One of the world’s most famous hotels, operating since 1887 in high colonial style
There’s something undeniably romantic about a grand old colonial hotel, and few hotels are grander than Raffles, built in 1887 and retaining all its stateliness even while modernizing. A turban-wearing Sikh doorman escorts guests through a wrought-iron portico into a lobby that’s seas of marble floor and sweeping dark central staircase. The suites are in the historic parts of the building and open onto courtyards full of tall trees and frangipani—it’s dreamy to rest in your sitting area and watch and listen to a tropical rainstorm on the leaves.
In the Area
Retail therapy is serious business in Singapore, and the hotel is located near several shopping districts. The mile-long Orchard Road is home to thousands of retail outlets and major malls. More offbeat shopping can be found on Arab Street in Kampong Glam, where merchants sell camel skin bags, cloisonné boxes, and bolts of colorful fabric. Chinatown is home to great, inexpensive restaurants, especially at the Smith Street Hawker Centre.
