How to Get There

The Galle Fort Hotel
No 28, Church Street,Galle Fort
Galle, Sri Lanka

Lovely welcome with delicious passionfruit and mint juice.

Colonial building around a small fresh water pool, almost Moroccan in style. Service good but at table could be intrusive. Breakfasts very good with excellent hoppers. Staff knowledgable. 10 minute walk to New Galle for an experience of non tourist life. Very intimate and staff helpful with practical things, eg printing boarding passes.
4 poster bed with sheets decorated with fresh flowers felt very special

Convivial luxury

There is no check-in counter at Galle Forte. Instead you are ushered to a lounge where the formalities are taken care of and you are given a run-down on the history of the hotel. If you weren’t already, by now you should be feeling as if you are in a somewhat special place. We had a garden room which wasn’t huge, but adequate and quaint. And with the added peacefulness of no television. To get a Sri Lankan breakfast, we had to order the night before, but (luckily) we only found this out by chance. We spent two peaceful nights here which was more than enough time to visit all the Galle Fort attractions apart from the museums which unfortunately for us are closed on Sundays and Mondays. However, finding this information is pretty hard to do as the museums don’t display opening hours.

Exceptional Stay

We loved our stay at The Galle Fort - the attention to detail in the restoration was amazing, when we arrived we were told the history of the hotel and all its previous uses which was fascinating.
We had the Admiral Cheng Ho suite which was amazing - twin room with the second bed on a mezzanine (although the stairs are very noisy!). The bathroom was partially outdoors which was a really nice twist. The tea and coffee making facilities were the best we had encountered on our travels
The staff were very friendly and attentive but could be a little pushy, but saying that we had just come from the chilled out hippy hotels of Ella living in a tree top at 98 Acres! So I think it was probably just a more formal setting
We did not have dinner here - only because it was very quiet and we would have been the only people so we went elsewhere but I was disappointed not to have as the food sounded incredible. I had a bar snack when we arrived which was good and the drinks were excellent!
Breakfast was all homemade and plentiful, really tasty and love setting in the courtyard looking out over the pool
The bath robes in the room just cover your modesty and there is no TV if that bothers you - we had horrendous rain so could have been useful but not the end of the world.
Lovely little touches like sweet treats in your room and as part of the turn down service we got night cream
Really really lovely stay and you really did feel like you had stepped back in time
