Overview

A five-star central Madrid boutique hotel in a landmark 1920s building, with fabulous city views

The Lowdown

You can almost feel the beating heart of Madrid when you stay at this renovated, centrally located five-star hotel, housed in a landmark 1920s building. You’ll certainly be able to see all the action from Principal Madrid’s amazing roof terrace, showing off some of the capital’s best cityscapes.
Back inside the Ático penthouse, you can sip a cocktail by a huge open fireplace or dine on haute cuisine. This roomy, circular space’s high ceilings, large arched windows and pillars lend it a decidedly regal air. In the evenings, you might be entertained by music from the hotel’s resident DJ.
Both couples or individuals can be pampered in the Wellness Suite, where you can book the sauna for a private session and keep your fitness up in the in-house Technogym. Whether you spend the day sightseeing or shopping, or return late from sampling the city’s legendary nightlife, retire to the elegant modern haven of your room for a restful night’s sleep. This hotel is in the Unico portfolio, whose hotels are chosen for their unique style – stay here, and see why.

Rooms

Superior rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and a king-sized bed, as well as wonderful city views. The décor is elegant and contemporary, with a calming color palette of neutrals. The en-suite bathrooms benefits from a walk-in shower with massage jets.

Dining

Ático restaurant is the hotel’s exceptional dining option. From the tip-top breakfasts to the avant-garde cuisine in the evenings, dishes here offer unparalleled freshness and flavor.

Location

Step out of the front entrance, and many of Madrid’s main attractions are on your doorstep. The hotel lies at the intersection of two of the city’s most iconic streets: Alcalá and Gran Vía. From here, you can explore the unmissable museums of the old city, like the famous Prado and Reina Sofia, plus the grand squares and parks: Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace and El Retiro. You can also rub shoulders with the city’s smart set in the nearby Salesas neighborhood, with its great shopping by day and lively bars and clubs by night.

Nice place, good service. No pool

We liked The Principal very much. Location and rooms are very good. Unfortunately there is no pool. Especially in the summertime, when the city is very hot, it would be nice to relax at a poolside. There are some sunbeds on the rooftop, But there is no service. That might be a nice suggestion. Than you don’t have to dress yourself up every time you’re getting a drink at the bar. Late breakfast (untill 11:30 am) is a big +.

Nice Hotel!

At first this hotel did not appear to be 5 star due to the small dark entrance lobby, but it improved when we got up to the 6th floor reception area. This hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to museums, shopping and popular sites. The downside is the noise, which is to be expected in a vibrant bustling city as Madrid, but we may have been happier in a more quiet location a bit away from center. The hotel is freshly updated, wonderful if you like black, but too dark for my taste. Our room was very clean and well appointed, comfortable bed and linens. However, the room was on the small side, which is not ideal for tall people like my husband and I. The staff is excellent: very polite, helpful and accommodating. The restaurant and roof terrace is delightful and breakfast is wonderful with lots of great options.

Stay here, you will love it

We stayed at The Pricipal Hotel Madrid for four nights. We were welcomed with a glass of Cava, which we enjoyed on the terrace near the Reception on the 6th floor. We were given an updgraded room whilst our bags were whisked away and waiting there for us.
The staff were wonderful, not overbearing or stuffy but always available and always very helpful.
Nothing was too much trouble.
The Hotel itself was a mixture of modern and classical with many features especially the terrace on the 7th floor.
The rooms were extremely well proportioned stylish and comfortable.
We will be back!

Great rooms, great staff, central location

This hotel is right off a main boulevard but you cant hear the noise from the rooms. There is a beautiful rooftop area for food and drinks. The rooms are modern, clean with great amenities. It's off an awkward one way street so the cabs sometimes drop you off the main boulevard. The common areas and the balconies are super charming. I would stay here again and highly recommend it.

Great location and Boutique style hotel

Part of the Design Hotels group and Starwood Partner. In a great location to most of the sights and heart of Madrid. Rooms are comfortable with great music system. I had a small issue with having to cancel a night due to family emergency but this was resolved very satisfactory.
