How to Get There
I found this place to be a real disappointment especially given the standard of reviews here which, having visited the place, do not in my opinion reflect what I found on the ground. Especially at USD 500++ per night!
You need to check the level of experience of the reviewers who have given solid reviews – or maybe they are just very easily impressed.
Furthermore I accept it looked like a bargain but honestly in terms of value it really wasn’t so don’t be fooled.
I have spoken to the management at some length (as I always do when I’m going to post a bad review) and they are aware that I am going to write a negative review. I don’t think they would argue that this is fair comment, albeit my personal opinion. They gave us some nice canapes and a bottle of prosecco to say sorry - but no visit from the GM though although there will probably be a canned "we're sorry and we'll try to do better" from him in response to this review - Johannnes you never even bothered to call when we were there so don't bother!
The first thing you need to know is that it is on the (admittedly lovely) public beach of Beau Vallon along with quite a few other hotels of, how shall I put it, “mixed” quality. At this point I should point out that all beaches in the Seychelles are public…but some are harder to get to than others (tips hat to Four Seasons).
Let me start with the more positive aspects…
We were happily greeted by the butler assigned to our room, Leon, who was very supportive and delivered an excellent service from the first to the last. The room service chef and service were second to none – really – among the best in the world – speedy, happy and pleasant and their octopus curry was delicious!
The resort is beautifully landscaped and if you like gardens I have to say that these are amongst the nicest hotel gardens I have been in, particularly at night. If however you are looking for a beach experience then the gardens won’t be the main attraction.
We booked a beach villa with a private pool which was very nice but, given the public nature of the beach does not give quite the level of privacy that one might hope for. The room is a little crowded in its furnishings but has a useful table for working at, a lovely bathroom (although the toilet is quite whiffy) and outdoor shower as well as two outdoor seating areas and a very comfortable bed.
The gym is very well equipped with modern Life Fitness equipment (a personal favourite) and a pleasant aspect with water and fresh towels - it was not at all crowded.
So it’s a nice place and it’s a nice room so why not a rave review?
And now the negative aspects, which put a huge damper on our holiday…
Firstly, let’s start (and maybe finish) with...
Breakfast - the food itself was mediocre – not good variety, not good quality – and the birds seem to enjoy the fruits, breads and nuts more than the guests. Certainly I expected much much more from a "5 star" facility in this sort of destination. However, it’s the service that really lets the place down – miserable faces all round and an overall sense of incompetence and poor management. I cannot remember the last time I had to try to teach the egg station the difference between scrambled, runny eggs with a crust and an omelette – this was a bit of a surprise but the egg station wasn’t terribly interested in listening - so that put paid to my eggs. I had to clear my table myself (twice) even though it was not very busy at the time. When my girlfriend thanked the staff for giving her a cup of coffee, she was given an offensive smirk. In any event I feel sure that the hotel could run to a second coffee machine to stop the caffeine queues that built up at busy times. In conclusion - not a great way to start the day…
Lunch – we went to the much vaunted “Ripples” poolside restaurant and, assailed by the pesky birds on all sides hoped for a pleasant poolside snack. We asked what was good and were assured that the chicken shawarma and the special curry of the day - beef – was the way to go. When it arrived well, the only thing I can describe it is in the the same way that I described it to the management – inedible. We pecked at it and gave the in meal feedback to the waitress as “it’s really not very good” and despite being offered an alternative which we declined and not eating the meal we were not offered a refund/no charge until further complaints to the Front of House Manager.
Tea - We abandoned ship and walked up the beach to the very nice Boathouse restaurant [nothing to do with the hotel just a top tip] at the end of the beach for drinks - solid cocktails served by a charming Seychellois bartender. Having eaten lunch there before, we knew the food was very tasty and the service was first rate. Sadly however lunch stopped at 4 and dinner (an excellent buffet by all accounts) did not start until 730 so we fell into the gap.
Dinner – desperate (and quite hungry by this stage) we resorted to bar food at the 1502 lobby bar – a burger – what could possibly go wrong? Do you know what - to be honest I think Murphy’s Law had kicked in by this stage – we ordered and after about 45 minutes the chef came out looking for someone to deliver the burger – it arrived by bartender 5 minutes later but stone cold – we sent it back – the meal re-arrived with hot refried chips but a stone cold burger and a bun by that time soaked in fat. Clearly they couldn’t be bothered to make a fresh burger and fries. We gave up and retreated to our room for Pringles.
Secondly, the technology was a letdown – the wifi was very “up and down” which was blamed on the weather but come on guys…and furthermore despite half a dozen complaints and at least three visits to the room the television failed to work consistently during our stay. Every 5-10 minutes the screen would go blank and you would have to reset the channel. This has been going on for a couple of years as you can see from other reviews.
Thirdly, despite staying 4 days at the hotel we were unable to get an appointment at the spa at all at any time. Since the spa has a good reputation and is one of the main reasons to stay at the hotel we were quite surprised not only to be unable to get an appointment but also not to have been warned that this would be an issue.
In conclusion this is NOT necessary. There are some very good resorts in the Seychelles. This is just not one of them.
The fact that we complained so much and to so many and yet were never visited or even called by the GM speaks volumes. Maybe this place will improve. However having looked back at some of the other reviews it is clear that this has all been going on for some time so don’t get your hopes up.
Finally - if I’d known when I’d booked what I know now, I would have booked the Four Seasons for half the time and got more than double the value. AVOID!
Nice and clean property with friendly folks. A minor issue happened upon check out where the reception lady tried my first card and the transaction got canceled on POS; so I had to pay with another card but when I returned to US and checked my statements, I noticed that the charges are also posted on the first card. Service and food quality could be better for breakfast.
I’m writing this review while I’m still at the resort. The resort is not bad, not super luxurious though, we stayed at the pool villa for 3 nights, it was private.
We booked the garden villa for the last night as we were leaving early in the morning. Basically first the told us we need to leave the pool villa at 11 cause there are guests coming and then when we called at 11 they said the garden villa is still not ready and we can stay in the pool villa until 5 since there is no one coming and then we get a phone call at 2:30 saying we have to leave now cause there are guests coming so we packed quickly and it’s not 4 and still no one came to take our stuff and take us to the garden villa, they basically wasted our whole day and the weather is beautiful so we’re missing out on the swimming and we also have a child so it’s not easy, moral of the story the service is not great, nada the receptionist is amazing otherwise everything else is average.
Had a four night stay here, very beautiful hotel, located right on the beach away from the main capital "town", so a great relaxing place, ideal for couples with so many little hideaways and beachside dining and the property joins the beach, so perfect for watching the sun set.
The rooms are wonderful, very well appointed, opening into the garden or balcony. Bed was comfy, bathroom beautiful, all in all, one of the nicer rooms I have had I n a long time. They also have villas with their own private pool, if you are feeling flashy, but for me, the communal pool is very nice, with beds, cabanas and a bar at the side. The whole thing was well maintained and not over crowded.
Breakfast is served in a beautiful dining area, open air, with a fantastic range of items, really exceptional. Also, we tried the Trader Vics which is on site, not much to say, it is Trader Vics, you all know the brand, it is well delivered, service good and location is fantastic.
All in all, if you want relaxation, beaches, spa, great food and a nice base to travel the island from, this is it. We rented a car, so we could have flexibility, with lots of free parking by the front door, it was a great place to stay.
Every fine detail had been considered. Perfect.
I can’t really say more than that, but as there’s a minimum word count I’ll elaborate. The stylish H Resort delivers great hospitality and food from excellent staff.
