What We Love

  • Within easy reach of high-end shopping and historical parks
  • Expertly crafted cocktails at the DRY Cosmopolitan Bar; try the vesper martini to start a night on the town
  • A short walk from Madrid’s comprehensive metro; you’re less than 10 minutes from any of the city’s diverse neighborhoods
  • Free Moët, late checkout and access to a private terrace with open-air Jacuzzi for RedLevel bookings
  • Across the street from the Teatro Fernán Gómez Center for Art and Theatre and the National Library of Spain, and just a few minutes from the Prado museum

What To Know

  • Quiet, with a generally mature clientele; you’re more likely to encounter families and couples than party seekers
  • Classically luxurious decor and an English-speaking staff mean you’re unlikely to find much native cultural charm
  • On-site restaurant and bars remain mellow and slightly underwhelming even on weekends
  • While certain neighborhoods erupt on weekends, Barrio de Salamanca remains residential and low-key, so expect to take a short walk to find any real nightlife

A great hotel in a great location
Reviewed 1 week ago

Stayed here for one night on a business trip, and liked it an awful lot.

The decor of the hotel is very nice, and it is generally in good repair. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially when my key didn't work the first time. I ended up in a premium room which was spacious (small sofa and desk as well as a good bed) - it even had a old fashioned trouser press and suit hanger, which was awesome. Late working meant sampling room service too, which was excellent.

The hotel is very centrally located - it's a gentle stroll to the various museums (so I am told), and if you're into shopping then this is probably the best place to stay.

So why not 5 stars? Well, compared with some other hotels I've given that to, this place didn't quite have the same range of amenities. The floorboards were creaky meaning I had a good sense of people moving around upstairs. And the toilet was set at an angle in the bathroom that meant I almost knocked the phone off the wall every time I went past it. (Of course, if you like phoning from the loo this might be a plus for you.)

But overall, a great hotel with much to recommend it. I would definitely stay here again.

Seeing red

I have visited the Gran Melia Fenix a number of times and have always appreciated the central location, high standard of accommodation and quietness of the rooms. That I keep returning is probably sufficient evidence that I like the place.

On arrival this time, I was informed that I was on the ‘Red Level’. Confusingly, there are two Red Levels being the 6th and 7th floors but rooms here have access to a dedicated check-in plus a lounge and free bar on the upper floor. You can also take breakfast up there.

Dinner in the restaraunt was very pleasant. It wasn’t warm enough to sit out on the balcony but doing so would otherwise have afforded an excellent view out over the city. Food was well presented and tasty, not cheap but then that is to be expected.

I liked the toiletries in my bathroom (Clarins). I had to stand in the bath to shower, one of my pet hates, but the shower head was a decent size and with good pressure. The size and shape of the bathroom required a complex manoeuvre, sliding around the door, to get to the loo. This exercise almost guaranteed stubbing your toe on a door stop set into the floor. I can still feel a dull ache from my toes.

Bed was enormous and very comfortable.

Clean and quite room, helpful staff, classy. Very well located. Very nice hotel and would stay there again. Price is high. Didn't try the breakfast due to the cost. Metro and Cercanias stations are nearby.

The best hotel in Madrid

Our other home in Madrid. The red level service is excellent. Great service and very good breakfast in the private lounge. Nice outdoor terrace in the top for cigar and brandy. The great location to Salamanca and to Retiro

Beautiful, Centrally Located Hotel
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This is a beautiful 5-star hotel that is centrally located in a very nice part of Madrid. It is a relatively short walk to Retiro Park, the Museum District, Gran Via or Plaza Mayor. Get the bed and breakfast package. The staff separates this hotel from other fine hotels. Gemma Martinez at the front desk was able to find me a doctor for my sinusitis and I was able to get in/out in less than 30 minutes. Laura Perez, who is very friendly and personable, efficiently handled all of our train reservations for several day trips. Sigrid was very but but very efficient in the breakfast buffet. Great to see Raquel again - she remembered us from previous visits and warmly greeted us. Michelangelo the bar manager, who we met here several years ago, is outstanding, has a great personality, is fun and very efficient. Miguel Angel a waiter in the bar was also fun but extremely efficient. Nicolette a waitress in the bar was pleasant, polite, friendly and fun but also extremely efficient. We will definitely be staying at this hotel when we return to Madrid next year.
