Bunk down in a bold, sunny room at this Indian Ocean resort on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Colorful turquoise accent walls and bright orange linens complement the resort’s earthy beach scene, while intricately carved headboards add a dash of local charm. Upgrade to an Allure, Temptation or Presidential Suite for a walk-in closet, rainfall shower, and Forest Essentials ayurvedic toiletries. Poolside meals at the Palms include sprawling buffets that mix Western and Sri Lankan specialties, or you can opt for the Sri Lankan lunch platter, a mix of red rice, chicken curry, tempered radish, ambarella chutney, beans in coconut milk, and spicy coconut. Elevate evening dining at SHACK, an open-air seafood spot overlooking the ocean, and retire to Tease for a nightcap — a shot of Sri Lankan Coconut Arrack should do the trick.
In the Area
When you’ve tired of sunbathing on this prime stretch of Bentota Beach, ask the concierge to book a boat ride in the nearby mangrove backwaters or set up a visit to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery. A local family started the conservation project in 1988, and it protects five species of endangered turtle. Spend the evening on a champagne cruise down the Madu River, or arrange for a private dinner in a beach gazebo.
How to Get There
My wife and I have just spent two weeks at this hotel. From the moment that we arrived we have been treated in a very courteous and helpful way by each and every member of staff that we have seen. We were very lucky to have a room on the ground floor with a massive balcony and immediate access to the garden and beach . Our room was facing West so we enjoyed beautiful sunsets every evening from our balcony. We would like to thank everyone at the hotel for making our stay such an enjoyable one. We would be very happy to stay here again. Prior to our arrival I contacted Dimuthu of Dimtours and arranged for him to pick us up from Colombo airport and bring us to the hotel. In addition he arranged a Safari for us. Up at 02.20 and then a three hour drive to the Yaala nature reserve. First we saw a Leopard, we saw hundreds of Deer’s and Water Buffalos, a small family of Elephants, one just a few weeks old ! Birds so vivid in colour that I would struggle to describe them and Crocodiles a’plenty. Add Monkeys and Warthogs, Squirrels and a Mongoose and you can see what an amazing day we had. He also arranged for us to see turtles hatching and we then released them safely into the ocean. Then Whale watching . Dimuthu managed all of these trips and more for us whilst we still had the comfort of our lovely hotel every night. This really was a fantastic holiday !
Stayed here with my wife for 7 nights to end our tour of Sri Lanka. This was a wonderful hotel. We stayed in a suite and it was amazing. First of all it was massive and the two balconies were great and had such a good view of the sea. The staff at the hotel were all so friendly and are a credit to this hotel. We had lunch at the hotel but went out for dinner every night to the local restaurants which were less than a 5 min walk from the hotel. would recommend to anyone
Excellent location with easy access also to the beach (though swimming is not advised due to large waves but good fun). All public facilities including the lobby, bar, restaurant and pool were impressive, clean and well maintained. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Very good range of food on offer and all of a high standard. The bedroom was clean and comfortable and had a sea view. The bathroom however was very small and not of the standard expected of a five star hotel. The decor, including the tiling, was shabby and the toilet fittings were cheap plastic and flimsy. Overall, the bathroom needed total refurbishment.
I have just spent 7 lovely days at this hotel with my husband after spending 8 days touring Sri Lanka, the room was fab, we had sea & garden views, the staff were warm & friendly, there is a wide selection of food. They have tried to accommodate all tastes, if there isn’t anything to your liking ask the staff who will try to help you, there are always chefs walking around. The pool & surrounding area is very well maintained plus there are wonderful views of the beach & gardens where on an evening you can see the beautiful sunsets. We had the most romantic evening for our 25th wedding anniversary on the beach, the staff were so attentive & the setting so idyllic, it was a perfect evening, thank you to all the staff for making our evening so special. We have met some lovely people & have made so many happy memories thank you to all the staff from the lady at reception who welcomed, the room boy, pool staff & not forgetting restaurant staff who all played a part in making our holiday so special x
We stayed at the Taj for two weeks and I honestly do not get how the hotel gets such contrasting reviews!! I am one of the most fussiest people and when I'm paying a lot of money for my holiday I expect a very high standard, the Taj delivered this in every way.
Our room was lovely, no bathroom horror stories to tell, the room was clean, spacious, bed comfortable and we had the most amazing sea view.
We ate at a couple of the restaurants and both were very good, we didn't get to eat in all of them as we met family in the evening who were staying in a guest house just up the road.
Breakfast is vast, the choice endless, I must confess I really did get into the freshly made Dosa's and pickles, I loved them.
The pool is lovely, it does have signs everywhere saying that you cannot reserve a sun bed but unfortunately that was not the case. People are selfish and I did see 6 sun beds together with towels and belongings on with not a person in sight from 7.30am until mid afternoon!!!! This is not on but I'm not sure the pool guys are allowed to touch people's belongings. Still it's no good moaning about it, you just have to play the game, however if we did return to the poole after going out during the day the pool guys would always manage to find us a bed from somewhere. In fact those guys work tirelessly all day long with some pretty demanding guests!!!
If you don't fancy the pool the hotel is situated between two beautiful beaches and are a minutes walk. We had a lot of fun hiring some boogie boards a couple of times as the sea has some good waves.
We often enjoyed the bar in the hotel and it was a meeting point for us and guests we got to know to have a drink at the beginning or end of the evening, they have entertainment (music) most night's, it wasn't my cup of tea but I'm sure lots of people did enjoy it!
Staff from reception to maintenance are lovely and hard working, nothing is too much trouble, they all have a fantastic attitude, you couldn't ask for a better bunch of people to make sure you have a fab holiday.
To sum up the hotel, yes there are area's that are needing maintenance but you see a maintenance team working on the building continuously, you really have to look and it doesn't take away how lovely this hotel, it's location and staff are.
