How to Get There
I always stay at the langham when traveling to shanghai for work. They have excellent service, clean and well sized rooms, and the location is perfect for access to restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
Both the room and bathroom is large and luxurious. The view is top notch over Xintiandi with a perfect central location. The service was just what I needed everyone was so helpful with calling taxis and helping with didi. Nice to sit in the lobby for breakfast and afternoon tea. Located in such a perfect spot making it so easy to get around and the staff and service is impeccable. Thank you Langham.
I opted to stay at this hotel while on a business trip to Shanghai; the draw was the Langham brand and the location adjacent to Xintiandi.
Regretfully after 3 nights and 4 days of experiencing various services at this hotel, I left with the conclusion that the only good aspect was its location and to a certain extent the room which was spacious and rather well appointed (although a tad dated).
Internet service throughout the property (lobby area and in the room in particular) was dismally poor and trying to complain to the staff (if they understood English) led to only responses like "yes sir, we know that internet is very poor in the lobby" to "there is nothing I can do to make the connection better in the room" leading to frustration and wasted time for work.
F&B quality at the lobby restaurant and tea lounge was also very disappointing despite highly inflated prices, offering very little value. Again, trying to provide feedback to the staff only led to "deer in the headlights" looks and zero efforts at service recovery.
English language proficiency was also very low and the staff in the front of house all wear earpieces with hanging cords, which I assume was to improve their internal communication, however despite this 'tool" the actual service delivery levels firmed up my conviction that despite the unsightly and cumbersome earpiece gimmick, it was not yielding any results.
Management presence was minimal and those foreign managers who I did manage to see occasionally strutting (mainly in the lobby) were more interested in flirting with the staff and hostesses rather than engaging with the guests.
All in all a 4 out of 10 if I would have to rate this hotel; definitely will not frequenting it again in the future specially given the number of competing hotels in Shanghai at the US$200 + range (without breakfast).
Beautiful hotel, great service, and amazing location. My only issue is when I was checking out I sat in the lobby to wait for my car, there was a woman who walked in and sat down right next to me and started watching a TV show on her phone on speaker, VERY VERY loudly. A few people (including me) looked at her direction feeling disturbed, there was a lot of high pitch ringing in her show (again LOUDLY) that was making me really anxious. I wish a staff could have said something maybe gently suggest that she turn down the volume just a little.
Other than this we had a overall pleasant stay.
Arranged ahead of time for an airport pickup which was a great introduction to the excellent service you can expect from the hotel. Upon arrival, staff greeted us at the car and took us to our upgraded room, thanks to FHR and availability, for check-in. The room was spacious, perfectly appointed and designed, enormous bathroom as well. Fast and reliable Wifi. Nespresso in room. We slept so well in a super comfortable bed, in this exceptionally quiet room. We enjoyed delicious breakfasts with an extensive buffet, greeted personally by name by staff each morning. The staff really make you feel special, every person we encountered was personable, professional, and welcoming. Enjoyed buffet dinner the first night as well as a dining at their outstanding Chinese (Cantonese I believe) one evening as well, service and meal were flawless and highly recommend. The Concierge was so helpful in arranging a tour and with other recommendations. The Xintiandi area is fantastic to explore - with great shops and restaurants and super quaint to just explore; and with close proximity to exploring all Shanghai has to offer. Our only regret is we only stayed 3 nights, we can't wait to return for a longer stay and look forward to exploring other Langham properties in our travels.
