How to Get There
We went to Singapore for our 25th Anniversary and stayed in the Valley Wing at the Shangri-La Hotel and wasn't dissapointed. It is the most beautiful relaxing hotel with orchids everywhere. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, the staff are friendly and welcoming and can't do enough to make your stay special. We didn't try any of the restaurants there but really enjoyed the canapes. The breakfast was wonderful with varied things to eat you could have whatever you wanted and on saying that I would think the restaurant's food would be just as excellent. We also has a few Singapore Slings of course and again you could have those with varying degrees of alcohol you only had to ask. The outside area was a delight and the swimming pool was beautiful and great for all ages being open until 8pm at night so great at that time and early in the morning for a peaceful swim. Singapore itself is the most clean and organised city and everyone should go if they get a chance.
One would never say the buildings are over 50 years old. The architecture and decor are fresh and inviting. Maintenance levels are remarkable.
We stayed in the Valley Wing section of the hotel and the room amenities were superb. The bedside pedastal provided as usual a bible and refreshing the teachings of Budda however a copy of the Quran was missed.
My wife developed a reaction to the jasmin fragranced bath soaps and housekeeping without question immediately replaced with an alternate fragrance.
Of note on checking-in the gentleman at the front desk Mr Yong Long was quick in upselling us to the better appointed Horizon Club package.
Will I return to the hotel, a resounding ...Yes!
Stayed 3 nights (21-May check-in) in their Valley Wing which is supposed to be the best among the 3 Wings.
Conclusion: I would certainly look around other hotels the next time I visited Singapore.
This review is long as I mentioned both pros and cons in different areas. For the expired drink, I reported to the front desk manager when I checked out on 24-May and provided him my room number. He promised to file my case, so I wonder why there was no response from the hotel.
The room is spacious and classic although some decor a bit dated. Bed and pillow are very very comfortable. Nespresso, branded toiletry, turndown service were all good. Air-cond was too cold although I adjusted to 25 degree.
Services in general was of very high quality especially Raja in the Valley Wing Champagne bar whose service was attentive and warm. It is a big contrast (& surprise) to meeting a couple of staff on different dates not greeting / smiling (let alone give way as they walked in the middle) on the pathway connecting the Valley Wing and Tower Wing.
Very nice ambience in the Summit Room for breakfast. The Valley Wing soft boiled egg was very good. Would be better if not allowing children under certain age as it spoilt the quiet morning e.g. there was this 2-3 years old boy yelling and his mom followed him around their table attempting to feed him.
Tried both Valley Wing club and Horizon club cocktail hour. Drink offered at Valley Wing was of higher quality. We were being served by staff in the Valley Wing vs self serve in the horizon club. However, the canapés in the Horizon room is much much better than that in the Valley Wing (at least for 22-May). Those canapés in the Valley Wing was very wrong and tasted awful (I seldom used this word in my review but could not find a substitution). Perhaps the usual chef was on leave? as the canapés for the following date (23-May) improved.
Complimentary mini-bar offered a good range of non-alcoholic drink. I think the 4 cans of beers should be complimentary as well. Such services is offered by a number of lower end hotels. Those 4 cans of beer do not cost much but would impress the guests a lot better as this Wing was meant to be more prestige. Also a bit surprise fruit basket is not re-filled daily.
Not enough sockets in the room for nowadays travellers (eg only one side of the bed had socket and no USB plug). Also got frustrated with their in-room audio player after trying 15min. So I rang Services for 2 issues (1) to setup extension cord for my husband’s C-pan which power cord hang over my head the first night I checked-in (2) to resolve the audio player although I followed all card instructions.
The Service staff did a good job as he was quick to respond and setup the extension cord for me. He then contacted a second staff for the audio player. Later on, we were told (i) the player’s power cord was not connected, (ii) a player cable connecting to the TV was missing, (iii) and the card instructions were outdated (waste of my 15 min trying to set it up!)
My worst experience was to finding out I drank a can of EXPIRED tonic water from my room’s mini bar on the evening (23-May) before checking out on 24-May. I had a few big sips then found it tasted a bit strange.
Checked the bottom and surprise to read it should be consumed in early May!! The first thing on my mind was “OMG! Expired drink! in Shangri-la! and in Valley Wing!” This was totally unexpected and unacceptable!!
I was quite worry as I had stomach problem and food allergy. I did not alarm hotel manager since at that moment I did not feel unwell physically. However, I was psychologically very disturbed feeling that strange taste all the time! My husband monitored my situation through out the night to see if I was feeling alright. So both of us did not sleep well but we were checking out the next morning, so need to wake up earlier than usual.
I reported this incident (with the tonic water can) to the Valley Wing reception before checking out. A front desk manager (I lost his business card) handled my case with care and asked my room number. He promised to submit report for this case which he said he was embarrassed about. He then offered us complementary Taxi to the airport which was nice of him but nothing compared to what my husband and I went through the previous night.
A grand hotel at city heart of Singapore with lots of amenities. The hotel complex is just colossal. Swimming pool, Gym, Cafe, restaurants all are ready serve the its clients 7/24 with full of satisfaction. Staffs are exceptionally professional, friendly & smart. I love to be there many more times.
Just came back from a weeks stay in this beautiful hotel. We booked a room in the Tower Wing and got upgraded to one of the Junior Suite which a larger room, with a huge couch and table, equipped also a complete kitchen, cook top, microwave etc. It was was beautiful.
We also had access to their Horizon Lounge, where you have a private check in and check out, breakfast, afternoon tea and canapes and cocktails in the evening.
Being a guest of the hotel for a week we managed to try all the restaurants and outlets!
Nami - Japanese Restaurant - delicious authentic japanese food but i found it quite pricey!
Origin -Our favorite! We dined here 3 times! Must try the beef platter & seafood platter! Service here was impeccable!
Waterfall - Italian, and also another favorite! We dined here 3 times too! Buffet antipasto lunch is amazing! Service also great! More casual resto as its by the pool!
The Line - Buffet Resto, where we had breakfast on some days! Wide range of choices. We also had lunch here which was full on amazing too! They do get busy on the weekends though!
Shang Palace - Chinese Fine dining restaurant - this was our least fave. maybe we ordered the wrong thing? anyway service is also great!
Lobby Lounge - Authentic singaporean buffet was amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Katrina from the lounge provided exceptional service!
They also have a kids centre called BUDS which is great if you have kids travelling with you
I think thats about it. We had an amazing stay and we will definitely be back.
The hotel is also a short walk from Orchard road, and the provide a shuttle service too.
Overall, great stay and hands down to the entire Shangrila Team!
