A five-star central Madrid boutique hotel in a landmark 1920s building, with fabulous city views

The Lowdown

You can almost feel the beating heart of Madrid when you stay at this renovated, centrally located five-star hotel, housed in a landmark 1920s building. You’ll certainly be able to see all the action from Principal Madrid’s amazing roof terrace, showing off some of the capital’s best cityscapes.
Back inside the Ático penthouse, you can sip a cocktail by a huge open fireplace or dine on haute cuisine. This roomy, circular space’s high ceilings, large arched windows and pillars lend it a decidedly regal air. In the evenings, you might be entertained by music from the hotel’s resident DJ.
Both couples or individuals can be pampered in the Wellness Suite, where you can book the sauna for a private session and keep your fitness up in the in-house Technogym. Whether you spend the day sightseeing or shopping, or return late from sampling the city’s legendary nightlife, retire to the elegant modern haven of your room for a restful night’s sleep. This hotel is in the Unico portfolio, whose hotels are chosen for their unique style – stay here, and see why.

Superior rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and a king-sized bed, as well as wonderful city views. The décor is elegant and contemporary, with a calming color palette of neutrals. The en-suite bathrooms benefits from a walk-in shower with massage jets.

Ático restaurant is the hotel’s exceptional dining option. From the tip-top breakfasts to the avant-garde cuisine in the evenings, dishes here offer unparalleled freshness and flavor.

Step out of the front entrance, and many of Madrid’s main attractions are on your doorstep. The hotel lies at the intersection of two of the city’s most iconic streets: Alcalá and Gran Vía. From here, you can explore the unmissable museums of the old city, like the famous Prado and Reina Sofia, plus the grand squares and parks: Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace and El Retiro. You can also rub shoulders with the city’s smart set in the nearby Salesas neighborhood, with its great shopping by day and lively bars and clubs by night.

Nice hotel, pity about the refurbishments
Reviewed 5 days ago

The hotel is nice, comfortable rooms, good breakfast, nice small gym. However, every time we were leaving the hotel we couldn't use the lift directly as the hotel was undergoing refurbishments. Moreover, we had to go up one floor each time to reach the ground floor. We also had to ask to change room as initially we were located right beside the gym at this caused a lot of noise.

Wonderful, stylish "2nd home" in the heart of Madrid
Reviewed 6 days ago

Stayed in the last years for sure about 30+ times at this wonderful premises in the heart of Madrid. I am not much into writing reviews, but after feeling so much "home" at the The Principal Madrid, I would like to drop a short comment to say thank you to all the staff for always treating me with an outstanding friendly and personal service.

I spend usually about 130+ nights a year in 5* hotels but The Principal made may stays like a "2nd home".

The location is so central right next to Gran Via street. Besides the passionate customer-centricity and the dedication of staff, the interior is very stylish, cosy and clean. Best of all is the roof-top terrace that provides a stunning view over Madrid and attracts lots people to have a sunset-drink. There are also sun-beds, outdoor-showers and tables/chairs to chill on the roof-top terrace.

Breakfast is delicious with attention to detail and top-quality - try the "Principal Eggs"! And not to forget, the beautiful, roofed outdoor loggia where you can have a relaxed afternoon-coffee with about 10m viewing distance to the impressive Metropolis building.

In essence - a highly recommendable place to stay - one of the very great, personal I have ever stayed with.

Will be back soonest!

Personalized boutique experience

This was my first stay and I found the staff and service were extremely personalized and very customer centric. Small touches including a hand-written welcome note and an attentive staff all made the stay memorable. I will stay here again during my next trip to Madrid.

Excellent Boutique Hotel, Outstanding Employees & Service, Very Clean Room, Surprising Food

This hotel was a last minute choice. We were completely surprised on our arrival, treated to beer and wine while we checked in, greeted by an engaging staff who were simply wonderful, and who eagerly took our luggage and secretly delivered it to our room before we arrived.

The bellmen were so kind upon our departures and arrivals, and helpful with any questions.

While it's a boutique hotel, the reception desk was incredibly talented with recommending restaurants. And on New Years, they sent us to an 8 course meal at a local restaurant with all sorts of cocktails and wines, and it was the most incredible meal we had had in Spain, and one of the last expensive ironically. Loved all of the front desk's recommendations - and their genuine care and kindness was amazing.

The king bed room was small, but very upgraded with lots of amenities. We loved the large bathroom and heated towels each morning -simply luxurious on a cold morning. We spent about two weeks at this hotel, taking a few side trips during our stay to Portugal and Italy. Each time upon our return the hotel, they would have a nice amenity in our room upon arrival, and our luggage we had stored at the hotel would be waiting for us in our room. My point to tell you this is they simply take care of all the details, including the bellmen - and you can feel the professional service.

Breakfast was wonderful each morning, and I recommend their special discount offer upon check-in if it includes breakfast. Fresh baked breads, and foods, and they even had fresh baked gluten free alternatives for my daughter. Small hotel - but huge deluxe breakfast with fresh cooked options - it was quite surprising including the professional waiters.

And they have a nice bar area, with a nice outside area on the balcony -- felt like a snug with cozy furniture and great cocktails. We grabbed a bottle of champagne and celebrated New Years on the roof of the hotel with other guests.

The hotel is an ideal location - we walked everywhere and rarely took any transportation - it seemed like everything was only a 15 minute casual walk from the hotel. You're in the center of everything at this location.

The area around the hotel and everywhere we walked seemed very safe. We were out late many nights and felt very safe in the area. There are two Paella restaurants just steps away from the hotel - and they ended up having the best Paella we found in Madrid. Just ask the front desk.

You will not be disappointed - this hotel experience and especially their staff - are a real treat. Enjoy!

We loved this hotel. Everything from the smooth checkin, the location, the room, the views from the terrace and the roof, the helpful and friendly staff, the breakfast and the general ambience. My new go-to hotel in Madrid
