A six-acre stretch on Anguilla’s Shoal Bay East is the glorious white-sand-and-turquoise-water setting for the first luxury resort on this end of the island. Zemi has the advantage of pristine beaches and fabulous sea views, and the luxury of the 69 rooms and suites encourages some serious lounging. The resort’s design was nominally inspired by the indigenous Arawak people—there are dark wood accents and sand-colored stone everywhere—although the best feature of the spacious and comfortable rooms is the light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead to the balcony, which illuminates the soft neutral palette. The high-quality, cushioned rattan furniture on the spacious balconies (every room has one) is another perk, perfect for reading a book, napping, or staring out to sea. The resort has an award-winning spa, where Anguilla’s only hammam is built in a 300-year-old Thai house, and two restaurants, plus a sand-floored cocktail bar and a tasting room that specializes in single-origin rums.
In the Area
With the resort’s fabulous pools and spectacular patch of beach, you’d be forgiven for never leaving, but there’s still plenty to do nearby. There are boat excursions to other islands like St. Barts, snorkeling around the coral reef and other water sports organized by the Shoal Bay Beach Club, plus hiking trails that span the island. Stroll down the beach to Gwen’s Reggae Bar and Grill, a beach bar known for Caribbean staples like barbecued ribs, best washed down by a rum punch. History buff? Check out nearby archeological sites such as Big Spring and Fountain Caverns, home to remnants of ancient Taino groups, or learn more about Anguilla’s history at the Heritage Collection Museum.
How to Get There
Visited the restaurant on the beach on a sunny day. Nice seating at Shoal Bay East. Special lunch menu. Good seating and good food. More expensive then the other restaurants at the beach, but ok, it is a new and more expensive venue.
Zemi has it all — a great location, beautiful facilities, friendly staff, on a gorgeous beach. We spent 9 nights at Zemi and could have stayed longer, it was that great. Here’s more detail on specific areas:
BEACH — about 8/10 of a mile (longer if you’re willing to wade into the ocean to get around some driftwood.) mostly fine, soft sand tho it’s coarse in areas. Beach has a bit of a slant, which can make walking difficult but we got used to it. Drop-off from beach is steep. You’re in deep water quickly. It’s more gradual further down the beach and frankly the swimming is better there. Sunsets were spectacular. Saw a full rainbow twice. Lots of birds diving for fish.
ROOM — Loved ours. 415. Large, roomy, comfy,. Nice deck overlooking the ocean. You see the resort’s roofs in the foreground but still a great view. And since 415 is on the end of Building 4 we could see all the way down the beach to the east.
STAFF — Zemi runs a good operation. Everyone seems happy to be there and are very nice and accommodating to guests. Beach team were especially helpful.
FOOD — We ate the majority of our meals at Zemi. The breakfast is included and it’s terrific. Everything from custom omelets to smoked salmon to fruit, cereal, meats, cheeses. Dinners were a bit uneven and the service isn’t fantastic but everything is down with a smile and you’re on vacation so slow service isn’t a big deal. Besides you’re sitting literally ON the beach. The setting for the main restaurant, 20 Knots, cannot be beat!
SPA — Had a 90-min massage that was great. The spa facility is impressive.
GYM — Excellent. Plenty of cardio and weights. All in great shape. One note, however. The website and reviews mention fitness classes but that’s out of date. The only classes offered when we were there were one-hour yoga classes on Tues and Thur morning. I took those and liked them but was expecting more of a fitness element to the resort, based on its website. That said, the gym is great so you can get your exercise in regardless. And there’s always walking the beach!
POOLS — We didn’t use the pools but there is one in the main part of the resort that is absolutely goregous and heated and another up higher that is not heated (and it doesn’t have a view of the ocean.)
GROUNDS — Zemi is a beautiful property. Very well landscaped and well tended. It’s lush and laid out nicely. Built into a hill with the restaurants and main guest areas on the beach and the buildings with the rooms up above. So if walking up a hill is an issue for you, ask for a room closer to the beach.
We just loved this place. We booked again just three weeks, one day after we were back home after our recent stay in December. Last June I had been looking for a special place for our anniversary that we hadn’t been to before. We have traveled to the Caribbean about twice a year for the past 2 decades, so I really wanted some place with a “wow” factor. We had been to Anguilla once before, stayed at the old Sonesta. Anguilla really wasn’t on our radar as major airlines have dropped Anguilla from their schedules. I would have to say that Zemi found us. Having read numerous travel magazines, the name Zemi kept popping up as a really good place to stay. Not only did we fall in love with Zemi, we fell in love with Anguilla. Yes, it is harder to get there than many other islands, but it is so much worth the extra effort.
Zemi offers a place to relax in a picture- perfect atmosphere. The tropical vegetation, the pools, the rooms, and the long wide beach are all just stunning. If you visit the website, you’ll see it all. No smoke and mirrors. My favorite place, aside from the beach, of course, was the Tranquility Pool. Maybe I shouldn’t mention this, as some days I had it all to myself. It is not ocean view, but rather surrounded by vegetation. It is an adults’ only pool and not heated. Not a problem for me. A lap pool is also located there. Soft music played; It was like being in a spa. Heaven!
As many others have noted, the staff is always there to anticipate your needs. Everyone is pleasant and seems genuinely happy that you have chosen Zemi to be your home away from home. We originally had thought of a place w/kitchen facilities, but after this trip, decided that we really didn’t need it. Zemi offers such an expansive breakfast buffet that we either shared lunch and had dinner or we combined a meal as lunch/dinner. The offerings vary, but vegetarians should know that they will have no problem here. Even a numerous selection of grilled vegetables is offered.
Zemi is located, IMO, at one end of the best locations in Anguilla, and the Caribbean, for that matter, Shoal Bay East. The beach is gorgeous. A number of cafes/bars are located along the beach and very walkable from Zemi. We did rent a car for the week, glad we did, as it allowed us to explore the island and dine at other restaurants. Probably next time we’ll rent the car for fewer days as we really enjoyed just lounging at Zemi and enjoying the pools and the beach.
I’d like to add this: We were amazed at Anguilla’s recovery from the hurricanes of 2017. We drove around the island a few times and saw ONE tarp. You would never know there had been a hurricane that had passed through and had caused massive devastation to the island.(Yes, we listened to their stories). It is a tribute to the island’s residents that the recovery has been so quick. You could not help but feel the pulse of the people of Anguilla- that they are stronger from what they have gone through. They all pulled together to put Anguilla back together again, and they are proud of their efforts.
It was an amazing vacation, still think about it often, and can’t wait to go back to Zemi and the people of Anguilla.
My husband and I decided to take a trip to Shoal Bay since it was rated one of the top beaches in the world. We choose Zemi Beach because of the great reviews. I am happy to say the hotel reviews were accurate. The staff is extremely helpful and attentive. They work hard and ensure each guests is well take care of at the restaurants, pool, beach and spa.
The hotel is beautifully decorated and the attention to detail is refreshing. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to relax and decompress.
Breathtakingly beautiful spot. Zemi Beach House cannot be beaten for a relaxing vacation. Happiness is waking up to those ocean views. Zemi Beach house has everything to offer: pools, spa, boutique, gym, restaurants (one right on the beach) and a friendly helpful staff who make every effort to ensure a memorable vacation. You will love everything about Zemi House.
