How to Get There
The "huts" are amazing and were definitely the best accommodation that we stayed in whilst in Sri Lanka. The safari's were great too, so much to see and although the only have 3 of the "Big 5" we think the animal density was probably higher than any other safari we've been on in Africa and India. Rooms were a definite high light, so comfortable and well planned with the outside deck and Jacuzzi a real nice touch, as were the all inclusive mini-bar, including alcoholic beverages. We went for the private safari's which at US$125 extra per trip were overly expensive we think, but definitely an advantage to have dedicated driver, spotter & guide for each trip.
This is the only place in Sri Lanka I stayed in, where I have been satisfied 100% ! The huts, luxury pavillions actually, are stunning architectural realisations. Free minibar is richly stuffed, plunge pool very welcome after a safari, outside shower always good idea. Food - a la carte - is delicious. Safaris, morning and afternoon ,managed by well informed rangers who give you plenty of explanations. Some people compared them to safaris in Afrika but Sri Lanka is not Afrika! They can not find you what they do not have. Thinking you will find lions here is proving you travel without any preparation. However we saw a leopard and they gave us all the time to admire it until the animal itself left . Above all I admired the dedication and enthousiasm of ALL the staff , something I found rather exceptionnal in Sri Lanka. Little attentions like the flag ceremony upon arrival, the special cake on St Valentine waiting in your room, show these people really care for you and love their job
Setting, people, rooms all excellent. Coming back from an early morning elephant drive to be greeted with cooked breakfast with a smile is all one can dream of.
I can’t recommend this fabulous lodge more highly. Thank you for a great few days
From the moment we arrived we were pampered. The location, quality of the “hut” , the food, the staff, everything was immaculate.
If you are hoping to walk on the beech, forget it, you can only go under supervision every night for a sundowner , because you are in a National Park where wild animals roam free!
The free safaris (two a day) were spectacular. Obviously it is a complete lottery as to what you see. Over the two days we saw everything on offer, save for the Sloth Bear. But we saw the fauna and birds (over 50 varieties) to boot. All in very comfortable vehicles, with enhanced safety measures and strengthened anti roll bars. The Park has some amazing scenery and includes both man -made and natural lakes. How it has recovered from the Tsunami in 2004 is quite remarkable; no animals were lost!
All this information was gleaned from our immaculate guide, Head Ranger Danou, who was very ably assisted by his driver Calu. Danou's knowledge is encyclopaedic, his English impeccable all delivered with a great sense of humour.
All this made for a very magical few days.
Would I recommentd it? Absolutely. Is it good value for money? Defintely.
To come away not having to pay for anything, and getting some free laundry into the bargain, save for tips for the wonderful staff was a unique experience.
It lived up to everything it offered.
Thank you everyone at Chena Huts for what will linger long in the memory
My husband and I stayed at Chena Huts for only one night as there was no availability for two as we would have wished. We did a safari in the evening and again in the morning and thoroughly enjoyed them both. Staying at Chena Huts gives you the advantage of having a driver and a very experienced, knowledgeable guide and also a comfortable, quality vehicle. All of the staff are extremely professional and the accommodation is of a high standard. It is expensive, but we couldn't find anything to fault and we had a very memorable stay.
