Cambodian Riviera escape with temple-like villas, locally inspired spa treatments, and Khmer cooking classes
Cambodia’s southern archipelago—a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path alternative to neighboring Thailand’s boisterous beaches—is the backdrop for Alila’s exquisite Cambodian debut. Here, you’ll find collection of 13 teak villas and gunmetal gray cubic buildings housing 50 jungle-chic guest rooms, which are done up with hardwood floors, ikat cushions, and volcanic stone accents, though it’s the massive bay windows with unbeatable views that bring the ultimate indoor-outdoor double punch. Avocado-based hair treatments and Balinese massages await at the five-room spa, and the pampering continues at the palm-flanked infinity pool equipped with at-the-ready attendants. When hunger strikes, head to Horizon, whose cosmopolitan breakfast atmosphere (huevos rancheros, baklava) transforms into a sleek French fusion scene in the evening hours, offering an inventive edible ode to the country’s colonial past.
In the Area
You’re a 10-minute boat-ride from Sihanoukville airport (there are daily direct flights between Siem Reap and Sihanoukville) and a four-hour drive from the capital city of Phnom Penh—the hotel can provide a vehicle for up to four guests for a fee. Despite the property’s many amenities, including an outdoor movie theater, organic garden, and yoga studio, the staff can help you organize a day-trip to any of the neighboring isles or the mainland, Ream, where you’ll find a colonial shophouse, fish markets, and an eye-catching pagoda that’s considered an important center for Cambodia’s spiritual traditions.
How to Get There
We DId this whole trip primarily hoping to be treated to a wonderful stay at this enchanting ecological escape on a private island off the Cambodian Riviera. And boy oh boy! The place totally live up to its expectations - despite having been hit by heavy monsoon rains and torrential downpours. Framed between Untouched Beaches on one side and lush green forest on the other side, this place is an architectural art gallery in an island. The Impressive Infinity Pool - that apparently mimics the outline of Angkor Wat - is an aqua sanctuary you will not feel like getting out of. The Hammocks by the beach with a million dollar view of the Bewitching Bay might become your retreat for the whole stay. And they get a strong competition from the lovely Balcony in the room with Spectacular views of the wild sea and the chilled-out Beach Shack bar to grab your undivided attention . Overall, the place was such a delight, that even the Roller Coaster speed boat ride through super choppy waters -that felt like River rafting over class 4 rapids - was absolutely worth it!
LOCATION: Excellent location close to the mainland. Door to Door from Sihanoukville airport to the REsort(Including a 10 minute speed boat ride) just takes 20 minutes! That is faster than getting into Sihanoukville town itself! So great access from the airport.
DINE + DRINK: Though they have multiple outlets to drink and dine, Unfortunately when we went they were running very thin and depending on just one main restaurant(HORIZON) for pretty much everything including dinner, Lunch and Breakfast. The BEACH SHACK was pretty cool - right on the beach - but their kitchen was busted from the rain and so no food there! They were serving only drinks and that too only till 6 PM! The Horizon restaurant did compensate for it more than enough! Fantastic local and international food (including KHMER cuisine) at very affordable prices - which is something thats not common at such luxury resorts that try adn milk everything they can from ‘Captive’ guests. They even have a wonderful selection of Wines and full range of cocktails that dont bore a hole through your wallet
ROOM: We stayed in 216 - which is a BEACH PAVILLION Room- and this review is based on that; VIEW: Mind blowing view of the beach and greenery, from the Lovely huge BALCONY and from the bed itself!!!; SIZE: Very spacious room; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part to put me to sleep; BATHROOM: Romantic huge Rain shower with a lovely view of the Jungle outside through the glass door that could be opened; TOILETRIES: lovely spa quality Cosmetics
FACILITIES: Compact Gym with a basic range of weights and Cardio machines and a full range or KETTLEBells. They also have a sweet YOGA studio! The INFINITY Pool is massive and almost olympic length and comes with a lovely view of the beach and the ocean.
SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all my needs with a smile and made us feel pampered and well taken care of. Special Shout out to the folks in HORIZON Restaurant.
HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE: Free high speed Wi-Fi that works well all over the property. Big Plasma TV screen dishing out dozens of channels spanning sports, news, music, movies and a wide variety of entertainment in multiple languages
I was there with my husband to celebrated our 3rd anniversary. I’m impressed by the warm welcome of the staff since I arrived at the airport. We took a ride to their welcome center (approx 10 mins) then another boat ride to the island (10-15 mins). The resort is lovely and stunning, I love their long sandy beach, team members are super friendly and always there to assist with any requests with a big smile on their faces. The spa treatment was fantastic. The food is absolutely delicious. We enjoyed every single meals while we were there. The resort also offers numerous of activities. Such a perfect getaway place for couples or honeymooner.
Overall stay was pleasant, but there's plenty of room for improvement on the customer service as they lack, anticipation. The bath tub was not clean either and the stopper wasn't working. Not much of food variety. But it's a good place for a short trip where you wanted to get out of city life and enjoy the breeze of sea in woods. Place wise, it's amazing.
