One of Crete’s more upscale resort destinations, with a growing international reputation, Elounda boasts Blue Flag beaches, crystal-clear waters and an array of quality restaurants, tavernas and shops. It’s fast becoming a playground for the giltterati; famous visitors include Leonardo DiCaprio, U2 and Lady Gaga.
Sitting like a gleaming white beacon on a peaceful hillside just outside the town and boasting lovely sea views over silvery olive groves, Elounda Krini Hotel is a perfect fit for the area. It’s recently undergone a complete renovation and exudes an intimate, boutique feel. Rooms are spread over two buildings, and you can relax on your own balcony and take in the panoramic vista of the bay and the mountains.
There’s a generously proportioned swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers and and umbrellas. If you prefer a dip in the sea, it’s only a short stroll down to a small, unspoiled beach. A short walk along a coastal path will take you into town, where you can pick and choose between restaurants and tavernas. The uninhabited island of Spinalonga sits across the water from Elounda, and there are regular boat trips to explore its beaches and historic fortress.
Newly renovated Superior rooms are tastefully furnished, with clean white decor. Roomy private balconies have beautiful views over the olive trees, toward a lagoon and the sea beyond.
The restaurant offers great spread of a buffet breakfast, with Greek yogurt, eggs, freshly squeezed orange juice and more. Lunch is served at your table, with traditional favorites like moussaka and Greek salad. Dinner comes in a buffet form, with daily changing dishes.
The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Elounda, in a quiet location near the beach, overlooking the calm blue Gulf of Mirabello and Spinalonga island. The ruins of the ancient town of Olous lie close by, and you can also visit the Basilicas of Poros and view its fabulous mosaic, and see exquisite white marble at Koloktha. The larger resort of Agios Nikolaos sits six miles to the south and shows off a good entertainment scene, including a theatre and cinema, plus lively nightlife. Excursions can easily be made to Latos and Gournia archaeological site.
How to Get There
A great little hotel with excellent staff - so helpful, polite and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. We had a fair size room with an extra kitchen area which added space, but the shower room was really a little small. Still having everything needed though, including a supply of toiletries. Good size balcony with adequate furniture and lovely views of olive groves, mountain and Spinalonga sitting in the sea. Excellent air-con so quiet it can be left on all night if necessary. The fruit and wine on arrival together with the leaving gift was a thoughtful, un-expected surprise. Slightly on the edge of the town, but a good stroll for the lovely little scruffy beach nearby and a good distance for walking off the evening meal! The ferry to visit Spinalonga is a definite must, but take a ferry that allows plenty of time to wander around as an hour is not enough to see this fascinating place. Would definitely like to return and our only regret is that we forgot to leave our usual tip for our lady cleaner - sorry!!
Road trip around Crete..this was a great spot for us, convenient to the best of this region, with a spacious room with balcony that overlooked an olive grove with the deep blue sea in the distance..clean, comfortable with basic breakfast.
Great budget hotel. Staff were very friendly and always willing to help you. Didn't have the breakfast but we ate dinner here a few nights and the food was always lovely and reasonably priced. The pool and sunbeds were always available, but it was September. Rooms were a good size, the bathroom was a little on the small side and the pillows were a bit too chunky but it was ok for a week's stay. It was just a short walk to the harbour, lots of restaurants and the boat to Spingalonga. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
