Neoclassical palace turned 43-room boutique in Madrid's lively Chamberi neighborhood

The Lowdown

Set in a beautiful neoclassical palace in Madrid’s Chamberi neighborhood, this 43-room property combines historic features and a contemporary boutique aesthetic. The guestrooms are decorated with a monochrome color scheme and are kitted out with platform beds, chunky pale wood floors and flat-screen TVs. Each has a small balcony overlooking the city. It’s a short stroll from the Bilbao Metro Station and just two stops from Madrid’s iconic Plaza de España.

In the Area

For an art fix, check out the Prado, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, which features works by Joan Miró and Juan Gris. For a change of pace head to the Hammam al Andalus Madrid, a candlelit den of hot Arabian baths built atop a century-old well in the Almudena neighborhood. If you’ve come to Spain to eat your bodyweight in tapas, make a beeline for Mercado de San Miguel; it’s full of counters piled high with olives, breads and Spanish hams, and you often get a glass of wine thrown in gratis. Don’t miss the burrata stall.

Good Location

Good Hotel, close to Bilbao and Tribunal tube stations. Room was clean, quiet and the bed was very comfortable. Receptionists were very friendly and helpful. A bit complicated to work the air conditioning though.

Weak service from expensive hotel

My wife and I booked a pre-paid premium room and with that we got an air conditioner that failed to work after repeated restarts (which forced us to open windows to very noisy streets below), a shower door that leaked into a flooded floor WE had to mop up after each shower, no car parking service or affiliated location, and service staff that didn’t know much that could help us with our issues. Oh yeah, we were offered a room change the night before our departure and a free breakfast. Oh wow. I asked for and would expect a paid price adjustment, at least for the floor mopping service. Didn’t get it. Good luck if you book this place.

Big disappointment

Expected so much more for the money we paid. When booking we took a junior suite and at over 300€ quite pricey we thought. Yes Michael Buble was in town, yes Real Madrid we’re playing in a local derby, but still you would think a 4 star hotel would be that - 4 star. No! The room was in no way a suite. Quite small, in fact paid less for more in other hotels. The shower leaked like a sieve all over the bathroom floor and into the hall way. No coffee or tea making facilities. The bathroom was dated as the floor was lifting because of the shower, oh by the way, we just got a ‘sorry about that’ from reception. Breakfast was boring to say the least, processed meat and melon isn’t my idea of breakfast and yes I know it’s the continental way, but a bit of effort is needed here, and waiting 45 mins for an omelet was somewhat ridiculous. This was your One Shot, One Shot and you missed by a mile, wouldn’t come back here or anywhere else you might have a room unless you lower the price and upgrade the decor.
