Cambodian Riviera escape with temple-like villas, locally inspired spa treatments, and Khmer cooking classes

The Lowdown

Cambodia’s southern archipelago—a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path alternative to neighboring Thailand’s boisterous beaches—is the backdrop for Alila’s exquisite Cambodian debut. Here, you’ll find collection of 13 teak villas and gunmetal gray cubic buildings housing 50 jungle-chic guest rooms, which are done up with hardwood floors, ikat cushions, and volcanic stone accents, though it’s the massive bay windows with unbeatable views that bring the ultimate indoor-outdoor double punch. Avocado-based hair treatments and Balinese massages await at the five-room spa, and the pampering continues at the palm-flanked infinity pool equipped with at-the-ready attendants. When hunger strikes, head to Horizon, whose cosmopolitan breakfast atmosphere (huevos rancheros, baklava) transforms into a sleek French fusion scene in the evening hours, offering an inventive edible ode to the country’s colonial past.

In the Area

You’re a 10-minute boat-ride from Sihanoukville airport (there are daily direct flights between Siem Reap and Sihanoukville) and a four-hour drive from the capital city of Phnom Penh—the hotel can provide a vehicle for up to four guests for a fee. Despite the property’s many amenities, including an outdoor movie theater, organic garden, and yoga studio, the staff can help you organize a day-trip to any of the neighboring isles or the mainland, Ream, where you’ll find a colonial shophouse, fish markets, and an eye-catching pagoda that’s considered an important center for Cambodia’s spiritual traditions.

Stunning Island
Reviewed 1 week ago

The journey starts here at a lovely building where you are greeted with drinks, towels and beautiful views whilst they check you in whilst loading your luggage into the boat.

Then a lovely boat journey across to the island, again with drinks and gorgeous views of other islands.

Then the same treatment when arriving to the island and being shown the grounds.

We had a garden villa but were upgraded to a beach villa which we were very happy about as we could literally run to the beach straight from our villa and see the beach from our bed.

It was just so beautiful and relaxing staying here as it’s very quiet and peaceful.

The food here was a real highlight for us, the nachos at the beach but were very tasty and the gnocchi from the vegetarian menu was crazy good! We also loved the bread and tapenades that were brought over before, we couldn’t get enough of them we had to ask for more. The breakfast is also very good!

Some other reviews have made notes about the rubbish that washes up on the beach. I think this is something that the hotel cannot constantly deal with it and it really says more about the atrocious state the ocean is from the amount of plastic that washes up. But they do make an effort to clean this up more than twice daily but it is a never ending job. With every wave that comes a bit of plastic appears, it’s sad to see what we keep doing to the ocean.

All the staff were very friendly and went out of their way for us. We wanted to go kayaking and a lovely girl helped us with this and brought us some coconut water when we had come back from a lovely kayak along the beach.

One comment would be that the sliding doors within the villa weren’t very good. We noticed upon our second lizard coming in the room that there were various holes along the sliding doors which were big enough for the lizards to climb through, so we then stuffed those up with some tissue to stop the lizards coming back in.

Also the coral is very pretty but we found it very difficult to get out to see it due to wearing flippers and there being rocks everywhere. I would recommend having sea shoes instead of flippers and maybe building a floating jetty down by the rocks so that you could jump into the water and swim to the coral rather than trying to climb over it.

We really did have such an amazing time here and would love to visit again as it was so relaxing, gorgeous and tasty!

A beautiful island with room for service improvement

We spent a long weekend at Alila and the place is beautiful : aired, full of light with big spaces and a huge beach!
Food was nice and diversified but although we mentioned we were coming with a kid, no cot was provided in the room and with that space and so many guests coming with their families we were expecting a kid club or activities for children but nothing is dedicated to it which was disappointing.

What a great Resort

We stayed 4 nights with my family on this paradise island, we wished we could extend our trip as we were like in a dream! The staff there is so lovely, always ready to help and assist any of our requests with a big smile on their faces, that was truly a pleasure to get to know them. We spent most of our time tanning and swimming at the gorgeous 1.2 km beach and at their huge pool, but we did also experience the sunset cruise, a lifetime experience not to be missed. Alila Koh Russey is a real jewel, the architecture, the team, the food, the spa treatments and the ambience will amaze you. Hope we can go back there one day and try the numerous activities that they propose such as fishing, snorkeling, pagodas visits, and many more.... Big up Alila!
