Back inside the Ático penthouse, you can sip a cocktail by a huge open fireplace or dine on haute cuisine. This roomy, circular space’s high ceilings, large arched windows and pillars lend it a decidedly regal air. In the evenings, you might be entertained by music from the hotel’s resident DJ.
Both couples or individuals can be pampered in the Wellness Suite, where you can book the sauna for a private session and keep your fitness up in the in-house Technogym. Whether you spend the day sightseeing or shopping, or return late from sampling the city’s legendary nightlife, retire to the elegant modern haven of your room for a restful night’s sleep. This hotel is in the Unico portfolio, whose hotels are chosen for their unique style – stay here, and see why.
Superior rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and a king-sized bed, as well as wonderful city views. The décor is elegant and contemporary, with a calming color palette of neutrals. The en-suite bathrooms benefits from a walk-in shower with massage jets.
Ático restaurant is the hotel’s exceptional dining option. From the tip-top breakfasts to the avant-garde cuisine in the evenings, dishes here offer unparalleled freshness and flavor.
Step out of the front entrance, and many of Madrid’s main attractions are on your doorstep. The hotel lies at the intersection of two of the city’s most iconic streets: Alcalá and Gran Vía. From here, you can explore the unmissable museums of the old city, like the famous Prado and Reina Sofia, plus the grand squares and parks: Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace and El Retiro. You can also rub shoulders with the city’s smart set in the nearby Salesas neighborhood, with its great shopping by day and lively bars and clubs by night.
How to Get There
We were there for a destination wedding. We got a Suite Gran Via for ourselves for the weekend that connected to an Executive room for my daughter and her bf. We were able to have friends come by and have drinks with us in the large living room/dining room as well as have our daughter close by. The service was great. My husband loved the welcome champagne so much that they brought him a complimentary bottle and chips as soon as we got settled in our room. The included breakfasts were very good with a cold buffet and hot choices and bottomless champagne.
The rooms were lovely and the service great. We liked it so much that we have a layover in Madrid next month and will be staying again at the Principal Madrid.
I took my family on a recent trip to Madrid where we had the pleasure of spending three nights at The Principal Madrid. This is a wonderful boutique hotel. The staff was amazing in every way. Whether it was booking a Flamenco show or making a restaurant recommendation for us, everything was done very tastefully. They helped make our stay in Madrid special. Besides great food and customer service, the location could not be beat. It was walking distance from Plaza Mayor and Puerta Del Sol but at a location that was not so loud and crowded. A great place to stay.
Having never been to Madrid before, and having so many choices for luxury hotels, as they are so many high end-5 star's to choose from) it was very difficult to choose the right blend of authentic Spanish, location and design and levels of comfort. This hotel delivered on all fronts. Yes, of course you can always "pick things apart" and find flaws, but there was very little to object to here. Perfect location to choose as quite close to all things to visit, both cultural, dining & recreational. Check-in process with Joseph was as pleasant and efficient as can be. Joseph was courteous and assertive and friendly. Put us into two lovely rooms that could not have been nicer. We had a Jr. Suite that was perfectly acceptable. Large entrance foyer with comfortable writing desk and coffee station with high end furnishings. Nespresso machine & pods. Flatscreen TV shows only Spanish television. Living room sala was perfectly large enough for two with comfortable seating TV area and incredibly comfortable king bed with finest sheets. Small Bathroom is very high-end, w/high end appliances and tiling. Bath products are high end. Not overly scented /from Majorca designer. Ample high end thick toweling etc
Note: Bathtub enclosure is however very difficult to step into and is very dangerous
And the floors are very slippery when wet. BE CAUTIOUS.
Cont. Views from our large windows were outstanding of the Grand Via and beautiful architecture outside of you window. It was a pleasure at night with lights twinkling, and a pleasure during the day to see the activity and the views beyond.
The service was overall excellent from Concierge to Doormen to Bartender to the Housekeeping. Tipping is not expected or obvious. All housekeeping ladies were lovely and gracious and smiling. Each and every time i called to reception or room service (And I call alot) I was immediately greeted, and whatever I requested was immediately brought to me by friendly speedy staff. Breakfast was complimentary. It was attractive & varied with sufficient assortment of breakfast items, and whatever food items ordered were delicious and properly executed.
*One Negative Note: One of the staff member women servers is quite rude and completely "took her time" bringing my order of egg white omelette that took 25 minutes to arrive. NO APOLOGY, only excuse that she had "10 other orders before me". TERRIBLE and she should not work in such a fine hotel at the Principal.
Otherwise, no other issues.
Now, the Only negatives:
1.The pictures of the "pool" area online and Trip Advisor are not accurate and magnified. There is no pool. Do not be misled to think this. The chaise lounges are also not around the pretty flowing water area, they are placed elsewhere on the roof. The pretty "water area" is actually the bar in which you sit around having drinks (there is no possibility of a swim-as it is a trough and not a pool and is 2 feet by 10 ft.
2. The bathtub /shower enclosure in our Jr Suite is very dangerous.
3. The elevators are indeed small and some could /would be put-off somewhat by this. (the doors also get stuck often) but this is also sort of the charm.
4. The reception are is located on the 6th floor so that can be confusing.
5. The large bay windows in the room open wide and you can easily fall out. It's wonderful, but it is dangerous. In addition, the railing was loose. CUIDADO.!
Otherwise, OVERALL on the things in life that matter most for a hotel such as proper service, style, positioning and style- the Hotel Principal delivers top notch service & hospitality in a beautiful old restored lux building in a great area and staffed by very fine people. That's my review.
Would return again...!
