Unique Victorian

This is a beautiful home on the edge of town - a nice walk from the plaza. Much of the common rooms and bedrooms are decorated with intricate and unique wallpaper patterns that play off of some of the original details and moldings in the home. There’s also a large porch and nice gardens to enjoy. The hosts served a nice breakfast and also an evening wine and cheese. The guests were all very impressed - and happy. We had an upstairs bedroom that was quiet and comfortable. All the rooms have their own bathrooms.

I only have amazing things to say about the Calderwood Inn. Five star, first class service from the moment you walk in the door. I had never stayed at a B&B before however I am now a convert and will definitely be back! Delicious breakfast, beautiful, CLEAN, rooms, and super friendly staff. Thank you so much!!

We booked due to the reviews and were not disappointed. We arrived mid morning and luckily our rooms were ready so we were able to leave our bags and go off wine tasting. We had two large rooms ( daughter travelling with us) ground floor, accessed outside and both were very good, really comfortable beds, big TV’s, A/C that worked, and large shower and toilet - very different to some of the reviews of rooms in the main part of the house. Lovely outside seating area by each room, although not clean from leaves on the seats. Wine offered at set time in the evening which we had on the pretty veranda on the swing chair. Nice touch in the morning with a pretty good cooked brekkie and it was a set time as well to encourage guests to meet and talk and manager joined to take part - although she did not eat. All good, however, the style of the house is ‘quaint’ read, old fashioned even tired and looks like your nan lives there. Friendly staff and the offer of free tasting at their own wineries, although we did not use them so can’t comment. Also had bikes to use if that way inclined

It's the little things that they just didn't get right

I waited a few weeks before writing this because I wanted to really think it through. Sorry this is long - but I wanted to explain everything that we experienced. My husband and I travel frequently, and love saying in B&Bs when we can. To say we were disappointed in this one is an understatement. First, the things we loved: the location, the garden, the happy hour and did I mention the location? It's within walking distance of the little town of Healdsburg, where you can shop, eat, and just hang out. Very cool little town that I would definitely like to spend more time in. We loved that they had a garden in the back with chickens for fresh eggs. Our room was clean, which is always a bonus. Oh, and the happy hour was fantastic - it said only one glass of wine was included in our reservation but that definitely wasn't the case. It also said that happy hour was only on the night you check in, but that wasn't the case either.

Now the bad: First, when we got there, we dragged all of our luggage up to the front door, only to find out that you check in at the back door. We went to the back door, which was locked, so we rang the bell. Nothing. We rang it again. Nothing again. Finally my husband went over to the kitchen door and got the attention of someone working, who came out to check us in. We're used to B&B check-ins lasting a few minutes - with a quick tour of the house/property and suggestions on things to do (for instance, we saw bikes in the garage that we assume were for guest use). Our check in was literally, "here is your key, there is your room, happy hour starts in a half hour." Underwhelming, to say the least. But if that was the worst experience, we would have been fine.

Our room had a little porch area which seemed really nice - until we got out there and found that it hadn't been swept in probably weeks. We were there in the spring and there was pollen coated on everything. My husband couldn't sit out there because it was triggering his allergies, which aren't usually a problem for him (thankfully there is a drug store about a block away that we walked to to get him allergy meds). I used to work for a hotel and we would have made a point to clean that porch every day - but not here. It was unusable.

Probably my biggest complaint was with the service. Breakfast is at 9:00. That isn't unusual. However, coffee wasn't ready until about 8:45. Really? How hard is it to make coffee earlier than 8:45? We got up at about 7:00 and had to wait almost 2 hours for coffee. One morning, I wanted tea and when the hot water wasn't ready at 8:45, I asked the staff if I could get some, and was told in a very rude way "it'll only take a minute for it to be ready." When I responded, "oh, only a minute?" because I was surprised that the entire carafe could heat up in a minute, he responded (again, quite rudely), "well a few minutes then." Absolutely appalling to treat guests paying hundreds of dollars a night this way. It would have been as simple as "can I put a mug of water in the microwave for you?"

The breakfast itself was good, but not great. On day one, we had yogurt & berries and an egg hash that was fresh and very good with bacon. But there was no bread or pastries served with it. Every B&B I've stayed in loves its baked goods, so I was expecting more. The second morning did have pastries (it was a Sunday), so maybe it's only on certain days of the week? Odd, in my opinion. In addition, on the second day, the man working asked one half of the table "do we have any vegetarians here because the breakfast has meat mixed in it and we'll leave it out if you don't want it." The other half of the table was talking and obviously didn't hear him - so my husband said "you may want to say that again to the other side of the table" to which he turned around and walked back into the kitchen. We noticed several people at the other end of the table picking the meat out of their breakfast.

Okay, so overall, my husband and I agree that while the location is great, and the house itself is cool (although starting to look a little run down in spots), it's the little things that were missing from our stay there. When you spend hundreds of dollars a night on a room, you expect a certain level of service. The service was lacking (except for the happy hour), the staff was rude, and they absolutely did not go above and beyond for their guests. I wish I had better things to say, but we won't be going back.
