, but with a decent standard and variety in the main restaurant, we didn't see the need to pay the pricey extra charges for a la carte. Bar prices are what you should expect from a 5* hotel about €9 for a spirit with coke etc, but measures were at least double! We also used the Spa, very nice facility and well managed by the team, who promote the Elemis brand and our treatment was to a good standard, around €95 for 60 minute massage.
So why not 5* from me? Well some of the furniture was old and needed replacing. Our bedroom TV at the end of our bed was below the bed line and so you couldn't see the bottom of the TV in Bed, daft location really. Styling in the bedroom was looking a bit dated, but very clean. Old sun-beds by pools with some dirty (sun cream) bed mattress. Slow service most days in restaurants.
So I summarise by saying it is a very nice hotel and very clean., but it is looking a bit dated in styling. Probably secure the 5* rating because of the standards and facilities, but in reality its more of a 4Plus Star rating from me. It's just at these prices, you might expect a little more.
