Beautifully refurbished military fort turned cliffside hotel with spectacular views of the Bay of Palma
The historic appeal of Hotel Cap Rocat is apparent from the moment you cross the drawbridge: the ramparts, turrets, and other remnants of the fort, which was built in the 19th century and can’t be seen until you get close, elicit a tangible feeling of sanctuary. The views out over the Bay of Palma provide a fabulous backdrop to the many activities on offer here, from tennis on the clay courts and snorkeling in the water to deep-sea fishing and outdoor yoga on the terrace. Most of the two rooms and 27 suites were originally cannon emplacements; now, they’re marble and stone refuges that complement the marés sandstone of the fort’s exterior. Bathrooms have deep tubs and free-standing showers, while the rooms themselves, comfortably furnished, exit onto little paths and promontories left over from the fort’s erection. It all adds to the most delightfully unusual setting.
In the Area
The hotel provides mountain bikes for guests, and the staff can suggest popular routes through the area, or you can cycle along the coast to Palma (but be warned: even if you’re in good shape, the trip will take more than an hour). Otherwise, ask the hotel to provide a car for the 30-minute drive to the historic city, where you can shop for couture, have lunch on the water, or party the night away in the one of the glam cocktail bars. Nearer to the hotel, try the Michelin-starred Es Moli de’n Bou for tour-de-force dinners of Mallorcan classics, or go for something more casual at Restaurante Panorámica Playa, where you can eat fresh fish and paella on a terrace with a view of the sea.
