Sprawling beach retreat in southwest Sri Lanka with an open-air waterfront restaurant and breezy rooms with balconies and Indian Ocean views

The Lowdown

Bunk down in a bold, sunny room at this Indian Ocean resort on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Colorful turquoise accent walls and bright orange linens complement the resort’s earthy beach scene, while intricately carved headboards add a dash of local charm. Upgrade to an Allure, Temptation or Presidential Suite for a walk-in closet, rainfall shower, and Forest Essentials ayurvedic toiletries. Poolside meals at the Palms include sprawling buffets that mix Western and Sri Lankan specialties, or you can opt for the Sri Lankan lunch platter, a mix of red rice, chicken curry, tempered radish, ambarella chutney, beans in coconut milk, and spicy coconut. Elevate evening dining at SHACK, an open-air seafood spot overlooking the ocean, and retire to Tease for a nightcap — a shot of Sri Lankan Coconut Arrack should do the trick.

In the Area

When you’ve tired of sunbathing on this prime stretch of Bentota Beach, ask the concierge to book a boat ride in the nearby mangrove backwaters or set up a visit to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery. A local family started the conservation project in 1988, and it protects five species of endangered turtle. Spend the evening on a champagne cruise down the Madu River, or arrange for a private dinner in a beach gazebo.

Dated property, but good service and food

Old property and shows its age. Many new properties have come up now in Sri Lanka.
The staff, service and food are still worth going back to this one.
Beach access is a plus
Spa is a short walk away from the main building
Responsive top management

Set in lovely grounds overlooking Indian Ocean.
Stayed in a sea view room which needed a facelift. In particular the bathroom was poor, dirty and worn. Other guests had better bathrooms so there appears to be a distinct difference for the same level of room.
The food at the Palms restaurant was good.
Also the staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent hotel for a romantic or quiet holiday. Beautiful white sand beach with the most glorious sunsets

Very well located overlooking the Ocean. A lovely quiet rejuvenating get away. Ideas hotel for honeymooners. Beautiful clean white sand beach overlooking the seafood restaurant. Glorious sunsets.. Very good food. Excellent bar with a fine live band. It boasts of a lovely infinity swimming pool. Very tastefully done up hotel. The General Manager Mr Ranjit Shanker is a wonderful and caring person who goes out of his way to make you feel at home. The executive chef Mr Neeraj Choudhary is also extremely good. The hotel has a good shopping arcade which is quite affordable with a good variety . The spa is very good. The bar is super.Housekeeping very good and service is good too. A MUST stay if you visit Sri Lanka.

In the pictures it looks great, in reality is EVEN BETTER

My partner and I stayed at Taj for 7 nights just after New Year and this was the highlight of our 17days holidays in Sri Lanka.

The staff were ever so friendly and were willing to help/guide us in anything needed.
The resort is designed beautifuly. Our room was great, right size with plenty of room for our clothes etc, great amenities, but our balcony and view was top class.
Staff for room service also very effiiency and the buffet had a great variety of pretty much everything. Their fresh juices you couldn't have enough. They even had cold coffee like we have in Greece.

The pool was big enough as well as very clean and they had enough beach beds unlikely other places we ve been in Sri Lanka.

Look for Desilva (guest relations). She has a wonderful as well as a real smile, happy to detail anything you need, and her PR skills exceptional. She is a very good representation of Taj chain.

Last but not least, the management when we experienced a serious matter was there for us. Not only paid attention to every single detail and investigated further but also resolved it in no time.

If we ever come back to Sri Lanka, Taj Bentota will be on our list without any doubt.

We had a great 3 nights stay as a family on this awesome Taj property which is right on the beach. We could walk to the beach in 45 seconds. Every staff member at this hotel went out of their way to make our stay memorable. We were a little apprehensive about getting good vegetarian food. But we were pleasantly surprised to find a wide variety of vegetarian foods and Indian food options. Must visit. Pack your bags!
