Situated directly on the beach at Great Bay, Holland House Beach Hotel has 54 guestrooms that have a simple, beachy aesthetic: pops of lemongrass and mauve, hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open up to spacious furnished private balconies. Walk straight out onto the sand to the hotel’s private beach loungers, where attendants are always on hand to bring you a refreshing cocktail or a bite to eat. The Ocean Lounge Bar & Restaurant mixes Caribbean and European cuisines into mouthwatering surf-and-turf. Signature dishes include roast rack of lamb and mahi-mahi and caviar. For extra R&R, the hotel can arrange in-room massages and aromatherapy treatments. But if you’re looking to flex that plastic, step out the hotel’s front door and you’ll find yourself on Philipsburg’s main shopping street.
In the Area
Pop your head below the ocean’s surface with Sea Trek, a helmet diving tour that takes you to see colorful fish and sunken shipwrecks without the need for diving certification. Another unique way to explore the island’s coral reefs is on a tour with Coconut Reef Glass Bottom Canoes; the company also runs a surf school and snorkeling tours. With 25 miles of trails, and itineraries ranging from mountain treks to shoreline strolls, St. Maarten is a hiker’s paradise. Start at Loterie Farm for guided and self-guided hikes.
How to Get There
This was my first stop on my first trip to the island. This hotel has one of the best locations in Philipsburg. The hotel and beach are central to everything. That this wasn’t one of the more impressive hotels I’ve stayed in is immaterial, because they have the best location. My room, 311, was ordinary in every way. It was clean enough and I very much appreciated the clean bathroom with a nice shower area. I had a Front Street view which is completely boring; but again completely inconsequential as you should be spending as much time as possible outside on the beach. The outside bar area is more updated than the hotel in general and quite pleasant. It would be a great place to spend a lot of time, except for the spotty service. During my visit, many patrons had to wait to order at the bar, because the wait service was disorganized. I ate at nearby restaurants however, as I found the main restaurant food dismal. Notably, I had a scallop tartare, that was bland. Sadly the most flavorful thing on the plate was the balsamic reduction. The simple bar food is better. Despite those annoyances (and especially after having stayed at other hotels nearby), I recommend the hotel. It’s safe and convenient.
A gem close to Florida Road and easy access to the beach.
Amazing breakfast - Maggie’s omelette is to die for! Would recommend wholeheartedly. A magical garden, great views, massive rooms, secure parking. I hope to return one day!
