What To Know
Though not a traditional beach hotel, the wild southeast corner of St. Barts offers challenging surf
Kids are welcome, but the hushed ambience is better suited to couples
The cliff setting and matrix of stairways aren’t ideal for guests with limited mobility
Romantic boutique sleep with haute French fare on the surf-battered southeastern coast of St. Barts
Classic tropical hideaway. Miles from sceney Gustavia, Hotel Le Toiny is a couples-friendly spot for romance, refuge and relaxation. With traditional French Caribbean style in mahogany, teak and tulle, Le Toiny has the feel of an old colonial plantation house. Poised on a remote cliff overlooking the blustery Bay of Toiny, there are just 15 bungalows with private gated entrances and heated pools.
Bed and Bath
More private residences than suites, each of the 15 villas has vaulted ceilings, hardwood plank floors and French colonial teak furnishings. The grand four-poster mahogany beds are kingsize studies in bliss — all butter-soft Egyptian cotton in bright white. Mod cons include WiFi, 40-inch satellite plasma televisions, iPod stations and kitchenettes with fully stocked Nespresso machines.
The only chef in the Caribbean with the same Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef status as the likes of Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller, Le Toiny’s Stéphane Mazières is at the helm of the dramatic cliffside restaurant, Le Gaïac. Don’t miss the signature pasta dish, which is prepared tableside in a wheel of parmigiano reggiano and tossed with black truffles. For further indulgence, head to the Serenity Spa Cottage for treatments that use island-made Ligne St. Barts products and panoramic sea views.
